A good leaf order on simplicial trees

Using the existence of a good leaf in every simplicial tree, we order the facets of a simplicial tree in order to find combinatorial information about the Betti numbers of its facet ideal. Applications include an Eliahou-Kervaire splitting of the ideal, as well as a refinement of a recursive formula of H\`a and Van Tuyl for computing the graded Betti numbers of simplicial trees.Comment: 17 pages, to appear; Connections Between Algebra and Geometry, Birkhauser volume (2013

Inclusion Ideals Associated to Uniformly Increasing Hypergraphs

In this paper,we introduce the monomial ideals I(H) associated to a special class of non uniform hypergraphs H(X; E; d) namely uniformly increasing hypergraphs. These ideals are named as inclusion ideals. In this paper, we discuss some algebraic properties of these inclusion ideals. In particular, we give an upper bound of the Castlenouvo-Mumford regularity of the special dual ideal I^[*](H) of the inclusion ideal.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

Investigation on the Interactions of NiCR and NiCR-2H with DNA

    Get PDF
We report here a biophysical and biochemical approach to determine the differences in interactions of NiCR and NiCR-2H with DNA. Our goal is to determine whether such interactions are responsible for the recently observed differences in their cytotoxicity toward MCF-7 cancer cells. Viscosity measurement and fluorescence displacement titration indicated that both NiCR and NiCR-2H bind weakly to duplex DNA in the grooves. The coordination of NiCR-2H with the N-7 of 2′-deoxyguanosine 5′-monophosphate (5′-dGMP) is stronger than that of NiCR as determined by 1H NMR. NiCR-2H, like NiCR, can selectively oxidize guanines present in distinctive DNA structures (e.g., bulges), and notably, NiCR-2H oxidizes guanines more efficiently than NiCR. In addition, UV and 1H NMR studies revealed that NiCR is oxidized into NiCR-2H in the presence of KHSO5 at low molar ratios with respect to NiCR (≤4)

Consumption of cocoa flavanols results in acute improvements in mood and cognitive performance during sustained mental effort

Cocoa flavanols (CF) positively influence physiological processes in ways that suggest their consumption may improve aspects of cognitive function. This study investigated the acute cognitive and subjective effects of CF consumption during sustained mental demand. In this randomized, controlled, double-blinded, balanced, three period crossover trial 30 healthy adults consumed drinks containing 520 mg, 994 mg CF and a matched control, with a three-day washout between drinks. Assessments included the state anxiety inventory and repeated 10-min cycles of a Cognitive Demand Battery comprising of two serial subtraction tasks (Serial Threes and Serial Sevens), a Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP) task and a mental fatigue scale, over the course of 1 h. Consumption of both 520 mg and 994 mg CF significantly improved Serial Threes performance. The 994 mg CF beverage significantly speeded RVIP responses but also resulted in more errors during Serial Sevens. Increases in self-reported mental fatigue were significantly attenuated by the consumption of the 520 mg CF beverage only. This is the first report of acute cognitive improvements following CF consumption in healthy adults. While the mechanisms underlying the effects are unknown they may be related to known effects of CF on endothelial function and blood flow

99mTc-anionic linear globular dendrimer-G2-phenylalanine conjugate: Novel brain tumor SPECT imaging

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was the investigation of the targeting potential of99mTc-Labeled dendrimer-phenylalanine conjugate for brain tumor SPECT imaging. L-Type amino acid transporters (LAT1) are highly expressed in the blood-brain barrier as well as in brain cancer cells; thus, targeting LAT1 using phenylalanine could improve the sensitivity and specificity of radiosynthesis nanocarrier. In this study, the dendrimer G2phenylalanine conjugate was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, particle size, and zeta potential. MTT assay was done for cell viability measurement in different concentrations of nanoparticles (0.125, 0.25, 0.5 mg/ml) on C6 glioma cell lines; the uptake study was evaluated using fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) instrument; finally, SPECT scintigraphy in glioma tumor-bearing Wistar rats was done. The dendrimer-phenylalanine conjugate particle size was found in the range of 74.14±2.2 to 109±3.1 nm, with a slightly negative surface charge. Also, phenylalanine present on the dendrimer's surface phenylalanine conjugate enhanced the dendrimer's cellular uptakephenylalanine conjugate on the C6 glioma cell line. Results of SPECT imaging and fluorescence studies revealed that dendrimer phenylalanine conjugate accumulated into the brain tumor cells, and it can be suggested as a promising brain-targeting probe with no toxicity in brain tumor imaging. © 2020 by the authors

Multilayered genetic and omics dissection of mitochondrial activity in a mouse reference population

The manner by which genotype and environment affect complex phenotypes is one of the fundamental questions in biology. In this study, we quantified the transcriptome--a subset of the metabolome--and, using targeted proteomics, quantified a subset of the liver proteome from 40 strains of the BXD mouse genetic reference population on two diverse diets. We discovered dozens of transcript, protein, and metabolite QTLs, several of which linked to metabolic phenotypes. Most prominently, Dhtkd1 was identified as a primary regulator of 2-aminoadipate, explaining variance in fasted glucose and diabetes status in both mice and humans. These integrated molecular profiles also allowed further characterization of complex pathways, particularly the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR(mt)). UPR(mt) shows strikingly variant responses at the transcript and protein level that are remarkably conserved among C. elegans, mice, and humans. Overall, these examples demonstrate the value of an integrated multilayered omics approach to characterize complex metabolic phenotypes

Enhancement of Workers' Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare in Ashghal Projects

    Get PDF
One of Ashghal's core values and top priority is the occupational health and safety of customers, employees and contractors. Ashghal prioritizes and is concerned about developing the welfare of workers on the site and in the camp. Ashghal develops welfare specifications for the projects to protect workers and be sure the specifications align with international and national requirements. The specification covers the facilities within the site, such as: number of toilets, handwashing basins, rest area/mess hall, shelter, drinking water, first aid room, transportation, clinic, etc. Ashghal develops an implementation and monitoring system to be sure welfare specifications are provided to all workers, referring to welfare specifications as contractual requirements, then linking workers' welfare as one of the monthly KPIs for the project, implementing it by the contractor, and monitoring it by the consultant. Ashghal is also working on developing specifications and requirements for workers' welfare, for example, developing and updating the specifications and requirements for their welfare on Ashghal construction sites, which will be issued soon as the "ACS.
