Aeronautical imagination and the figure of the French aviator in the Azorean press (1935/1949)
In the aftermath of “Atlantic Fever”, several test crews from the most advanced nations in aviation came to the Azores, fighting for the establishment of commercial routes between the Old and the New World. This context explains the 1935 aeronautical mission of the French aviator, Henry Nomy. The analysis of articles in the Azorean newspapers of this period shows the emphasis on the heroic figure of the aviator. In this article, we contrast this aeronautical imaginary with the one prevailing in the Azorean press’ coverage of the accident of the Constellation of Air France, which flew from Paris to New York with a stopover in Santa Maria (Azores) and crashed on the island of São Miguel on October 28, 1949.
De nos jours, il est considĂ©rĂ© comme l'un des plus importants auteurs français contemporains, et la vitalitĂ© du roman français est partout reconnue.ABSTRACT: If we look closely at the different stages of Jean Echenoz's work, we will find that they correspond to the most important transformations undergone by the French novel since the eighties. He published his first novel in 1979, when the literary press proclaimed the death of the novel. The formal aspects of the novel played a central role in his work then In a second stage (after Un An, 1997), this author achieves a balance between his rethinking of the formal aspects of the novel and more elaborate plots. It's then that literary critics and readers alike start noticing the quality of his work. In a third stage of his work (since Ravel (2006) Echenoz shares the tendency of the French novel nowadays to deal with biography issues. He is now considered one of the most famous French contemporary authors and the French novel is said to be alive again
Dans ces bras-là (2000) can be described as a search for identity by the detour of the other. Indeed, the novel is built on three dichotomous relations namely autobiography-fiction, woman-man and writing-oral language. The result is a complex and deep look at Camille Laurens' identity: a woman, an author, but also the narrator of a narrative
Traduire l’étranger De Mau Tempo no Canal à Gros Temps sur L'archipel
They accentuate the role of the author and his writing options rather than the verisimilitude of the fictional world: it is this voice which directly addresses the reader and the situation under which it communicates which assures verisimilitude and creates what one could call an "authorial illusion", in other words the belief in a direct contact or relationship between reader and author
The constant use of intertextuality in contemporary novels can become a challenge for translators. This presence of intertextual borrowings builds a playful relationship between the author, who places excerpts of a different nature within his own text, and the reader, who is expected to discover and interpret them. To translate these novels and these intertextual borrowings the translator must assume a different role from the one he is traditionally expect to play: he must stop being the translator-reproducer and start being the translator-creator
14 is a recently published novel by a French contemporary writer, Jean Echenoz. Having the First World War as its core subject, the text covers the main traditional themes of war novels. Its interest, however, does not lie in what it says about the war, but rather in how the war is told. In fact, 14 points out the main horrors of the war, without engaging in pathos. In order to do so, Echenoz resorts to two groups of techniques, whose main purpose is to lighten the dramatic effect of the war scenes depicted. Surprisingly, the result is a text which recounts the crude horrors of war
Back then, some names were created to designate them, thus creating a group effect. As the end of the century approaches, it's time to think over the twentieth century French novel. Several studies are then published which make an effort to select the authors and suggest some ways to label them. This article tries to seize how these novels were received in France, from the eighties through the early twentieth century, and to reflect on how they are thought of nowadays
