    Get PDF
    Background:: This study examined the feasibility, safety and efficacy of an 8-week Relaxation Response (RR)-based group. Methods:: Twenty-two depressed Chinese American immigrants were recruited. Outcomes measures were response and remission rates, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, Clinical Global Impressions Scale, Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Scale. Results: Participants (N = 22) were 82% female, mean age was 53 (±12). After intervention, completers (N = 15) showed a 40% response rate and a 27% remission rate, and statistically significant improvement in most outcome measures. Discussion: The RR-based group is feasible and safe in treating Chinese American immigrants with depression

    Molecular dynamics study of the fragmentation of silicon doped fullerenes

    Full text link
    Tight binding molecular dynamics simulations, with a non orthogonal basis set, are performed to study the fragmentation of carbon fullerenes doped with up to six silicon atoms. Both substitutional and adsorbed cases are considered. The fragmentation process is simulated starting from the equilibrium configuration in each case and imposing a high initial temperature to the atoms. Kinetic energy quickly converts into potential energy, so that the system oscillates for some picoseconds and eventually breaks up. The most probable first event for substituted fullerenes is the ejection of a C2 molecule, another very frequent event being that one Si atom goes to an adsorbed position. Adsorbed Si clusters tend to desorb as a whole when they have four or more atoms, while the smaller ones tend to dissociate and sometimes interchange positions with the C atoms. These results are compared with experimental information from mass abundance spectroscopy and the products of photofragmentation.Comment: Seven two-column pages, six postscript figures.

    K^- Meson Production in the Proton-Proton Reaction at 3.67 GeV/c

    Full text link
    The total cross section of the reaction ppppK+Kpp\to ppK^+K^- has been determined for proton--proton reactions with pbeam=3.67GeV/cp_{beam}=3.67 GeV/c. This represents the first cross section measurement of the ppppKK+pp \to ppK^-K^+ channel near threshold, and is equivalent to the inclusive ppppKXpp\to ppK^-X cross section at this beam momentum. The cross section determined at this beam momentum is about a factor 20 lower than that for inclusive ppppK+Xpp\to ppK^+X meson production at the same CM energy above the corresponding threshold. This large difference in the K+K^+ and KK^- meson inclusive production cross sections in proton-proton reactions is in strong contrast to cross sections measured in sub-threshold heavy ion collisions, which are similar in magnitude at the same energy per nucleon below the respective thresholds.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures Phys. Production of η\eta\prime Mesons in the ppppηpp \to pp\eta\prime Reaction at 3.67 GeV/c

    Full text link
    The ratio of the total exclusive production cross sections for η\eta\prime and η\eta mesons has been measured in the pppp reaction at pbeam=3.67p_{beam}=3.67 GeV/c. The observed η/η\eta\prime/\eta ratio is (0.83±0.110.18+0.23)×102(0.83\pm{0.11}^{+0.23}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-2} from which the exclusive η\eta\prime meson production cross section is determined to be (1.12±0.150.31+0.42)μb(1.12\pm{0.15}^{+0.42}_{-0.31})\mu b. Differential cross section distributions have been measured. Their shape is consistent with isotropic η\eta\prime meson production.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Phys.Lett.

    Using a sample of (1310.6±7.0)×106(1310.6\pm7.0)\times10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events recorded with the BESIII detector at the symmetric electron positron collider BEPCII, we report the observation of the decay of the (11S0)(1^1 S_0) charmonium state ηc\eta_c into a pair of ω\omega mesons in the process J/ψγωωJ/\psi\to\gamma\omega\omega. The branching fraction is measured for the first time to be B(ηcωω)=(2.88±0.10±0.46±0.68)×103\mathcal{B}(\eta_c\to\omega\omega)= (2.88\pm0.10\pm0.46\pm0.68)\times10^{-3}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty of B(J/ψγηc)\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c). The mass and width of the ηc\eta_c are determined as M=(2985.9±0.7±2.1)M=(2985.9\pm0.7\pm2.1)\,MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=(33.8±1.6±4.1)\Gamma=(33.8\pm1.6\pm4.1)\,MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+eppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

    Full text link
    The process of e+eppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉ\sigma_{p\bar{p}}) of e+eppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (GE/GM|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (Geff|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (GE|G_E|) and magnetic (GM|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. GE/GM|G_{E}/G_{M}| and GM|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and GE|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics

    Study of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(3686)Σ(1385)0Σˉ(1385)0\psi(3686)\rightarrow\Sigma(1385)^{0}\bar\Sigma(1385)^{0} and Ξ0Ξˉ0\Xi^0\bar\Xi^{0}

    We study the decays of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(3686)\psi(3686) to the final states Σ(1385)0Σˉ(1385)0\Sigma(1385)^{0}\bar\Sigma(1385)^{0} and Ξ0Ξˉ0\Xi^0\bar\Xi^{0} based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of (1310.6±7.0)×106(1310.6 \pm 7.0) \times 10^{6} J/ψJ/\psi and (447.9±2.9)×106(447.9 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{6} ψ(3686)\psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to Σ(1385)0Σˉ(1385)0\Sigma(1385)^{0}\bar\Sigma(1385)^{0} are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(3686)Ξ0Ξˉ0\psi(3686)\rightarrow\Xi^0\bar\Xi^{0} are in good agreement with, and much more precise, than the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for J/ψΣ(1385)0Σˉ(1385)0J/\psi\rightarrow\Sigma(1385)^{0}\bar\Sigma(1385)^{0}, α=0.64±0.03±0.10\alpha =-0.64 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.10, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the "12\% rule" and isospin symmetry in the J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(3686)ΞΞˉ\psi(3686)\rightarrow\Xi\bar\Xi and Σ(1385)Σˉ(1385)\Sigma(1385)\bar{\Sigma}(1385) systems are tested.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures.
