    In the nursery at the Department of Science Foresty, of the UFSM, during 8 months, was analysed the behaviour of the seedlings of Balfouodendron riedelianum (Engl.) Engl., in different degrees of luminosity, in the initial growth stage. Blocks with four repetitions and with four levels of luminosity (30, 50, 70 and 100%) were used (at random) as an experimental delineation. The height and neck diameters were take for each 30 (thirty) days period, totaling 5 (five) evaluations, obtaining a final result statistically superior in 30% and 79,59% of luminosity respectively. The total fesh mass, of air part and radicular was obtained with 76,21% 69,98% and 78,75% of luminosity, respectively. The maximun production of drought matter of seedlings was obtained with 67,56% of luminosity, the larger root/aerial part relation with 78,35% and the best radicular prolongation with 76,16% of luminosity, In all of the evaluated parameters, the treatment where the seedlings were exposed to the total light showed a deficient development, with a high rate of mortality. The Balfourodendron riedelianum (Engl.)     Bioactivity of the specie Annona coriacea: A systematic review / Bioatividade da espécie Annona coriacea: Uma revisão sistemática

    The araticum (Annona coriacea Mart.) is a tree of the Annonaceae family with great distribution in the northern Cerrados of the State of PiauĂ­. Several species of this family have medicinal use and demonstrate some biological activities that have already been experimentally proven such as antihelmintic, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antinociceptive, antiprotozoal, insecticidal, parasiticidal and antioxidant activities due to the presence of acetogenins. The objective of this study was to carry out a scientific and technological prospection of the Annona coriacea plant related totickcidal activity. The scientific bases used were; PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science and the technological databases include; EPO, WIPO, USPTO, DII, LATIPAT and INPI, with the following keywords: Annona coriacea, Annona coriacea and tickcidal, Annona coriacea and acaricide and Annona coriacea and biocide, all articles published in the last decade and without temporal cut for patent registration being counted. We found 156 articles and 17 patents, most of them dealing with medicinal use and chemical composition of the plant. The study showed that there is interest in the plant studied, but there is a wide field to carryout studies on technological innovation and development of new products, as in the area of tickcidal products

    No viveiro do Departamento de Ciências Florestais, UFSM, Santa Maria, RS, durante 8 meses, foi analisado o comportamento das plântulas de Balfourodendron riedelianum, em diferentes níveis de luminosidade, na fase inicial de crescimento. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso com quatro níveis de luminosidade: 30%, 50%, 70% e 100%. As alturas e diâmetros de colo foram tomados a cada 30 (trinta) dias, totalizando 5 (cinco) avaliações, obtendo-se um resultado final estatísticamente superior em 30% e 79,59% de luminosidade, respectivamente. A massa fresca total da parte aérea e radicular foi alcançada com 76,21%; 69,98% e 78,75% de luminosidade, respectivamente. A produção máxima de matéria seca das plântulas foi alcançada com 67,56% de luminosidade e a o valos mais elevado da relação raiz/parte aérea com 78,35% e o maior alongamento radicular com 76,16% de luminosidade. Em todos os parâmetros avaliados, o tratamento em que as plântulas foram expostas à luz total apresentaram um desenvolvimento deficiente, ocorrendo uma alta taxa de mortalidade

    The users centered design of a new digital fluorometer

    The fluorometer is an equipment used in chemical analysis laboratories, research institutes and nuclear fuel cycle companies. This equipment measures an unknown amount of uranium in ores, rivers, etc. The fluorometer functioning is based on the uranium fluorescence when submitted to the ultraviolet radiation incidence. The fluorescence is measured by an electronic optic system with optics filters, photomultiplier tube, and a current amplifier. The user centered design involvers the user in the product development in all phases of the design process. Users are not simply consulted at the beginning of the design process and evaluated the system at the end; they are treated as partners throughout the design process. The user centered design emphasizes the needs and abilities of the users and improves the usability of the equipment. The activity centered design emphasizes the development of the equipment with a deep understanding of the users activities and of the current work practices of the users. The aim of this paper is to present a methodological framework that contributes to the design and evaluation of a new digital fluorometer towards an approach related to the users and their activities. This methodological framework includes users-based testing, interviews, questionnaires, human factors standards and guidelines, the users activity analysis and users satisfaction questionnaire

    Lycopene-Rich Extract from Red Guava (<i>Psidium guajava</i> L.) Decreases Plasma Triglycerides and Improves Oxidative Stress Biomarkers on Experimentally-Induced Dyslipidemia in Hamsters

    This work assessed the effects of a 28-day treatment with lycopene-rich extract (LRE) from red guava fruit (Psidium guajava L.) on the lipid profile and oxidative stress in an experimental model of dyslipidemia. Male hamsters (116.5 &#177; 2.16 g) were fed with the AIN 93G diet containing casein (20%), coconut fat (13.5%) and cholesterol (0.1%). The animals were divided into four groups: normolipidemic control (standard feed; NC, n = 7); hypercholesterolemic control (HC, n = 7); LRE 25 mg/kg/day (LRE-25, n = 7) and LRE 50 mg/kg/day (LRE-50, n = 9). After treatment, plasma concentrations of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDL-c), malondialdehyde (MDA-p) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), as well as erythrocytic superoxide dismutase (SOD-e) and the atherogenic index, were determined. Malondialdehyde (MDA-h), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD-h) levels were assessed. Feed intake (FI) and weight gain (WG) were also determined. The LRE-25 group presented significantly lower TG levels and atherogenic index than did the HC group (p &lt; 0.05). Both LRE-25 and LRE-50 groups presented lower levels of MDA-p and MPO than did the HC group (p &lt; 0.05). LRE demonstrated a promising effect against dyslipidemia and oxidative stress
