Seismic Signatures of the 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O Reaction Rate in White Dwarf Models with Overshooting

We consider the combined effects that overshooting and the 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O reaction rate have on variable white dwarf stellar models. We find that carbon-oxygen white dwarf models continue to yield pulsation signatures of the current experimental 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O reaction rate probability distribution function when overshooting is included in the evolution. These signatures hold because the resonating mantle region, encompassing \simeq\,0.2\,\Msun\ in a typical \simeq\,0.6\,\Msun\ white dwarf model, still undergoes radiative helium burning during the evolution to a white dwarf. Our specific models show two potential low-order adiabatic g-modes, g2g_2 and g6g_6, that signalize the 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O reaction rate probability distribution function. Both g-mode signatures induce average relative period shifts of ΔP/P=0.44%\Delta P/P = 0.44 \% and ΔP/P=1.33%\Delta P/P = 1.33\% for g2g_2 and g6g_6 respectively. We find that g6g_6 is a trapped mode, and the g2g_2 period signature is inversely proportional to the 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O reaction rate. The g6g_6 period signature generally separates the slower and faster reaction rates, and has a maximum relative period shift of ΔP/P=3.45%\Delta P/P = 3.45\%. We conclude that low-order g-mode periods from carbon-oxygen white dwarfs may still serve as viable probes for the 12C({\alpha}, {\gamma})16O reaction rate probability distribution function when overshooting is included in the evolution.Comment: 18 pages, 10 total figures, 2 online interactive figures, zenodo data set link included. In recent years, social media has been increasing widely and obviously as a media for users expressing their emotions and feelings through thousands of posts and comments related to tourism companies. As a consequence, it became difficult for tourists to read all the comments to determine whether these opinions are positive or negative to assess the success of a tourism company. In this paper, a modest model is proposed to assess e-tourism companies using Iraqi dialect reviews collected from Facebook. The reviews are analyzed using text mining techniques for sentiment classification. The generated sentiment words are classified into positive, negative and neutral comments by utilizing Rough Set Theory, Naïve Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbor methods. After experimental results, it was determined that out of 71 tested Iraqi tourism companies, 28% from these companies have very good assessment, 26% from these companies have good assessment, 31% from these companies have medium assessment, 4% from these companies have acceptance assessment and 11% from these companies have bad assessment. These results helped the companies to improve their work and programs responding sufficiently and quickly to customer demands

Polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit kv1.4 by interacting with positively charged extracellular pore residues

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) modulate voltage-gated K(+) channel inactivation by an unknown site and mechanism. The effects of ω-6 and ω-3 PUFAs were investigated on the heterologously expressed K(v)1.4 channel. PUFAs inhibited wild-type K(v)1.4 during repetitive pulsing as a result of slowing of recovery from inactivation. In a mutant K(v)1.4 channel lacking N-type inactivation, PUFAs reversibly enhanced C-type inactivation (K(d), 15–43 μM). C-type inactivation was affected by extracellular H(+) and K(+) as well as PUFAs and there was an interaction among the three: the effect of PUFAs was reversed during acidosis and abolished on raising K(+). Replacement of two positively charged residues in the extracellular pore (H508 and K532) abolished the effects of the PUFAs (and extracellular H(+) and K(+)) on C-type inactivation but had no effect on the lipoelectric modulation of voltage sensor activation, suggesting two separable interaction sites/mechanisms of action of PUFAs. Charge calculations suggest that the acidic head group of the PUFAs raises the pK(a) of H508 and this reduces the K(+) occupancy of the selectivity filter, stabilizing the C-type inactivated state

Combined umbilical cord patching with amniotic membrane graft for corneal surface reconstruction

Background: Umbilical cord patch (UCP) grafts have been successfully used for glaucoma shunt tube coverage and conjunctival surface reconstruction. In recent years, the technique has emerged as a novel alternative for the reconstruction of corneal perforation and descemetocele. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combined UCP grafting and human amniotic membrane (HAM) transplantation for the management of corneal perforation or descemetocele. Methods: This prospective, non-comparative, interventional case series included nine eyes of nine patients with corneal descemetoceles and 28 eyes of 28 patients with corneal perforations, all in a clinically quiescent state. UCP grafting and HAM transplantation were combined to treat all patients. We re-examined the patients daily throughout the first week, weekly for 1 month, and then monthly for the first 6 months using slit-lamp examination and anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Results: We included 37 eyes with descemetocele or corneal perforation in a clinically quiescent state. The mean (standard deviation) ages of patients with corneal descemetocele and corneal perforation were 56.3 (18.8) years and 54.3 (18.1) years, respectively. The male-to-female ratios in patients with corneal descemetocele and corneal perforation were 56% to 44% and 61% to 39%, respectively. Postoperative corneal thickness increased significantly in eyes with descemetocele compared to preoperative values (P < 0.001). Postoperative best-corrected distance visual acuity improved significantly compared to preoperative values in eyes with descemetocele or corneal perforation (both P < 0.001), with relief of accompanying ocular symptoms. We did not observe any recurrence or complications such as rejection, infection, suture-related problems, or severe inflammation and all had a formed anterior chamber up to the final follow-up visit. Conclusions: Combined UCP grafting and HAM transplantation could be a promising alternative treatment for corneal perforation or descemetocele in clinically quiescent eyes, providing satisfactory reconstruction and functional outcomes. Further studies with robust designs, larger sample sizes, and longer follow-up are needed to verify the efficacy and safety of this modified surgical technique in enhancing vision and restoring anterior segment anatomical integrity in compromised corneas

Preliminary efficacy of a brief family intervention to prevent declining quality of life secondary to parental bone marrow transplantation

Get PDF
The primary purpose of this research was to develop and evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of a brief, cost-effective family-focused intervention to promote adaptive coping and quality of life throughout a parent's bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Targeted outcomes were cohesion, decreased use of avoidance coping, open communication and effective management of emotional distress. Participants included an intervention group of 31 families and 29 families in a control group who received usual care. Each family included the BMT recipient, a partner/caregiver and children 10-18 years old. The intervention included two dyadic sessions for the BMT recipient and the partner/caregiver, one individual session for the caregiver and two digital video discs (DVDs) for children. Statistical analyses indicated that the intervention had a positive impact on at least one aspect of the adaptation of each family member. Caregivers reported the most distress but benefitted least from the intervention, whereas recipients and children reported improvement in distress. Ratings of satisfaction/acceptability were high, with 97% responding that they would recommend the intervention to others. Plans for future research include increased intervention intensity for the caregiver, a larger more diverse sample and implementation over an extended period post BMT
