Naked eye star visibility and limiting magnitude mapped from DMSP-OLS satellite data
We extend the method introduced by Cinzano et al. (2000a) to map the
artificial sky brightness in large territories from DMSP satellite data, in
order to map the naked eye star visibility and telescopic limiting magnitudes.
For these purposes we take into account the altitude of each land area from
GTOPO30 world elevation data, the natural sky brightness in the chosen sky
direction, based on Garstang modelling, the eye capability with naked eye or a
telescope, based on the Schaefer (1990) and Garstang (2000b) approach, and the
stellar extinction in the visual photometric band. For near zenith sky
directions we also take into account screening by terrain elevation. Maps of
naked eye star visibility and telescopic limiting magnitudes are useful to
quantify the capability of the population to perceive our Universe, to evaluate
the future evolution, to make cross correlations with statistical parameters
and to recognize areas where astronomical observations or popularisation can
still acceptably be made. We present, as an application, maps of naked eye star
visibility and total sky brightness in V band in Europe at the zenith with a

Tiles from Aosta: A Peculiar Glaze Roof Covering
The 18th century roof tiles from the “Casa delle vigne”, located in the Aosta region (north-east Italy), were investigated as an example of a peculiar historical roof covering: ceramic tiles with a lead-based glaze finishing to waterproof them are used to create colourful patterns. A conservation project proposed the integration of the original tiles with new ones, produced according to traditional methods. Ancient and new tiles were analysed with Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy, micro-Raman, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry for understanding the composition and the production technology of this manufacture. Their resistance to freezing and thawing cycles was then tested, considering their exposure in the severe alpine climate of Aosta. The use of pure clays with low calcium contents, high firing temperature and lead-rich glazes was found in ancient tiles, able to outstand several freezing-thawing cycles without damages. Iron and copper pigments were used in old yellow and green glazes. Zinc-based pigment, low lead and calcium-rich glazes are used in the new ones, which remained mainly coherent to the ceramic body during the freeze-thaw test
A call for scientists to halt the spoiling of the night sky with artificial light and satellites
Unfettered access to dark night skies is rapidly diminishing, due to light
pollution and satellite mega-constellations tracks. Scientists should wake up
and do more to stand up to Big Light and Big Space and preserve this natural

Night sky brightness at sites from DMSP-OLS satellite measurements
We apply the sky brightness modelling technique introduced and developed by
Roy Garstang to high-resolution DMSP-OLS satellite measurements of upward
artificial light flux and to GTOPO30 digital elevation data in order to predict
the brightness distribution of the night sky at a given site in the primary
astronomical photometric bands for a range of atmospheric aerosol contents.
This method, based on global data and accounting for elevation, Earth curvature
and mountain screening, allows the evaluation of sky glow conditions over the
entire sky for any site in the World, to evaluate its evolution, to disentangle
the contribution of individual sources in the surrounding territory, and to
identify main contributing sources. Sky brightness, naked eye stellar
visibility and telescope limiting magnitude are produced as 3-dimensional
arrays whose axes are the position on the sky and the atmospheric clarity. We

RHESSI images and spectra of two small flares
We studied the evolution of two small flares (GOES class C2 and C1) that
developed in the same active region with different morphological
characteristics: one is extended and the other is compact. We analyzed the
accuracy and the consistency of different algorithms implemented in RHESSI
software to reconstruct the image of the emitting sources, for energies between
3 and 12 keV. We found that all tested algorithms give consistent results for
the peak position whil the other parameters can differ at most by a factor 2.
Pixon and Forward-fit generally converge to similar results but Pixon is more
reliable for reconstructing a complex source. We investigated the spectral
characteristics of the two flares during their evolution in the 3--25 keV
energy band. We found that a single thermal model of the photon spectrum is
inadequate to fit the observations and we needed to add either a non-thermal
model or a hot thermal one.The non-thermal and the double thermal fits are
comparable. If we assume a non-thermal model, the non-thermal energy is always
higher than the thermal one.Only during the very final decay phase a single
