    Genetic confirmation of the first Mediterranean record of Holacanthus africanus Cadenat, 1951

    The first Mediterranean record of the pomacanthid Holacanthus africanus, caught within the Maltese waters, was assigned based on morphological and meristic characters. However, molecular and genetic analyses are required to confirm the taxonomic determination and avoid misidentification given the abundance of closely-related Pomacanthidae species and the biogeographic significance of this record for the Mediterranean. At the species level, the analyzed specimens gave a 99.7% identity match with H. africanus. This study represents yet another example of molecular analyses supplementing the conclusions of conventional morphological identification exercises.peer-reviewe

    New records of the silver-cheeked toadfish Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) in the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas: early detection and participatory monitoring in practice

    5 pages, 3 figuresThe silver-cheeked toadfish Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789)—an invasive toxic species well established in the eastern Mediterranean—is rapidly expanding through the western Basin and a public campaign was set to inform Italian citizens on the risks associated with its consumption. Both news media and local communities responded rapidly to the initiative generating an increasing flow of information. On 15 April 2016, a new capture of this species (off Briatico, Calabria, Italy at 25 m of depth), was promptly reported to the authors, representing the first documented record of L. sceleratus from the Tyrrhenian Sea. On 7 June 2016, a second specimen was captured at Montebello Ionico in Calabria.     The first documented record of the Guinea angelfish, Holacanthus africanus, for the Mediterranean is hereby reported, through the capture of two individuals within Maltese coastal waters. The fish were submitted as a contribution to the Spot the Alien Fish citizen science campaign. Considerations are made on the possible introduction pathway used by the species to reach these waters, including the aquarium trade or association with a towed oil platform.peer-reviewe

    Assessing worth of marine protected areas for the protection of threatened biodiversity using IUCN Red List and Red List Index. A pilot study in six mediterranean areas

    Abstract The Mediterranean marine region is considered one of the world's biodiversity hotspots for conservation priorities due the high occurrence of rare and threatened species, endemism and high species richness. However, several pressure such as losses and alterations of habitats are ongoing and in order to increase conservation in this sea region, many marine protected areas were established, including Natura 2000 sites. The latter are areas designated under the Habitat and Bird Directives for the conservation of species in need of strict protection, so that they can reach a favourable conservation status. Species conservation status is also assessed through the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species. The aim of our study was to test whether IUCN Red List and the related Red List Index RLI (which aggregates in a single value all the information on conservation status of a particular set of species) can be used as a metrics to characterize MPAs, and orienting, consequently, local marine conservation policies. A pilot study was undertaken in the six Sicilian MPAs (Marine Protected Areas) and results highlighted that Egadi Island has a low RLI value (meaning that the MPA hosts many species with a threatened status) while the Capo Gallo MPA, at the opposite, as an high RLI value (i.e.less threatened species); the other four MPAs. Egadi, Pelagie, and Ustica showed similar distribution frequencies of Red List categories having similar RLI values. Biological resource use, natural system modifications, invasive species, and pollution all account for 90% of assessed threats. Outcomes of our study showed that IUCN indicators should be considered as a tool to: assess the conservation status of set of species in protected areas; drive prioritization in the decision process in order to support an effective management conservation plan; designate new MPAs

    The occurrence of the silver-cheeked toadfish, Lagocephalus sceleratus, is reported for the first time from Maltese waters. The specimen was caught at a depth of 15 m in a sparse sea grass Posidonia oceanica meadow. The need for a public information campaign on the danger to human health posed by the species, and to develop an early warning system of its spread, is discussed.peer-reviewe

    The Sicily Strait : a transnational observatory for monitoring the advance of non indigenous species

    The Strait of Sicily is a major hydrodynamic, biogeographical and geological transition zone within the Mediterranean Sea, considered as the boundary between the Western and Eastern sub- basins. During the last few decades, an increasing number of marine species native of either the Atlantic or the Indo-Pacific Oceans have been recorded in this area by researchers from Malta, Italy and Tunisia. Here we list recently recorded fish from the Strait of Sicily, illustrating suitable methodologies for their detection, and advocating the need of transnational monitoring networks.peer-reviewe

    Public feedback on early warning initiatives undertaken for hazardous non-indigenous species : the case of Lagocephalus sceleratus from Italian and Maltese waters

    The expansion of invasive non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean is generating an increasing concern about biodiversity protection and human health, with European countries being solicited to apply early warning measures in such circumstances. The recent expansion of the hazardous fish Lagocephalus sceleratus in the Straits of Sicily, the subsequent actions adopted to manage the risk and the feedback received from the public are herein presented, as an example of the interaction between experts and the public in promoting scientific citizenship through an ad hoc action. A rapid increase in media reports related to L. sceleratus had been registered after the launch of the early warning campaign as part of a scientific and health risk communication strategy, and seven new records of this species have emerged shortly after. This study represents a useful contribution to the further bridging of the science-policy gap.peer-reviewe

    Elucidating food webs in infralitoral rocky coastal habitats invaded by Caulerpa cylindracea (Sonder 1845)

    Invasive species including Caulerpa cylindracea affect coastal benthic communities inducing structural changes. To assess effects in rocky ecosystems, food webs have been depicted based on stable isotopic data collected from invertebrates and fishes at invaded and non-invaded coastal areas. Isotopic values of invertebrates were slightly higher in invaded than non-invaded habitats of Lampedusa Island, however no significant differences were found. Invasive fish Siganus luridus and native Sparisoma cretense had similar isotopic signatures indicating similar food sources

    Using local ecological knowledge to search for non-native species in Natura 2000 sites in the central Mediterranean sea : an approach to identify new arrivals and hotspot areas

    The management of biological invasions is among the most urgent of global challenges and requires a significant monitoring effort to obtain the information needed to take the appropriate decisions. To complement standard monitoring, citizen science is increasingly being used. Within citizen science, the approach of collecting and investigating Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) proved to be useful in the monitoring of non-native species. A LEK survey was carried out in 10 Sicilian and Maltese Natura 2000 sites in order to help in the early detection of non-native species. The survey was addressed to local fishers and SCUBA divers in order to investigate the occurrence of 24 selected marine non-native species and to identify potential hotspot areas of invasion through the use of six indicators: the occurrence of newly introduced nonindigenous species, the cumulative impacts of invasive alien species (CIMPAL) and the relative importance of species on the cumulative impacts (D1, D2, D3, and D4). The respondents confirmed the presence of 22 species since the year 2000 and reported 10 new ones registered in the investigated areas. The highest CIMPAL value was observed in two Sicilian Natura 2000 sites (ITA090028 and ITA040014) and the lowest on the western coast of Malta (MT0000101, MT0000102, MT0000103, and MT0000104) The four top-priority species according to indicators D1–D4 were Caulerpa cylindracea, C. taxifolia, Siganus luridus and S. rivulatus. The study produced a valid and useful scientific output to suggest and address management strategies to monitor the establishment of the non-native species.peer-reviewe
