    Spatiotemporal studies of black spruce forest soils and implications for the fate of C

    Post-fire storage of carbon (C) in organic-soil horizons was measured in one Canadian and three Alaskan chronosequences in black spruce forests, together spanning stand ages of nearly 200 yrs. We used a simple mass balance model to derive estimates of inputs, losses, and accumulation rates of C on timescales of years to centuries. The model performed well for the surface and total organic soil layers and presented questions for resolving the dynamics of deeper organic soils. C accumulation in all study areas is on the order of 20–40 gC/m2/yr for stand ages up to ∼200 yrs. Much larger fluxes, both positive and negative, are detected using incremental changes in soil C stocks and by other studies using eddy covariance methods for CO2. This difference suggests that over the course of stand replacement, about 80% of all net primary production (NPP) is returned to the atmosphere within a fire cycle, while about 20% of NPP enters the organic soil layers and becomes available for stabilization or loss via decomposition, leaching, or combustion. Shifts toward more frequent and more severe burning and degradation of deep organic horizons would likely result in an acceleration of the carbon cycle, with greater CO2 emissions from these systems overall

    Autotuning methods for transmission electron microscopy are reviewed, and a distinction is drawn between predictive and non-predictive methods. The predictive methods make better use of the input data and therefore need fewer images to carry out complete autotuning. They typically require high quality of input data, which can be best provided by cooled slow-scan charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras. Two predictive methods are considered in more detail. These are the tilt-induced image shift (TIS) method of Koster, van der Mast and de Ruijter, and a new automated diffractogram analysis (ADA) method, which is introduced in this paper. The ADA method is shown to be capable of accurately aligning, stigmating and focussing a TEM in less than 30 seconds using just three high resolution images, and of automatically calibrating all the needed microscope parameters

    Optical properties of V2O3 in its whole phase diagram

    Vanadium sesquioxide V2O3 is considered a textbook example of Mott-Hubbard physics. In this paper we present an extended optical study of its whole temperature/doping phase diagram as obtained by doping the pure material with M=Cr or Ti atoms (V1-xMx)2O3. We reveal that its thermodynamically stable metallic and insulating phases, although macroscopically equivalent, show very different low-energy electrodynamics. The Cr and Ti doping drastically change both the antiferromagnetic gap and the paramagnetic metallic properties. A slight chromium content induces a mesoscopic electronic phase separation, while the pure compound is characterized by short-lived quasiparticles at high temperature. This study thus provides a new comprehensive scenario of the Mott-Hubbard physics in the prototype compound V2O3

    Solution heat treatment, forming and in-die quenching of a commercial sheet magnesium alloy into a complex-shaped component: experimentation and FE analysis

    Interest in lightweight materials, particularly magnesium alloys, has increased significantly with rising efficiency requirements in the automotive sector. Magnesium is the lightest available structural metal, with a density approximately 35% lower than that of aluminium. The potential is great for magnesium to become a primary material used in future low carbon vehicle structures; however, there are significant obstacles, namely low ductility and formability, particularly at room temperature. The aim of this work is to present the feasibility of using the solution Heat treatment, Forming, and in-die Quenching (HFQ) process to produce complex shapes from a sheet magnesium alloy, and to use the results to verify a simulation of the process developed using commercial FE software. Uniaxial tensile tests were initially conducted to establish the optimum parameters for forming the part. Stamping trials were then carried out using these parameters, and a simulation set up modelling the forming operation.     Estudio preliminar sobre el efecto del ultrasonido en las propiedades fisicoquímicas del vino tinto

    Ultrasound is regarded as a potential alternative method for improving the quality of some wines. This study was initiated with the objective of evaluating the effects of ultrasound on some important physicochemical properties of red wine such as chromatic characteristics (CC), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, titratable acidity (TA), total phenolic compounds (TPCs) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity (DFRSA). The operational parameters assessed were ultrasound power, ultrasound frequency, exposure time and bath temperature. Results illustrated that there were significant changes in CC, EC and TPC while pH and TA hardly changed except for samples treated at high temperatures. DFRSA was correlated to TPC during ultrasonic treatment. Application of principal component analysis to the experimental data suggested that exposure time was the factor with the greatest ability to induce changes on wine. Results suggested that ultrasound may be applied to improve some physicochemical properties of red wine.El ultrasonido se considera uno de los métodos alternativos potenciales para mejorar la calidad de algunos vinos. Se comenzó este estudio con el objetivo de evaluar los efectos del ultrasonido en algunas de la propiedades fisicoquímicas importantes del vino tinto como son: las características cromáticas (CC), la conductividad eléctrica (EC), el pH, la acidez (TA), los compuestos fenólicos totales (TPC) y el DPPH (1,1-difenil-2-picrilhidrazil) de actividad de eliminación de radicales libres (DFRSA). Los parámetros operacionales examinados fueron: la potencia de ultrasonido, la frecuencia de ultrasonido, el tiempo de exposición y la temperatura de baño. Los resultados ilustraron la existencia de cambios significativos en CC, EC y TPC, mientras que el pH y TA prácticamente no cambiaron excepto en las muestras tratadas con altas temperaturas. DFRSA tuvo correlación con TPC durante el tratamiento con ultrasonido. La aplicación de análisis de componentes principales a los datos experimentales sugirió que el tiempo de exposición era el factor con mayor habilidad para inducir cambios en el vino.     An investigation into feature effectiveness for multimedia hyperlinking

    The increasing amount of archival multimedia content available online is creating increasing opportunities for users who are interested in exploratory search behaviour such as browsing. The user experience with online collections could therefore be improved by enabling navigation and recommendation within multimedia archives, which can be supported by allowing a user to follow a set of hyperlinks created within or across documents. The main goal of this study is to compare the performance of dierent multimedia features for automatic hyperlink generation. In our work we construct multimedia hyperlinks by indexing and searching textual and visual features extracted from the blip.tv dataset. A user-driven evaluation strategy is then proposed by applying the Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) crowdsourcing platform, since we believe that AMT workers represent a good example of "real world" users. We conclude that textual features exhibit better performance than visual features for multimedia hyperlink construction. In general, a combination of ASR transcripts and metadata provides the best results

    Sensitive observations at 1.4 and 250 GHz of z > 5 QSOs

    We present 1.4 and 5 GHz observations taken with the Very Large Array (VLA), and observations at 250 GHz obtained with the Max-Planck millimeter bolometer (MAMBO) at the IRAM 30~m telescope, of ten optically selected Quasi-stellar Objects (QSOs) at 5.0 < z < 6.28. Four sources are detected at 1.4 GHz two of which are radio loud and are also detected at 5 GHz. These results are roughly consistent with there being no evolution of the radio-loud QSO fraction out to z~6. Three sources have been detected at 250 GHz or 350 GHz at much higher levels than their 1.4 GHz flux densities suggesting that the observed mm emission is likely thermal emission from warm dust, although more exotic possibilities cannot be precluded. The highest redshift source in our sample (J1030+0524 at z=6.28) is not detected at 1.4 or 250 GHz, but four fairly bright radio sources (flux density at 1.4GHz > 0.2 mJy) are detected in a 2' field centered on the QSO, including an edge-brightened ('FRII') double radio source with an extent of about 1'. A similar over-density of radio sources is seen in the field of the highest redshift QSO J1148+5251. We speculate that these over-densities of radio sources may indicate clusters along the lines-of-sight, in which case gravitational lensing by the cluster could magnify the QSO emission by a factor 2 or so without giving rise to arcsecond-scale distortions in the optical images of the QSOs.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures. accepted by A
