Conditions for one-dimensional supersonic flow of quantum gases
One can use transsonic Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali atoms to establish
the laboratory analog of the event horizon and to measure the acoustic version
of Hawking radiation. We determine the conditions for supersonic flow and the
Hawking temperature for realistic condensates on waveguides where an external
potential plays the role of a supersonic nozzle. The transition to supersonic
speed occurs at the potential maximum and the Hawking temperature is entirely
determined by the curvature of the potential
The Road Towards the ILC: Higgs, Top/QCD, Loops
The International Linear e+e- Collider (ILC) could go into operation in the
second half of the upcoming decade. Experimental analyses and theory
calculations for the physics at the ILC are currently performed. We review
recent progress, as presented at the LCWS06 in Bangalore, India, in the fields
of Higgs boson physics and top/QCD. Also the area of loop calculations,

Ion Trap Mass Spectrometers for Identity, Abundance and Behavior of Volatiles on the Moon
NASA GSFC and The Open University (UK) are collaborating to deploy an Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer on the Moon to investigate the lunar water cycle. The ITMS is flight-proven throughthe Rosetta Philae comet lander mission. It is also being developed under ESA funding to analyse samples drilled from beneath the lunar surface on the Roscosmos Luna-27 lander (2025).Now, GSFC and OU will now develop a compact ITMS instrument to study the near-surface lunar exosphere on board a CLPS Astrobotic lander at Lacus Mortis in 2021
Hydrodynamic Spinodal Decomposition: Growth Kinetics and Scaling Functions
We examine the effects of hydrodynamics on the late stage kinetics in
spinodal decomposition. From computer simulations of a lattice Boltzmann scheme
we observe, for critical quenches, that single phase domains grow
asymptotically like , with in two dimensions
and in three dimensions, both in excellent agreement with

Superconducting Magnetization above the Irreversibility Line in Tl2Ba2CuO6
Piezolever torque magnetometry has been used to measure the magnetization of
superconducting Tl2Ba2CuO6. Three crystals with different levels of oxygen
overdoping were investigated in magnetic fields up to 10 Tesla. In all cases,
the magnetization above the irreversibility line was found to depart from the
behaviour M ~ ln(Hc2/H) of a simple London-like vortex liquid. In particular,
for a strongly overdoped (Tc = 15K) crystal, the remnant superconducting order
above the irreversibility line is characterized by a linear diamagnetic
response (M ~ H) that persists well above Tc and also up to the highest field

Flux penetration in slab shaped Type-I superconductors
We study the problem of flux penetration into type--I superconductors with
high demagnetization factor (slab geometry).Assuming that the interface between
the normal and superconducting regions is sharp, that flux diffuses rapidly in
the normal regions, and that thermal effects are negligible, we analyze the
process by which flux invades the sample as the applied field is increased
slowly from zero.We find that flux does not penetrate gradually.Rather there is
an instability in the process and the flux penetrates from the boundary in a
series of bursts, accompanied by the formation of isolated droplets of the
normal phase, leading to a multiply connected flux domain structure similar to

A powerful intervention: general practitioners' use of sickness certification in depression
<b>Background</b> Depression is frequently cited as the reason for sickness absence, and it is estimated that sickness certificates are issued in one third of consultations for depression. Previous research has considered GP views of sickness certification but not specifically in relation to depression. This study aimed to explore GPs views of sickness certification in relation to depression.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> A purposive sample of GP practices across Scotland was selected to reflect variations in levels of incapacity claimants and antidepressant prescribing. Qualitative interviews were carried out between 2008 and 2009.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> A total of 30 GPs were interviewed. A number of common themes emerged including the perceived importance of GP advocacy on behalf of their patients, the tensions between stakeholders involved in the sickness certification system, the need to respond flexibly to patients who present with depression and the therapeutic nature of time away from work as well as the benefits of work. GPs reported that most patients with depression returned to work after a short period of absence and that it was often difficult to predict which patients would struggle to return to work.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b>
GPs reported that dealing with sickness certification and depression presents distinct challenges. Sickness certificates are often viewed as powerful interventions, the effectiveness of time away from work for those with depression should be subject to robust enquiry
Representation theory of some infinite-dimensional algebras arising in continuously controlled algebra and topology
In this paper we determine the representation type of some algebras of
infinite matrices continuously controlled at infinity by a compact metrizable
space. We explicitly classify their finitely presented modules in the finite
and tame cases. The algebra of row-column-finite (or locally finite) matrices
over an arbitrary field is one of the algebras considered in this paper, its
representation type is shown to be finite.Comment: 33 page
Nonlinear Hydrodynamics of a Hard Sphere Fluid Near the Glass Transition
We conduct a numerical study of the dynamic behavior of a dense hard sphere
fluid by deriving and integrating a set of Langevin equations. The statics of
the system is described by a free energy functional of the
Ramakrishnan-Yussouff form. We find that the system exhibits glassy behavior as
evidenced through stretched exponential decay and two-stage relaxation of the
density correlation function. The characteristic times grow with increasing
density according to the Vogel-Fulcher law. The wavenumber dependence of the
kinetics is extensively explored. The connection of our results with
