    Effect of School Climate, Students \u27Self-Handicapping Behaviors and Demographic Characteristics on Students\u27 Achievement

    This study aimed to examine the relationship between high school students\u27 academic achievements, school climate, student\u27s self-inhibiting behavior and some demographic variables. The research is a correlational study. The sample of the study consists of 981 students studying in three different types of schools in the city center of Karaman in the 2019-2020 academic year. The researcher (s) used structural equation modeling in the research. According to the results of the research, in a school climate (positive climate) that has a success-oriented, supportive teacher behavior and a safe learning environment, students are less likely to have self-handicapping behavior, and students with less self-handicapping behavior are more likely to have a highergrade point average (GPA). The study found that school climate also affects grade point average through self-handicapping. The study found that age, school type, gender and socioeconomic status variables also affected the student\u27s grade point average. In the context of examining student achievement by taking into account structural, social, psychological, and environmental factors of the school, the researcher (s) thought that this research would make an essential contribution to the literature

    Malaria Epidemiology in Mersin Province, Turkey from 2002 to 2011

    Background: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium spp. with high morbidity and mortality in human in tropical and subtropical regions. In recent years, number of malaria cases has been significantly reduced because of fight with the disease in Turkey. This study intended to investigate the malaria epidemiology in Mersin Province from 2002 to 2011 using data from the provincial Public Health Directorate. Methods: Over ten years, 303573 blood samples were taken from the people by active and passive surveillance methods and blood smears were prepared. Smears were stained with Giemsa and examined under the microscope. Results: Totally, 73 people including 44 male and 29 female were positive in terms of Plasmodium spp. It was determined that P. vivax observed in 67 cases while P. falciparum in 6 cases. Cases were mainly observed in 15 to 44 years old range, showed an increase between June-September periods and a significant decrease after 2006. Out of the 73 malaria cases, 54 cases were from Mersin Province and 13 cases were imported from another province of Turkey. Six cases were transmitted from abroad. Conclusion: These results provide information about malaria epidemiology in an endemic area in Turkey and contribute its prevention in Mersin Province

    Heavy metal contamination of Pleuronectiformes species from Sinop coasts of the Black Sea

    In the Turkish Black Sea coasts fish is particularly consumed because of high protein supplies, essential amino acids, vitamin, and mineral content. Fish are exposed to contaminants such as heavy metals in polluted waters. The aims of the study are to determine heavy metals in Pleuronectiformes species from Sinop coasts of the Black Sea and determine the health risks due to the consumption of contaminated fish. Pleuronectiformes species Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) belonging to Scophthalmidae family, Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) belonging to Bothidae family and Pegusa lascaris (Risso, 1810) belonging to Soleidae family were collected from Sinop coasts of the Black Sea in fishing season of 2016. Heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) in edible tissues were determined by ICP-MS (Agilent 7700x). The limit values given by the international and national organizations did not exceed in the muscle tissues of turbot, Mediterranean scald fish and sand sole. Overall Zn was detected in higher concentrations in all species followed by Cu, Pb, Hg and Cd. The results obtained from the analyses of the maximum levels of the metals except Hg were found in turbot. The highest Hg (0.021±0.007 µg g-1 wet wt.) was found in sand sole. However, the high amounts of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in turbot were 0.011±0.004, 0.07±0.005,1.32±0.28 and 14±3 µg g-1 wet wt., respectively. The EDIs and EWIs of the metals were estimated taking into account the mean of metal in all fish samples and the mean consumption of fish per day/week for adults. These results are normally significantly lower than the recommended values of FAO/WHO. Estimated HIs of all the considered metals were below the value of 1, therefore the metals in fish samples do not toxic any apparent threat to the population and these fishes are healthy for consumption.Keywords: Scophthalmus maximus, Arnoglossus laterna, Pegusa lascaris, heavy metals, Black Se

    Sosyal medya uygulamalarını kullanmaya yönelik niyetin belirleyicileri

    This study examines to understand the smartphone users' attitudes and intention towards social media apps with the perspective of three widely used models; uses and gratification (U&G) theory's psychological motivations factors (entertainment, sociality, and information), innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Thus, in the framework of this research, the proposed research model consists of three respective models. The random sampling technique used to collect research samples from Usak province in Turkey. The data used in testing the research model collected by the questionnaires. The numbers of the valid survey collected were 527. The structural equation modeling conducted to analyze the research assumptions and model. The outcomes indicate that the users' perceived ease of use (PEOU) influenced by complexity, relative advantage, observability, trialability. Perceived usefulness (PU) affected by compatibility, relative advantage, observability, trialability, and PEOU, while with attitude together influencing intention to use social media app. Another outcome showed that attitude determined by sociality, entertainment, PEOU, and PU. Empirical results also provided support for the integrative approach. The results show that TAM in the extension of an innovation diffusion theory and psychological motivations can help decision-makers in the social media app.Bu çalışmanın amacı, akıllı telefon kullanıcılarının sosyal medya uygulamalarına yönelik tutumlarını ve niyetlerini, yaygın olarak kullanılan üç model; kullanımlar ve doyumlar teorisinin psikolojik faktörleri (eğlence, sosyalleşme ve bilgi), yeniliğin yayılımı kuramı ve teknoloji kabul modeli bakış açısıyla incelemektir. Bu araştırma hedefi çerçevesinde, bu üç model bir araştırma modeli altında birleştirilmiştir. Araştırma örnekleri Uşak İl’inden rasgele örneklem tekniği ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırma modelinin test edilmesinde kullanılan veriler anket yolu ile toplanmıştır. Toplanan geçerli anket sayısı 527 dir. Araştırma modeli ile araştırma hipotezleri yapısal eşitlik modellemesi ile test edilmiştir. Sonuçlar göstermektedir ki, kullanıcıların algılanan kullanım kolaylığı; karmaşıklık, bağıl avantaj, gözlemlenebilirlik ve denenebilirlik tarafından etkilenmektedir. Algılanan fayda ise; uygunluk, bağıl avantaj, gözlemlenebilirlik, denenebilirlik ve algılanan kullanım kolaylığı tarafından etkilenirken, algılanan fayda ile tutum sosyal medya uygulaması kullanım niyeti üzerinde etkilidir. Diğer taraftan sosyalleşme, eğlence, algılanan kullanım kolaylığı ve algılanan fayda tutumun belirleyicisidir. Nicel sonuçlar bütünleşik yaklaşımın desteklendiğini göstermiştir. Yeniliğin yayılımı kuramı ve psikolojik motivasyonlar bağlamında teknoloji kabul modelinin sosyal medya uygulamaları karar vericilerine yardımcı olabileceğini göstermektedir

    Meaning and Uniqueness of Ethics and Ethical Teacher Behaviors in the Teaching Profession

    This research aimed to determine ethical teacher behaviors according to the opinions of prospective teachers and teachers. In this qualitatively designed study, the phenomenology design was used, and 30 participants were interviewed. Research results showed that the participants understood the responsibilities of teachers, the respect and importance of the teaching profession, effective teaching, developing healthy relationships with school members, and benefiting students and society from teacher\u27s professional ethics. Almost all of the participants stated that the teaching profession should have unique ethical codes for different reasons. Ethical teacher behavior has emerged within the scope of rights and justice, interest and importance to people and the profession, not to harm or benefit, and the boundary of public and private space. Finally, suggestions for improving professional teaching ethics, which can be evaluated in professional, individual, social, organizational, and political contexts, were put forward in the research. It is believed that the research will make a significant contribution to the literature, as it addresses the issue of ethics by taking the views of teachers both prepared for the profession and within the profession, reveals the specific context in Turkey, and reflects descriptions of real-life experiences

    Okul Müdürlerinin Kullandıkları Güç Tipleri ile Öğretmenlerin Örgütsel Vatandaşlık Davranışları Arasındaki İlişkide Okula Güvenin Aracı Rolü

    This study tests the mediating effect of teachers’ trust in their schools on the effect of power types used by school principals on teachers’ organizational citizenship behaviors. The study was designed as a cross-sectional survey model. Since exploring mediating role of organizational trust was our focus, the mediation model was also tested. The sample of the study consisted of 439 teachers who responded to the online scales and were evaluated from 19.758 teachers working in public schools in Van in 2020-2021. In addition to personal information, Power Type Scale, Organizational Trust Scale in Schools, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale were used to gather data. In the study, mean and standard deviation values were calculated. To determine the relationship between variables, correlational analysis was performed. Path analysis was also used to test the structural equation model. Results revealed that teachers who work with school principals using personal or reward power have high trust in their schools, whereas legitimate power is not a significant predictor of school trust and coercive power is a low predictor of school trust. Results also mirror that teachers who have a high sense of trust in their schools report more organizational citizenship behaviors. The direct relationship between the use of power and organizational citizenship behavior was not found significant. As a result of the indirect effect of teachers’ trust in their schools in case of school principals’ use of personal, reward, legitimate or coercive power, the total effect size between these two variables was found to be significant. This study adds nuance to the literature by suggesting that the behaviors of school principals influence the perception of trust in school and that this perception is reflected in teachers’ behaviors.Bu araştırma, okul müdürlerinin kullandıkları güç tiplerinin öğretmenlerin örgütsel vatandaşlık davranışı üzerindeki etkisinde öğretmenlerin okullarına karşı duyduğu güvenin aracılık etkisini test etmektedir. Araştırma tarama deseninde olup ilişkisel ve kesitsel modelde tasarlanmıştır. Araştırmada örgütsel güvenin aracılık rolü de incelendiği için aracılık modeline de başvurulmuştur. Araştırmanın örneklemini, 2020-2021 yılında, Van ilindeki resmi okullarda görev yapan 19.758 öğretmenden çevrimiçi olarak uygulanan ölçeklere yanıt veren ve değerlendirmeye alınan 439 öğretmen oluşturmuştur. Veri toplama araçlarında kişisel bilgilerin yanı sıra Güç Tipi Ölçeği, Okullarda Örgütsel Güven Ölçeği ve Örgütsel Vatandaşlık Davranışı Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada ortalama ve standart sapma değerleri hesaplanmış, değişkenler arası ilişkiyi saptamak için korelasyon analizi ve yapısal eşitlik modelini test etmek için yol analizi yapılmıştır. Araştırmada, kişisel veya ödül gücü kullanan okul müdürleriyle çalışan öğretmenlerin okullarına karşı yüksek güven duydukları, buna karşın yasal gücün okula güvenin anlamlı bir yordayıcısı olmadığı ve zorlayıcı gücün de okula güveni düşük düzeyde yordadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen bir diğer sonuç okullarına karşı güven duygusu yüksek olan öğretmenlerin örgütsel vatandaşlık davranışlarının da yüksek olduğu yönündedir. Araştırmada güç kullanımı ile örgütsel vatandaşlık davranışı arasındaki doğrudan ilişki anlamlı bulunmamıştır, ancak gerek kişisel veya ödül gücü, gerek yasal veya zorlayıcı güç kullanımı durumunda öğretmenlerin okullarına karşı duydukları güvenin meydana getirdiği dolaylı etki sonucunda bu iki değişken arasındaki toplam etki büyüklüğü anlamlı bulunmuştur. Bu araştırma, okul müdürlerinin davranışlarının okula ilişkin güven algısını nasıl etkilediğini ve oluşan bu algının öğretmen davranışlarına nasıl yansıdığını göstermesi bağlamında eğitim yönetimi alanyazınına katkı sunmaktadır

    Concept of Happiness in Schizophrenia

    Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects a person's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Although the symptoms of schizophrenia vary from person to person, the course of the disorder is generally not mild. In addition to these effects of the disease, patients have to struggle with both social and family problems. Having positive feelings such as hope and happiness for patients during this hard period can be a source of motivation in coping with the disease. Indeed, happiness is a basic dimension of a person's life, related to both functionality and achievement. Happiness is a power that supports mental and psychological well-being in many fields, from healthy living to social interaction in individuals. Happiness in schizophrenia points out less depressive mood, less social isolation, and a more hopeful process for the future and treatment process during the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of schizophrenia. However, limited data are available on happiness in schizophrenia due to the long-standing belief that anhedonia is an inherent feature in schizophrenia. In this context, this study aims to create awareness about the ignored concept of happiness in patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate happiness in schizophrenia with its clinical and functional results

    "Herkes İçin Eğitim" Anlayışıyla Hastanede Eğitim: Bir Durum Çalışması

    This study aims to examine the education at hospital which is an implementation supporting the approach Education for All, to determine the situation related to the quality of education and to reveal the problems experienced in hospital classes. This research is designed as a case study and a hospital class is examined in depth. Interview and observation techniques were used as a data source. The participants of research are two teachers, two medical staff, two students and a parent. As a result of the research, six themes related to the current situation of education processes in the hospital classroom were obtained: access to education for children at hospital, quality of education, financial support, social and psychological status, impact on the child’s academic development and communication. In addition, the problems experienced during the educational practices and the suggestions for improving the quality of educational practices in hospital classrooms have been stated by the participants. For students who need education at hospital, it is important to create awareness in the society about hospital schools or classes. In the research, it is suggested that teachers should be trained about education at hospital, students who are discharged from the hospital should be empowered psychologically and socially, and researchers should focus more on this issue.Bu çalışma, Herkes için Eğitim anlayışını destekleyen bir uygulama olarak hastanede eğitimi incelemeyi, hastanede eğitimin niteliği ile ilgili durumu tespit etmeyi ve hastane sınıfında yaşanan sorunları ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırma bir durum çalışması olarak tasarlanmış ve bir hastane sınıfı derinlemesine incelenmiştir. Veri kaynağı olarak görüşme ve gözlem teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları iki öğretmen, iki sağlık personeli, iki öğrenci ve bir ebeveyndir. Araştırma sonucunda hastane sınıfındaki eğitim süreçlerindeki mevcut duruma ilişkin altı tema elde edilmiştir: hastanedeki çocukların eğitime erişimi, eğitimin niteliği, finansal destek, sosyal ve psikolojik durum, çocuğun akademik gelişimine etkisi ve iletişim. Araştırmada ayrıca, katılımcılar tarafından eğitim uygulamaları sırasında yaşanan sorunlar ve hastane sınıflarında eğitim uygulamalarının kalitesinin artırılmasına yönelik öneriler belirtilmiştir. Hastanede eğitime ihtiyacı olan öğrenciler için, toplumda hastane okulları veya sınıfları hakkında bir farkındalık yaratmak önemlidir. Araştırma kapsamında öğretmenlerin hastanelerde eğitim konusunda eğitilmesi, hastaneden taburcu edilen öğrencilerin psikolojik ve sosyal açıdan güçlendirilmesi ve araştırmacıların bu konuya daha fazla odaklanmaları önerilmektedir
