    Split Households, Family Migration and Urban Settlement: Findings from China’s 2015 National Floating Population Survey

    For decades, China’s rural migrants have split their households between their rural origins and urban work locations. While the hukou system continues to be a barrier to urban settlement, research has also underscored split households as a migrant strategy that spans the rural and urban boundary, questioning if sustained migration will eventually result in permanent urban settlement. Common split-household arrangements include sole migration, where the spouse and children are left behind, and couple migration, where both spouses are migrants, leaving behind their children. More recently, nuclear family migration involving both the spouse and children has been on the rise. Based on a 2015 nationally representative “floating population” survey, this article compares sole migrants, couple migrants, and family migrants in order to examine which migrants choose which household arrangements, including whether specific household arrangements are more associated with settlement intention than others. Our analysis also reveals differences between work-related migrants and family-related migrants. The findings highlight demographic, gender, economic, employment, and destination differences among the different types of migrant household arrangements, pointing to family migration as a likely indicator of permanent settlement. The increase of family migration over time signals to urban governments an increased urgency to address their needs as not only temporary dwellers but more permanent residents

    Left Behind? Migration Stories of Two Women in Rural China

    Women being left behind in the countryside by husbands who migrate to work has been a common phenomenon in China. On the other hand, over time, rural women’s participation in migration has increased precipitously, many doing so after their children are older, and those of a younger generation tend to start migrant work soon after finishing school. Although these women may no longer be left behind physically, their work, mobility, circularity, and frequency of return continue to be governed by deep-rooted gender ideology that defines their role primarily as caregivers. Through the biographical stories of two rural women in Anhui, this article shows that traditional gender norms persist across generations. Yingyue is of an older generation and provided care to her husband, children, and later grandchildren when she was left behind, when she participated in migration, and when she returned to her village. Shuang is 30 years younger and aspires to urban lifestyle such as living in apartments and using daycare for her young children. Yet, like Yingyue, Shuang’s priority is caregiving. Her decisions, which are in tandem with her parents-in-law, highlight how Chinese families stick together as a safety net. Her desire to earn wages, an activity much constrained by her caregiving responsibility to two young children, illustrates a strong connection between income-generation ability and identity among women of the younger generation. These two stories underscore the importance of examining how women are left behind not only physically but in their access to opportunities such as education and income-generating activity

    A Population-Based Surveillance Study of Shared Genotypes of Escherichia coli Isolates from Retail Meat and Suspected Cases of Urinary Tract Infections.

    There is increasing evidence that retail food may serve as a source of Escherichia coli that causes community-acquired urinary tract infections, but the impact of this source in a community is not known. We conducted a prospective, population-based study in one community to examine the frequency of recovery of uropathogenic E. coli genotypes from retail meat samples. We analyzed E. coli isolates from consecutively collected urine samples of patients suspected to have urinary tract infections (UTIs) at a university-affiliated health service and retail meat samples from the same geographic region. We genotyped all E. coli isolates by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and tested them for antimicrobial susceptibility. From 2016 to 2017, we cultured 233 E. coli isolates from 230 (21%) of 1,087 urine samples and 177 E. coli isolates from 120 (28%) of 427 retail meat samples. Urine samples contained 61 sequence types (STs), and meat samples had 95 STs; 12 STs (ST10, ST38, ST69, ST80, ST88, ST101, ST117, ST131, ST569, ST906, ST1844, and ST2562) were common to both. Thirty-five (81%) of 43 meat isolates among the 12 STs were from poultry. Among 94 isolates in the 12 STs, 26 (60%) of 43 retail meat isolates and 15 (29%) of 51 human isolates were pan-susceptible (P < 0.005). We found that 21% of E. coli isolates from suspected cases of UTIs belonged to STs found in poultry. Poultry may serve as a possible reservoir of uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). Additional studies are needed to demonstrate transmission pathways of these UPEC genotypes and their food sources.IMPORTANCE Community-acquired urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli is one of the most common infectious diseases in the United States, affecting approximately seven million women and costing approximately 11.6 billion dollars annually. In addition, antibiotic resistance among E. coli bacteria causing urinary tract infection continues to increase, which greatly complicates treatment. Identifying sources of uropathogenic E. coli and implementing prevention measures are essential. However, the reservoirs of uropathogenic E. coli have not been well defined. This study demonstrated that poultry sold in retail stores may serve as one possible source of uropathogenic E. coli This finding adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests that urinary tract infection may be a food-borne disease. More research in this area can lead to the development of preventive strategies to control this common and costly infectious disease

    Research on Teaching Satisfaction under the Application of Social Media Tools from the Perspective of Multiple Incentives

    Education big data has risen to China's national strategy, and the construction of education big data has ushered in major historical development opportunities (Zhang Wei, 2017). Social media, as the collector of the most micro-level education big data, supports the entire data ecology. Social media-based mixed teaching is changing the traditional classroom, but we still know very little about the current status of social media teaching, especially the internal and external environment of social media teaching for college teachers. In this study, a questionnaire survey was used to systematically investigate the satisfaction of college students with mixed teaching based on social media. The study found that in the mixed teaching process, teachers can have an impact on teaching results through multiple incentive modes; among them, spiritual and interactive incentives can have a significant impact on teaching satisfaction; this will provide a useful reference for college social media teaching. Promoting the transformation of the role of teachers in colleges and universities helps to promote the high development of education

    DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTI-DOSE FORMULATION FOR PREVNAR 13™

    Streptococcus pneumoniae causes up to a million cases per year of invasive disease in young children and infants, most occurring in developing countries. Pfizer is partnering with WHO and the GAVI alliance to support the developing world on immunization against pneumococcal disease. Prevnar 13™ is currently approved for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease in twenty seven countries. If used widely, this pneumococcal conjugate vaccine could prevent hundreds of thousands of additional cases of child mortality each year. Use of single-dose preservative-free vaccine formulations will raise the overall cost of vaccination programs and may jeopardize the effectiveness of immunization programs in developing countries. Multi-dose vials lower the cost for each vaccination but typically need to include a preservative to prevent contamination that might be introduced during the withdrawal of vaccine doses from such vials. To develop a multi-dose formulation of Prevnar 13™ for the developing world, a preservative effective in meeting antimicrobial efficacy test requirements, that would maintain vaccine stability, and have an established safety record in infants was required. Multiple preservatives which include phenol, 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE), meta-cresol, methylparaben and propyl paraben and thimerosal (as a control) were evaluated as potential candidates for a multi-dose formulation of Prevenar 13 based on preservative effectiveness and product stability. 2-PE showed superior antimicrobial effectiveness in Prevnar 13 formulations as per European Pharmacopoeia (EP) requirements and in multiple challenge studies with various organisms, as per WHO Open Vial Policy, to mimic worst case inadvertent microbial contamination that might occur during immunization of subjects when the formulation is presented in multi-dose vials. Prevnar 13 in the presence of 5mg dose of 2-PE is stable for over two years and meets the preservative effectiveness standards based on the EP 5.1.3 as well as WHO multi-organism challenge test. The data support the use of 2-PE as a more effective preservative with the potential to replace thimerosal, the most commonly used preservative in multi-dose vaccine formulations

    Prognostic Value of Estimated Functional Capacity Incremental to Cardiac Biomarkers in Stable Cardiac Patients

    Background: Few studies have investigated functional capacity self-assessment tools in either prediction of future major adverse cardiac outcomes beyond all-cause mortality or direct comparisons with clinically available biomarkers. Methods and Results: We estimated functional capacity using the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) questionnaire in 8987 sequential stable patients without acute coronary syndrome who were undergoing elective diagnostic coronary angiography with 3-year follow-up of major adverse cardiac events (death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke). A low DASI score provided independent prediction of a 4.8-fold increase in future risk of incident major adverse cardiac events at 3 years (quartiles 1 versus 4 hazard ratio [95% CI] 4.76 [4.03 to 5.61], P\u3c0.001), and a 3.8-fold increased risk after adjusting for traditional risk factors (3.77 [3.15 to 4.51], P\u3c0.001). The prognostic value of the DASI score was evident in both primary and secondary prevention cohorts, with and without heart failure, as well as high and low C-reactive protein and B-type natriuretic peptide levels. The DASI score reclassified 15% of patients (P\u3c0.001) beyond traditional risk factors in predicting future MACE. Conclusion: A simple self-assessment tool of functional capacity in stable patients undergoing elective diagnostic cardiac evaluation provides independent and incremental prognostic value for prediction of both significant coronary angiographic disease and long-term adverse clinical events

    Characterizing Enterovirus 71 and Coxsackievirus A16 Virus-like Particles Production in Insect Cells

    Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) are two viruses commonly responsible for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. The lack of prophylactic or therapeutic measures against HFMD is a major public health concern. Insect cell-based EV71 and CVA16 virus-like particles (VLPs) are promising vaccine candidates against HFMD and are currently under development. In this paper, the influence of insect cell line, incubation temperature, and serial passaging effect and stability of budded virus (BV) stocks on EV71 and CVA16 VLP production was investigated. Enhanced EV71 and CVA16 VLP production was observed in Sf9 cells compared to High Five (TM) cells. Lowering the incubation temperature from the standard 27 degrees C to 21 degrees C increased the production of both VLPs in Sf9 cells. Serial passaging of CVA16 BV stocks in cell culture had a detrimental effect on the productivity of the structural proteins and the effect was observed with only 5 passages of BV stocks. A 2.7x higher production yield was achieved with EV71 compared to CVA16. High-resolution asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation couple with multi-angle light scattering (AF4-MALS) was used for the first time to characterize EV71 and CVA16 VLPs, displaying an average root mean square radius of 15 +/- 1 nm and 15.3 +/- 5.8 nm respectively.
