Long-Term Observation of the Adirondack Ecosystem - Data from the SUNY ESF Newcomb Campus
The Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) at ESF’s Newcomb Campus has one of the oldest and broadest records of scientific field research in North America. Located on the Anna and Archer Huntington Wildlife Forest, AEC is a biological field station and multi-disciplinary platform for research, education and outreach where the most pressing environmental challenges facing our society can be directly examined and understood. The Newcomb Campus (www.esf.edu/newcomb) includes the AEC, Northern Forest Institute, public Adirondack Interpretive Center and Forest Operations Adirondack Properties unit. The campus’ professional staff and scientists collectively maintain extensive data archives from a century of observation. This paper provides a “road map” for researchers, students, historians and others on what resources exist and how to access them
ILC Beam Energy Measurement by means of Laser Compton Backscattering
A novel, non-invasive method of measuring the beam energy at the
International Linear Collider is proposed. Laser light collides head-on with
beam particles and either the energy of the Compton scattered electrons near
the kinematic end-point is measured or the positions of the Compton
backscattered -rays, the edge electrons and the unscattered beam
particles are recorded. A compact layout for the Compton spectrometer is
suggested. It consists of a bending magnet and position sensitive detectors
operating in a large radiation environment. Several options for high spatial
resolution detectors are discussed. Simulation studies support the use of an
infrared or green laser and quartz fiber detectors to monitor the backscattered
photons and edge electrons. Employing a cavity monitor, the beam particle
position downstream of the magnet can be recorded with submicrometer precision.
Such a scheme provides a feasible and promising method to access the incident
beam energy with precisions of or better on a bunch-to-bunch basis
while the electron and positron beams are in collision.Comment: 47 pages, 26 figures, version as accepted by Nucl. Instr. Meth. A

Efeito do alumínio no conteúdo de poliaminas livres e atividade da fosfatase ácida durante o crescimento de brotações de Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla cultivadas in vitro
This paper is aiming to evaluate the effects of different levels of the aluminum on the growth of the Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla shoots cultivated in vitro. Evaluations were carried out on pH and chemicals modifications of the culture medium by Geochem program, polyamines contents (putrescine, espermidine e espermine) and acid phosphatase ativity on the shoots. The trial had a totally randomized design with four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were: 0.0, 6.75,13.50 and 27 mg.L -1 of AlCl 3.6H 2. Evaluations were carried out on the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th and 28th day of culture. The addition of the aluminium, in all concentrations, affected the culture medium ionic equilibrium, the morphology of the shoots, reduced the pH on the medium, induced an increase in polyamines content and higher acid phosphatase activity
