    Coca y wachuma:sus prácticas y significados en la cultura andina y en Lima

    La primera parte de la tesis no implica trabajo de campo, sino que toma como base fuentes antropológicas, documentos coloniales y evidencias arqueológicas de uso de estas plantas en el pasado prehispánico. A partir de esta documentación, se realiza un análisis comparativo de la coca y el wachuma, considerando 4 aspectos principales: (1) caracterización de ambas plantas maestras (botánica, especies y variedades, contenido en alcaloides y nutrientes, efectos sicotrópicos); (2) la historia “arqueológica” (origen y domesticación, historia prehispánica); (3) las fuentes escritas de los siglos XVI y XVII; (4) el uso tradicional (áreas y contextos de uso, los especialistas). El capítulo 2 está referido a la coca y el capítulo 3 al wachuma, en cada caso se considera los cuatro aspectos arriba especificados. En el capítulo 4 se presenta un estudio comparativo del hallpay -rito de coca- y de la mesada -rito de wachuma-, donde se cotejan las formas y los contenidos de ambos ritos. En el capítulo 5 se resumen las analogías y diferencias en las prácticas y significados de la coca y del wachuma en la cultura andina. El aporte primordial de esta tesis se refiere a los nuevos usos y significados que tienen la coca y el wachuma durante los recientes años, en la ciudad de Lima. No hay ningún estudio antropológico sistemático sobre este tema. Por ello, para obtener las respuestas buscadas, ha sido necesaria la indagación etnográfica a través del trabajo de campo.Tesi

    Prognostic significance of TRAIL-R3 and CCR-2 expression in tumor epithelial cells of patients with early breast cancer

    Tumor epithelial cells (TEpCs) and spindle-shaped stromal cells, not associated with the vasculature, of patients with early breast cancer express osteoprotegerin (OPG), tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand, stromal cell derived factor-1, interleukin-6, macrophage colony stimulating factor, chemokine (C-C motif) ligand-2 (CCL-2) and their receptors at significantly higher levels compared with non-neoplastic breast tissues. We evaluated the clinicopathological significance of these ligands and receptors in TEpC and spindle-shaped stromal cells, not associated with the vasculature, to determine their impact on prognosis of patients with early-stage breast cancer.Fil: Labovsky, Vivian.     Fluticasone furoate/vilanterol (100/25; 200/25 μg) improves lung function in COPD: a randomised trial.

    SummaryBackgroundOnce-daily combination treatment is an attractive maintenance therapy for COPD. However, the dose of inhaled corticosteroid to use in a once-daily combination is unknown. We compared two strengths of fluticasone furoate (FF) plus vilanterol (VI), the same strengths of the individual components, and placebo.MethodsMulticentre, randomised, 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study in stable, moderate-to-severe COPD subjects (N = 1224). Subjects were randomised to FF/VI (200/25 μg; 100/25 μg), FF (200 μg; 100 μg), VI 25 μg, or placebo, once daily in the morning. Co-primary efficacy endpoints; 0–4 h weighted mean (wm) FEV1 on day 168, and change from baseline in trough (23–24 h post-dose) FEV1 on day 169. The primary safety objective was adverse events (AEs).ResultsThere was a statistically significant (p < 0.001) increase in wm FEV1 (209 ml) and trough FEV1 (131 ml) for FF/VI 200/25 μg vs. placebo; similar changes were seen for FF/VI 100/25 μg vs. placebo. Whereas the difference between FF/VI 200/25 μg and VI 25 μg in change from baseline trough FEV1 (32 ml) was not statistically significant (p = 0.224), the difference between FF/VI 200/25 μg and FF 200 μg for wm FEV1 (168 ml) was significantly different (p < 0.001). VI 25 μg significantly improved wm and trough FEV1 vs. placebo (209 ml and 131 ml, respectively). No increase was seen in on-treatment AEs or serious AEs (SAEs), with active therapy vs. placebo.ConclusionsFF/VI provides rapid and significant sustained improvement in FEV1 in subjects with moderate-to-severe COPD, which was not influenced by the dose of FF.     Relaxation processes in harmonic glasses?

    A relaxation process, with the associated phenomenology of sound attenuation and sound velocity dispersion, is found in a simulated harmonic Lennard-Jones glass. We propose to identify this process with the so called microscopic (or instantaneous) relaxation process observed in real glasses and supercooled liquids. A model based on the memory function approach accounts for the observation, and allows to relate to each others: 1) the characteristic time and strength of this process, 2) the low frequency limit of the dynamic structure factor of the glass, and 3) the high frequency sound attenuation coefficient, with its observed quadratic dependence on the momentum transfer.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Spontaneous Osteoclastogenesis, a risk factor for bone metastasis in advanced luminal A-type breast cancer patients

    Introduction: Osteolytic bone metastasis in advanced breast cancer stages are a major complication for patient ' s quality life and a sign of low survival prognosis. Permissive microenvironments which allow cancer cell secondary homing and later proliferation are fundamental for metastatic processes. The causes and mechanisms behind bone metastasis in breast cancer patients are still an unsolved puzzle. Therefore, in this work we contribute to describe bone marrow pre-metastatic niche in advanced breast cancer patients. Results: We show an increase in osteoclasts precursors with a concomitant imbalance towards spontaneous osteoclastogenesis which can be evidenced at bone marrow and peripheral levels. Pro-osteoclastogenic factors RANKL and CCL-2 may contribute to bone resorption signature observed in bone marrow. Meanwhile, expression levels of specific microRNAs in primary breast tumors may already indicate a pro-osteoclastogenic scenario prior to bone metastasis. Discussion: The discovery of prognostic biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets linked to bone metastasis initiation and development are a promising perspective for preventive treatments and metastasis management in advanced breast cancer patients

    Elastic constant dishomogeneity and Q2Q^2 dependence of the broadening of the dynamical structure factor in disordered systems

    We propose an explanation for the quadratic dependence on the momentum QQ, of the broadening of the acoustic excitation peak recently found in the study of the dynamic structure factor of many real and simulated glasses. We ascribe the observed Q2Q^2 law to the spatial fluctuations of the local wavelength of the collective vibrational modes, in turn produced by the dishomegeneity of the inter-particle elastic constants. This explanation is analitically shown to hold for 1-dimensional disordered chains and satisfatorily numerically tested in both 1 and 3 dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 5 postscript figure

    PlantCV v2: Image analysis software for high-throughput plant phenotyping

    Systems for collecting image data in conjunction with computer vision techniques are a powerful tool for increasing the temporal resolution at which plant phenotypes can be measured non-destructively. Computational tools that are flexible and extendable are needed to address the diversity of plant phenotyping problems. We previously described the Plant Computer Vision (PlantCV) software package, which is an image processing toolkit for plant phenotyping analysis. The goal of the PlantCV project is to develop a set of modular, reusable, and repurposable tools for plant image analysis that are open-source and community-developed. Here we present the details and rationale for major developments in the second major release of PlantCV. In addition to overall improvements in the organization of the PlantCV project, new functionality includes a set of new image processing and normalization tools, support for analyzing images that include multiple plants, leaf segmentation, landmark identification tools for morphometrics, and modules for machine learning
