Atypical Presentation of Cytomegalovirus-Related Infantile Nephrotic Syndrome

    Get PDF
Nephrotic syndrome is the most common glomerular disease in children. Most cases are idiopathic and the first episode is rarely related to cytomegalovirus infection, particularly after 3 months of age. We present a 7-month-old infant who developed atypical presentation of nephrotic syndrome secondary to cytomegalovirus infection. The patient was referred to undergo orchipexy due to right-sided undescended testis. Following the surgery, he developed fever, gastroenteritis and renal failure. A few days later, generalized edema and proteinuria were detected. Due to positive test results for cytomegalovirus, ganciclovir was administered. Remission of nephrotic syndrome was obtained within the first two weeks of the treatment. No relapse of nephrotic syndrome was detected during 12 months of follow up. We may conclude that in unexplained infantile nephrotic syndrome, CMV should be considered as one of the possible etiologies. Keywords: Nephrotic Syndrome; Cytomegalovirus; Infant; Ganciclovir; Edema; Proteinuria; Gastroenteritis

Solitary Crossed Renal Ectopia with Vesicoureteral Reflux

Solitary crossed renal ectopia is a rare anomaly of the urinary tract. This anomaly is often diagnosed incidentally when patients are being evaluated for other associated findings including genitourinary, cardiovascular, hematological or vertebral abnormalities. We report a boy with solitary crossed renal ectopia that was considered a solitary normal positioning kidney by ultrasonography and dimercaptosuccinic acid scan.  However, voiding cystourethrogram revealed vesicoureteral reflux and crossed ectopia. Therefore, in any normal appearing solitary kidney, crossed ectopia may be a possible finding. Keywords: EctopicKidney; Vesico-Ureteral Reflux; Ureter.

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic condition that warrants further empirical investigation. The aim of this research was investigated prediction of BPD symptomatology relay on recent life experience. Method and Materials: Data for the current study was collected from students of Shiraz university. Sample consisted of 120 undergraduate students. The ages of the sample ranged from 18-26 with an average age of 19.55. Forty-four participants were men (36.6%) and fifty-six participants were women (46.6%). Instruments were used in this study include: Inventory of College Students’ Recent Life Experience (ICSRLE; Kohn, Lafreniere, & Gurevich, 1990) and Five-Factor Borderline Personality Inventory (FFBI; Mullins-Sweatt et al., 2012). Results: revealed non-significant effects for gender on total borderline personality scores, five subscales of FFBI and negative life events. Also these results showed negative life events predicted borderline personality traits. Conclusion: Negative life events could predict borderline personality traits

The study aims to investigate the effect of incorporation of sepiolite nanoparticles on the microtensile bond strength of an experimental dentin bonding to the human dentin. The sepiolite nanoparticles were incorporated into an experimental methacrylate-based dentin bonding system in concentrations of 0.0, 0.2, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 weight percents. The specimens were then ultrasonicated to finely disperse the nanoparticles in the adhesive matrix. The coronal enamel of 30 intact human premolars was cut to expose dentin. Having etched, rinsed, and blot dried the experimental bonding agents were applied to dentin surface. Adper Single Bond was used as control group according to the manufactor?s instruction. Then all the teeth were built up by composite and sectioned in stick form for microtensile test. The fracture surface was observed using SEM. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey?s post-Hoc test. The results indicated that the incorporation of the nanofiller, improved the bond strength to dentin with the highest values obtained at 1 w% sepiolite nanoparticle content. Sepiolite nanoparticles can be considered as novel fillers to improve the mechanical properties of dentin bonding agents

Insecta, Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eurytomidae and Torymidae in Iran

    Get PDF
A taxonomic checklist of 43 species of Eurytomidae belonging to seven genera, and 41 species ofTorymidae belonging to 15 genera, are currently recognized as occurring in Iran. Based mostly on various faunisticsurvey reports; no eurytomid or torymid species with collection records from Iran have previously been listed. Therefore; we did not intend to confirm identifications of previous studies, except in very obvious cases. A morecomprehensive collection-based study is needed to confirm the actual Iranian occurrence of each species listed in thischecklist

Effect of rinsing time and surface contamination on the bond strength of silorane-based and dimethacrylate-based composites to enamel

The aim of this study was to assess whether saliva contamination and rinsing time for 15, 30, and 60 seconds, affects the shear bond strength of silorane and methacrylate-based composites to enamel. Two light cure resin, P60 (3M ESPE) and Filtek LS Silorane were tested. 120 sound premolars were randomly divided into four groups of 30 teeth based on composite type with or without saliva contamination after etching and rinsing. Each group was further divided into three subgroups according to their rinsing time. Then a cylinder of the composite was bonded to the enamel and Shear bond strength was assessed. To determine the failure mode, the bonded surfaces were then observed under SEM. In addition, the DC of each group was measured at pH levels of 4 and 7 using FTIR spectroscopy. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc analysis followed by Fisher?s least significant difference. The bond strength of the non-contaminated methacrylate group was significantly higher than the other groups (p< 0.0001). In addition, there was no significant deference between the methacrylate subgroups. In the silorane groups, the shear bond strength was higher in the rinsing time of 15 seconds. Failure pattern was mainly adhesive. The DC of the Methacrylates had no significant difference at pH 4 and pH 7, but was significantly higher than that of siloranes (p< 0.0001). While the DC of the siloranes at pH 4 was significantly higher than at pH 7 (p< 0.0001). Saliva contamination in both composites reduces bond strength. Increasing rinsing time in Methacrylates proves ineffective. In non-contaminated siloranes, excessive rinsing time reduced bond strength. The best-recommended rinsing time for both composite is 15 seconds

Background: This study was conducted to investigate the relation between risk factors related to lifestyle and coronary artery disease (CAD) in residents of Yazd province. Methods: In this hospital-based case-control study performed in Yazd province, 250 patients with CAD were compared with 250 controls matched for age and sex. Data were collected by using a researcher- made questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Chi-square and Conditional Multiple Logistic Regression and through SPSS16. Results: History of Consumption of less than three servings of fruit in week, with an odds ratio of 8.4 (95%CI: 1.56-45.18) and more than three times egg in week with an odds ratio of 4.05 (95%CI: 1.13-14.5, P=0.03) increased the chance of getting CAD. However, no significant relationship was found for history of consumption of oil, dairy, red meat, fried foods and fast foods. The number of daily smoked cigarettes was the only non-nutritional factor that showed significant relationship with CAD (P=0.01). Conclusion: Overall, insufficient intake of fruits, high consumption of egg and the number of cigarettes smoked daily were identified as the most important life style-related risk factors for getting CAD. Therefore, measures for decreasing these risk factors in Yazd Province are necessary
