Vortex dynamics resulting from the interaction between two NACA 23 012 airfoils
International audienceAn experimental study of the interaction between two airfoils, corresponding to a T-tail aircraft configuration, is implemented in a wind tunnel for a range of medium Reynolds numbers. Measurement of aerodynamic forces is carried out by strain gauges and the velocity field is obtained by particle image velocimetry. The study focuses on large angles-of-attack configurations, corresponding to detached flows on the airfoils and the presence of a downstream vortex shedding. Phase averages of the velocity fields are made building the flow time development. A lift modulation depending on geometric parameters and resulting from different pathlines of the shedding vortices, is discussed
Simulation of the aeroelastic behavior of a possibly detached flow airfoil by a discrete vortex method
International audienceThe aeroelastic behavior of an airfoil results in a complex coupling between the elastic response of the structure and the dynamics of the flow. It can lead to the failure of a lifting surface which consequences could be catastrophic. Experiments and high-order computations contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon, but fast low-order methods are needed for engineering tasks. In the present work, we implement a loose fluid-structure coupling between a discrete-time vortex method, using a leading edge shedding criterion, and the structure motion equations. For each time step, the aerodynamic coefficients are first calculated before the computation of the motion of the structure. Flutter velocity is obtained with the same precision as unsteady standard method. The advantage of the method proposed is the ability to catch the limit cycle for velocities larger than flutter speed due to dynamic stall of the airfoil
Bending relaxation of HO by collision with para- and ortho-H
We extend our recent theoretical work on the bending relaxation of HO in
collisions with H by including the three water modes of vibration coupled
with rotation, as well as the rotation of H. Our full quantum
close-coupling method (excluding the H vibration) is combined with a
high-accuracy nine-dimensional potential energy surface. The collisions of
para-HO and ortho-HO with the two spin modifications of H are
considered and compared for several initial states of HO. The convergence
of the results as a function of the size of the rotational basis set of the two
colliders is discussed. In particular, near-resonant energy transfer between
HO and H is found to control the vibrational relaxation process, with a
dominant contribution of transitions with delta j2 = +2, +4. Finally, the
calculated value of the HO bending relaxation rate coefficient at 295 K is
found to be in excellent agreement with its experimental estimate
Strategies to facilitate the development of uncloned or cloned infectious full-length viral cDNAs: Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus as a case study
Background Approaches to simplify and streamline the construction of full-length infectious cDNA clones (FL-cDNAs) are needed. Among desirable improvements are the ability to use total nucleic acids (TNA) extracts from infected hosts (to bypass viral purification limitations) for the direct one-step amplification of large FL-cDNAs, the possibility to inoculate plants with uncloned FL-cDNAs and the simplified cloning of these large molecules. Results Using the 7.55 kb genome of Apple chlorotic leaf spot trichovirus (ACLSV) approaches allowing the rapid generation from TNA extracts of FL-cDNAs under the control of the T7 promoter and the successful inoculation of plants using in vitro transcripts obtained from these uncloned amplification products have been developed. We also show that the yeast homologous recombination system permits efficient cloning of FL-cDNAs and the simultaneous one-step tailoring of a ternary Yeast-Escherichia coli-Agrobacterium tumefaciens shuttle vector allowing efficient inoculation of both herbaceous and woody host plants by agroinfiltration. Conclusions The fast and efficient strategies described here should have broad applications, in particular for the study "difficult" plant viruses, such as those infecting woody hosts, and potentially for other, non plant-infecting viral agents
