Wave scattering by discrete breathers
We present a theoretical study of linear wave scattering in one-dimensional
nonlinear lattices by intrinsic spatially localized dynamic excitations or
discrete breathers. These states appear in various nonlinear systems and
present a time-periodic localized scattering potential for plane waves. We
consider the case of elastic one-channel scattering, when the frequencies of
incoming and transmitted waves coincide, but the breather provides with
additional spatially localized ac channels whose presence may lead to various
interference patterns. The dependence of the transmission coefficient on the
wave number q and the breather frequency Omega_b is studied for different types
of breathers: acoustic and optical breathers, and rotobreathers. We identify
several typical scattering setups where the internal time dependence of the
breather is of crucial importance for the observed transmission properties.Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, submitted to CHAOS (Focus Issue
Light transmission assisted by Brewster-Zennek modes in chromium films carrying a subwavelength hole array
This work confirms that not only surface plasmons but many other kinds of
electromagnetic eigenmodes should be considered in explaining the values of the
transmittivity through a slab bearing a two-dimensional periodic corrugation.
Specifically, the role of Brewster-Zennek modes appearing in metallic films
exhibiting regions of weak positive dielectric constant. It is proposed that
these modes play a significant role in the light transmission in a thin
chromium film perforated with normal cylindrical holes, for appropriate lattice
parameters.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Published versio
Efimov states and their Fano resonances in a neutron-rich nucleus
Asymmetric resonances in elastic n+C scattering are attributed to
Efimov states of such neutron-rich nuclei, that is, three-body bound states of
the n+n+C system when none of the pairs is bound or some of them only
weakly bound. By fitting to the general resonance shape described by Fano, we
extract resonance position, width, and the "Fano profile index". While Efimov
states have been discussed extensively in many areas of physics, there is only
one very recent experimental observation in trimers of cesium atoms. The
conjunction that we present of the Efimov and Fano phenomena may lead to
experimental realization in nuclei.Comment: 4 double-column pages, 3 figure
Relations between environmental gradients and diversity indices of benthic invertebrates in lotic systems of northern Italy
Abstract. The relations between environmental gradients, as measured by 19 independent variables, and traditional diversity indices (taxonomic richness, diversity and evenness) of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the lotic systems of northern Italy were analyzed. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to describe the response of taxa to environmental gradients. Diversity indices were analyzed using generalized linear models (GLMs) with explanatory variables the first two major RDA axes. The results from RDA showed that taxa variance is mostly explained by altitude/latitude and combined pollution gradients. Taxonomic richness and diversity was higher in the low polluted upland sites (LPUs) in comparison to high polluted lowland sites (HPLs), suggesting that headwater streams have higher taxonomic richness than downstream reaches. On the other hand, evenness was lower in LPUs, probably due to the dominance of some taxa (e.g., Plecoptera) that are more tolerant of colder conditions
Entanglement, Mixedness, and Spin-Flip Symmetry in Multiple-Qubit Systems
A relationship between a recently introduced multipartite entanglement
measure, state mixedness, and spin-flip symmetry is established for any finite
number of qubits. It is also shown that, within those classes of states
invariant under the spin-flip transformation, there is a complementarity
relation between multipartite entanglement and mixedness. A number of example
classes of multiple-qubit systems are studied in light of this relationship.Comment: To appear in Physical Review A; submitted 14 May 200
Spatial effects of Fano resonance in local tunneling conductivity in vicinity of impurity on semiconductor surface
We present the results of local tunneling conductivity spatial distribution
detailed theoretical investigations in vicinity of impurity atom for a wide
range of applied bias voltage. We observed Fano resonance in tunneling
conductivity resulting from interference between resonant tunneling channel
through impurity energy level and direct tunneling channel between the
tunneling contact leads. We have found that interference between tunneling
channels strongly modifies form of tunneling conductivity measured by the
scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) depending on the distance
value from the impurity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Geometry and symmetries of multi-particle systems
The quantum dynamical evolution of atomic and molecular aggregates, from
their compact to their fragmented states, is parametrized by a single
collective radial parameter. Treating all the remaining particle coordinates in
d dimensions democratically, as a set of angles orthogonal to this collective
radius or by equivalent variables, bypasses all independent-particle
approximations. The invariance of the total kinetic energy under arbitrary
d-dimensional transformations which preserve the radial parameter gives rise to
novel quantum numbers and ladder operators interconnecting its eigenstates at
each value of the radial parameter.
We develop the systematics and technology of this approach, introducing the
relevant mathematics tutorially, by analogy to the familiar theory of angular
momentum in three dimensions. The angular basis functions so obtained are
treated in a manifestly coordinate-free manner, thus serving as a flexible
generalized basis for carrying out detailed studies of wavefunction evolution
in multi-particle systems.Comment: 37 pages, 2 eps figure
A Logical Modeling of Severe Ignorance
In the logical context, ignorance is traditionally defined recurring to epistemic logic. In particular, ignorance is essentially interpreted as “lack of knowledge”. This received view has - as we point out - some problems, in particular we will highlight how it does not allow to express a type of content-theoretic ignorance, i.e. an ignorance of φ that stems from an unfamiliarity with its meaning. Contrarily to this trend, in this paper, we introduce and investigate a modal logic having a primitive epistemic operator I, modeling ignorance. Our modal logic is essentially constructed on the modal logics based on weak Kleene three-valued logic introduced by Segerberg (Theoria, 33(1):53–71, 1997). Such non-classical propositional basis allows to define a Kripke-style semantics with the following, very intuitive, interpretation: a formula φ is ignored by an agent if φ is neither true nor false in every world accessible to the agent. As a consequence of this choice, we obtain a type of content-theoretic notion of ignorance, which is essentially different from the traditional approach. We dub it severe ignorance. We axiomatize, prove completeness and decidability for the logic of reflexive (three-valued) Kripke frames, which we find the most suitable candidate for our novel proposal and, finally, compare our approach with the most traditional one
Photon angular distribution and nuclear-state alignment in nuclear excitation by electron capture
The alignment of nuclear states resonantly formed in nuclear excitation by
electron capture (NEEC) is studied by means of a density matrix technique. The
vibrational excitations of the nucleus are described by a collective model and
the electrons are treated in a relativistic framework. Formulas for the angular
distribution of photons emitted in the nuclear relaxation are derived. We
present numerical results for alignment parameters and photon angular
distributions for a number of heavy elements in the case of E2 nuclear
transitions. Our results are intended to help future experimental attempts to
discern NEEC from radiative recombination, which is the dominant competing
process
A multi-photon Stokes-parameter invariant for entangled states
We consider the Minkowskian norm of the n-photon Stokes tensor, a scalar
invariant under the group realized by the transformations of stochastic local
quantum operations and classical communications (SLOCC). This invariant is
offered as a candidate entanglement measure for n-qubit states and discussed in
relation to measures of quantum state entanglement for certain important
classes of two-qubit and three-qubit systems. This invariant can be directly
estimated via a quantum network, obviating the need to perform laborious
quantum state tomography. We also show that this invariant directly captures
the extent of entanglement purification due to SLOCC filters.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review
