Optimal focusing for maximal collection of entangled narrow-band photon pairs into single-mode fibers
We present a theoretical and experimental investigation of the emission
characteristics and the flux of photon pairs generated by spontaneous
parametric downconversion in quasi-phase matched bulk crystals for the use in
quantum communication sources. We show that, by careful design, one can attain
well defined modes close to the fundamental mode of optical fibers and obtain
high coupling efficiencies also for bulk crystals, these being more easily
aligned than crystal waveguides. We distinguish between singles coupling,
conditional coincidence, and pair coupling, and show how each of these
parameters can be maximized by varying the focusing of the pump mode and the
fiber-matched modes using standard optical elements. Specifically we analyze a
periodically poled KTP-crystal pumped by a 532 nm laser creating photon pairs
at 810 nm and 1550 nm. Numerical calculations lead to coupling efficiencies
above 94% at optimal focusing, which is found by the geometrical relation L/z_R
to be ~ 1 to 2 for the pump mode and ~ 2 to 3 for the fiber-modes, where L is
the crystal length and z_R is the Rayleigh-range of the mode-profile. These
results are independent on L. By showing that the single-mode bandwidth
decreases as 1/L, we can therefore design the source to produce and couple
narrow bandwidth photon pairs well into the fibers. Smaller bandwidth means
both less chromatic dispersion for long propagation distances in fibers, and
that telecom Bragg gratings can be utilized to compensate for broadened photon
packets--a vital problem for time-multiplexed qubits. Longer crystals also
yield an increase in fiber photon flux proportional to sqrt{L}, and so,
assuming correct focusing, we can only see advantages using long crystals.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, ReVTeX4, minor revisio
Deep learning model for detection of pain intensity from facial expression
Many people who are suffering from a chronic pain face pe- riods of acute pain and resulting problems during their illness and ade- quate reporting of symptoms is necessary for treatment. Some patients have difficulties in adequately alerting caregivers to their pain or describ- ing the intensity which can impact on effective treatment. Pain and its intensity can be noticeable in ones face. Movements in facial muscles can depict ones current emotional state. Machine learning algorithms can detect pain intensity from facial expressions. The algorithm can ex- tract and classify facial expression of pain among patients. In this paper, we propose a new deep learning model for detection of pain intensity from facial expressions. This automatic pain detection system may help clinicians to detect pain and its intensity in patients and by doing this healthcare organizations may have access to more complete and more regular information of patients regarding their pain
O adsorption and incipient oxidation of the Mg(0001) surface
First principles density functional calculations are used to study the early
oxidation stages of the Mg(0001) surface for oxygen coverages 1/16 <= Theta <=
3 monolayers. It is found that at very low coverages O is incorporated below
the topmost Mg layer in tetrahedral sites. At higher oxygen-load the binding in
on-surface sites is increased but at one monolayer coverage the on-surface
binding is still about 60 meV weaker than for subsurface sites. The subsurface
octahedral sites are found to be unfavorable compared to subsurface tetrahedral
sites and to on-surface sites. At higher coverages oxygen adsorbs both under
the surface and up. Our calculations predict island formation and clustering of
incorporated and adsorbed oxygen in agreement with previous calculations. The
calculated configurations are compared with the angle-scanned x-ray
photoelectron diffraction experiment to determine the geometrical structure of
the oxidized Mg(0001) surface.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
A bank of unscented Kalman filters for multimodal human perception with mobile service robots
A new generation of mobile service robots could be ready soon to operate in human environments if they can robustly estimate position and identity of surrounding people. Researchers in this field face a number of challenging problems, among which sensor uncertainties and real-time constraints.
In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient solution for simultaneous tracking and recognition of people within the observation range of a mobile robot. Multisensor techniques for legs and face detection are fused in a robust probabilistic framework to height, clothes and face recognition algorithms. The system is based on an efficient bank of Unscented Kalman Filters that keeps a multi-hypothesis estimate of the person being tracked, including the case where the latter is unknown to the robot.
Several experiments with real mobile robots are presented to validate the proposed approach. They show that our solutions can improve the robot's perception and recognition of humans, providing a useful contribution for the future application of service robotics
Long-distance entanglement-based quantum key distribution over optical fiber
We report the first entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) experiment over a 100-km optical fiber. We used superconducting single photon detectors based on NbN nanowires that provide high-speed single photon detection for the 1.5-µm telecom band, an efficient entangled photon pair source that consists of a fiber coupled periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide and ultra low loss filters, and planar lightwave circuit Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) with ultra stable operation. These characteristics enabled us to perform an entanglement-based QKD experiment over a 100-km optical fiber. In the experiment, which lasted approximately 8 hours, we successfully generated a 16 kbit sifted key with a quantum bit error rate of 6.9 % at a rate of 0.59 bits per second, from which we were able to distill a 3.9 kbit secure key
Macro- and microscopic properties of strontium doped indium oxide
Solid state synthesis and physical mechanisms of electrical conductivity
variation in polycrystalline, strontium doped indium oxide In2O3:(SrO)x were
investigated for materials with different doping levels at different
temperatures (T=20-300 C) and ambient atmosphere content including humidity and
low pressure. Gas sensing ability of these compounds as well as the sample
resistance appeared to increase by 4 and 8 orders of the magnitude,
respectively, with the doping level increase from zero up to x=10%. The
conductance variation due to doping is explained by two mechanisms:
acceptor-like electrical activity of Sr as a point defect and appearance of an
additional phase of SrIn2O4. An unusual property of high level (x=10%) doped
samples is a possibility of extraordinarily large and fast oxygen exchange with
ambient atmosphere at not very high temperatures (100-200 C). This peculiarity
is explained by friable structure of crystallite surface. Friable structure
provides relatively fast transition of samples from high to low resistive state
at the expense of high conductance of the near surface layer of the grains.
Microscopic study of the electro-diffusion process at the surface of oxygen
deficient samples allowed estimation of the diffusion coefficient of oxygen
vacancies in the friable surface layer at room temperature as 3x10^(-13)
cm^2/s, which is by one order of the magnitude smaller than that known for
amorphous indium oxide films.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 39 reference
The analysis of facial beauty: an emerging area of research in pattern analysis
Much research presented recently supports the idea that the human perception of attractiveness is data-driven and largely irrespective of the perceiver. This suggests using pattern analysis techniques for beauty analysis. Several scientific papers on this subject are appearing in image processing, computer vision and pattern analysis contexts, or use techniques of these areas. In this paper, we will survey the recent studies on automatic analysis of facial beauty, and discuss research lines and practical application
