    Review of Recent Searches for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of Charmed Mesons

    I briefly review the results of recent searches for flavor-changing neutral current and lepton-flavor and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0 mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. The primary focus is the results from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791. E791 examined 24 pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and l+l- decay modes of D0.     Free college programs have proliferated at the state and local levels over the past decade, focused primarily on the nation’s community colleges. President Biden’s $1.8 trillion American Families Plan includes funding to make community college tuition free for participating states, and the idea of federally supported tuition-free four-year public college education is also back in the spotlight. It is easy to see why: “free college” fits on a bumper sticker, and it offers a simple message that signals to low-income families and first-generation students that achieving a valuable postsecondary credential is possible for them. This can lead families to prioritize education earlier, in the middle school years, when young people are developing the skills needed to succeed in high school and college. It can also support the growing number of adult learners by reducing one big uncertainty about the cost of returning to pursue a college degree. Making a public college education tuition-free can indeed enhance access and covering non-tuition costs of college can also aid in completion..

    Interplay between structure and magnetism in Mo12S9I9Mo_{12} S_9 I_9 nanowires

    We investigate the equilibrium geometry and electronic structure of Mo12_{12}S9_{9}I9_{9} nanowires using ab initio Density Functional calculations. The skeleton of these unusually stable nanowires consists of rigid, functionalized Mo octahedra, connected by flexible, bi-stable sulphur bridges. This structural flexibility translates into a capability to stretch up to approximate 20% at almost no energy cost. The nanowires change from conductors to narrow-gap magnetic semiconductors in one of their structural isomers.Comment: 4 pages with PRL standards and 3 figure

    HVDC transmission systems are becoming increasingly popular when compared to conventional AC transmission methods. HVDC voltage source converters (VSC) can offer advantages over traditional HVDC current source converter topologies; as such, it is expected that HVDC-VSCs will be further exploited with the growth of HVDC transmission. This paper presents the DC fault ride through capability and new STATCOM modes of operation for the recently published Alternate Arm Converter (AAC), intended for the HVDC market. Operation and fault ride through of the converter during a local terminal to terminal short circuit of the DC-Link is demonstrated; during the fault STATCOM operation is also demonstrated

    Testing the Unitarity of the CKM Matrix with a Space-Based Neutron Decay Experiment

    If the Standard Model is correct, and fundamental fermions exist only in the three generations, then the CKM matrix should be unitary. However, there remains a question over a deviation from unitarity from the value of the neutron lifetime. We discuss a simple space-based experiment that, at an orbit height of 500 km above Earth, would measure the kinetic-energy, solid-angle, flux spectrum of gravitationally bound neutrons (kinetic energy K<0.606 eV at this altitude). The difference between the energy spectrum of neutrons that come up from the Earth's atmosphere and that of the undecayed neutrons that return back down to the Earth would yield a measurement of the neutron lifetime. This measurement would be free of the systematics of laboratory experiments. A package of mass <25<25 kg could provide a 10^{-3} precision in two years.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.     Rhythmogenic neuronal networks, pacemakers, and k-cores

    Neuronal networks are controlled by a combination of the dynamics of individual neurons and the connectivity of the network that links them together. We study a minimal model of the preBotzinger complex, a small neuronal network that controls the breathing rhythm of mammals through periodic firing bursts. We show that the properties of a such a randomly connected network of identical excitatory neurons are fundamentally different from those of uniformly connected neuronal networks as described by mean-field theory. We show that (i) the connectivity properties of the networks determines the location of emergent pacemakers that trigger the firing bursts and (ii) that the collective desensitization that terminates the firing bursts is determined again by the network connectivity, through k-core clusters of neurons.Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
