    The goal of the MEANING project (IST-2001-34460) is to develop tools for the automatic acquisition of lexical knowledge that will help Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD). The acquired lexical knowledge from various sources and various languages is stored in the Multilingual Central Repository (MCR) (Atserias et al 04), which is based on the design of the EuroWordNet database.     Preliminary results using a P300 brain-computer interface speller: a possible interaction effect between presentation paradigm and set of stimuli

Springer, ChamSeveral proposals to improve the performance controlling a P300-based BCI speller have been studied using the standard row-column presentation (RCP) par-adigm. However, this paradigm could not be suitable for those patients with lack of gaze control. To solve that, the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) para-digm, which presents the stimuli located in the same position, has been proposed in previous studies. Thus, the aim of the present work is to assess if a stimuli set of pictures that improves the performance in RCP, could also improve the per-formance in a RSVP paradigm. Six participants have controlled four conditions in a calibration task: letters in RCP, pictures in RCP, letters in RSVP and pictures in RSVP. The results showed that pictures in RCP obtained the best accuracy and information transfer rate. The improvement effect given by pictures was greater in the RCP paradigm than in RSVP.     Contextual factors among indiscriminate or larger attacks on food or water supplies, 1946-2015

    This research updates previous inventories of malicious attacks on food and water to include data from 1946 through mid-2015. A systematic search of news reports, databases and previous inventories of poisoning events was undertaken. Incidents that threatened or were intended to achieve direct harm to humans, and that were either relatively large (number of victims > 4 or indiscriminate in intent or realisation were included. Agents could be chemical, biological or radio-nuclear. Reports of candidate incidents were subjected to systematic inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as validity analysis (not always clearly undertaken in previous inventories of such attacks). We summarise contextual aspects of the attacks that may be important for scenario prioritisation, modelling and defensive preparedness. Opportunity is key to most realised attacks, particularly access to dangerous agents. The most common motives and relative success rate in causing harm were very different between food and water attacks. The likelihood that people were made ill or died also varied by food/water mode, and according to motive and opportunity for delivery of the hazardous agent. Deaths and illness associated with attacks during food manufacture and prior to sale have been fewer than those in some other contexts. Valuable opportunities for food defence improvements are identified in other contexts, especially food prepared in private or community settings

    The asymptotic regimes of the N-site complex Toda chain (CTC) with fixed ends related to the classical series of simple Lie algebras are classified. It is shown that the CTC models have much richer variety of asymptotic regimes than the real Toda chain (RTC). Besides asymptotically free propagation (the only possible regime for the RTC), CTC allow bound state regimes, various intermediate regimes when one (or several) group(s) of particles form bound state(s), singular and degenerate solutions. These results can be used e.g., in describing the soliton interactions of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation.     Microarray and pathway analysis reveals decreased CDC25A and increased CDC42 associated with slow growth of BCL2 overexpressing immortalized breast cell line

    Bcl-2 is an anti-apoptotic protein that is frequently overex-pressed in cancer cells but its role in carcinogenesis is not clear. We are interested in how Bcl-2 expression affects non-cancerous breast cells and its role in the cell cycle. We prepared an MCF10A breast epithelial cell line that stably overexpressed Bcl-2. We analyzed the cells by flow cytometry after synchronization, and used cDNA microarrays with quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRTPCR) to determine differences in gene expression. The microarray data was subjected to two pathway analysis tools, parametric analysis of gene set enrichment (PAGE) and ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA), and western analysis was carried out to determine the correlation between mRNA and protein levels. The MCF10A/Bcl-2 cells exhibited a slow-growth phenotype compared to control MCF10A/Neo cells that we attributed to a slowing of the G1-S cell cycle transition. A total of 363 genes were differentially expressed by at least two-fold, 307 upregulated and 56 downregulated. PAGE identified 22 significantly changed gene sets. The highest ranked network of genes identified by IPA contained 24 genes. Genes that were chosen for further analysis were confirmed by qRT-PCR, however, the western analysis did not always confirm differential expression of the proteins. Downregulation of the phosphatase CDC25A could solely be responsible for the slow growth pheno-type in MCF10A/Bcl-2 cells. Increased levels of GTPase Cdc42 could be adding to this effect. PAGE and IPA are valuable tools for microarray analysis, but protein expression results do not always follow mRNA expression results. Originally published Cell Cycle, Vol. 7, No. 19, Oct. 200

    Stringy Toda Cosmologies

    We discuss a particular stringy modular cosmology with two axion fields in seven space-time dimensions, decomposable as a time and two flat three-spaces. The effective equations of motion for the problem are those of the SU(3)SU(3) Toda molecule, and hence are integrable. We write down the solutions, and show that all of them are singular. They can be thought of as a generalization of the Pre-Big-Bang cosmology with excited internal degrees of freedom, and still suffering from the graceful exit problem. Some of the solutions however show a rather unexpected property: some of their spatial sections shrink to a point in spite of winding modes wrapped around them. We also comment how more general, anisotropic, solutions, with fewer Killing symmetries can be obtained with the help of STU dualities.Comment: 22 pages, latex, no figures.     This paper discusses the potential role of social software in supporting teamwork and collaborative project management in higher education. Based on the fact that social software has been widely spread among young students nowadays, using it for collaborative learning is believed to increase students' involvement and create learning incentives. Two social software platforms, Graaasp and Google Wave are examined in terms of sustaining collaborative learning activities. Relevant existing features and possible extensions that enhance the learning experience are addressed. Benefits and challenges resulting from the bottom-up learning paradigm are also presented

    Physics in Riemann's mathematical papers

    Riemann's mathematical papers contain many ideas that arise from physics, and some of them are motivated by problems from physics. In fact, it is not easy to separate Riemann's ideas in mathematics from those in physics. Furthermore, Riemann's philosophical ideas are often in the background of his work on science. The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of Riemann's mathematical results based on physical reasoning or motivated by physics. We also elaborate on the relation with philosophy. While we discuss some of Riemann's philosophical points of view, we review some ideas on the same subjects emitted by Riemann's predecessors, and in particular Greek philosophers, mainly the pre-socratics and Aristotle.
