Complexity bounds on supermesh construction for quasi-uniform meshes
Projecting fields between different meshes commonly arises in computational
physics. This operation requires a supermesh construction and its computational
cost is proportional to the number of cells of the supermesh . Given any two
quasi-uniform meshes of and cells respectively, we show under
standard assumptions that n is proportional to . This result
substantially improves on the best currently available upper bound on and
is fundamental for the analysis of algorithms that use supermeshes
Deflation for semismooth equations
Variational inequalities can in general support distinct solutions. In this
paper we study an algorithm for computing distinct solutions of a variational
inequality, without varying the initial guess supplied to the solver. The
central idea is the combination of a semismooth Newton method with a deflation
operator that eliminates known solutions from consideration. Given one root of
a semismooth residual, deflation constructs a new problem for which a
semismooth Newton method will not converge to the known root, even from the
same initial guess. This enables the discovery of other roots. We prove the
effectiveness of the deflation technique under the same assumptions that
guarantee locally superlinear convergence of a semismooth Newton method. We
demonstrate its utility on various finite- and infinite-dimensional examples
drawn from constrained optimization, game theory, economics and solid
mechanics.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure

The geometry and physical properties of exhaust clouds generated during the static firing of S-1C and S-2 rocket engines
An experimental program was conducted during the static firing of the S-1C stage 13, 14, and 15 rocket engines and the S-2 stage 13, 14, and 15 rocket engines. The data compiled during the experimental program consisted of photographic recordings of the time-dependent growth and diffusion of the exhaust clouds, the collection of meteorological data in the ambient atmosphere, and the acquisition of data on the physical structure of the exhaust clouds which were obtained by flying instrumented aircraft through the clouds. A new technique was developed to verify the previous measurements of evaporation and entrainment of blast deflector cooling water into the cloud. The results of the experimental program indicate that at the lower altitudes the rocket exhaust cloud or plume closely resembles a free-jet type of flow. At the upper altitudes, where the cloud is approaching an equilibrium condition, structure is very similar to a natural cumulus cloud

BlogForever D5.1: Design and Specification of Case Studies
This document presents the specification and design of six case studies for testing the BlogForever platform implementation process. The report explains the data collection plan where users of the repository will provide usability feedback through questionnaires as well as details of scalability analysis through the creation of specific log files analytics. The case studies will investigate the sustainability of the platform, that it meets potential usersâ needs and that is has an important long term impact

First-Order Vortex Lattice Melting and Magnetization of YBaCuO$_{7-\delta}
We present the first non-mean-field calculation of the magnetization
of YBaCuO both above and below the flux-lattice melting
temperature . The results are in good agreement with experiment as a
function of transverse applied field . The effects of fluctuations in both
order parameter and magnetic induction are included in the
Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional: fluctuates within the
lowest Landau level in each layer, while fluctuates uniformly according to
the appropriate Boltzmann factor. The second derivative is predicted to be negative throughout the vortex liquid state and
positive in the solid state. The discontinuities in entropy and magnetization
at melting are calculated to be per flux line per layer and
~emu~cm at a field of 50 kOe.Comment: 11 pages, 4 PostScript figures in one uuencoded fil
