Norms for an Isometric Muscle Endurance Test
Musculoskeletal performance assessment is critical in the analysis of physical training programs in order to prioritize goals for decreasing injury risk and focusing performance goals. Abdominal endurance as part of this analysis is often assessed with techniques that have validity that has been debated in literature. The purpose of this study was to develop normative sex- and athlete-specific percentiles for a trunk stabilization and muscular endurance by using a prone forearm plank test in college-aged students. A second purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of habitual physical activity and the reason for test termination. There were 471 participants (means SE; males: n = 194, age 20.4 0.2 years, body height 179.4 0.5 cm, body mass 81.1 1.2 kg; females: n = 277, age 20.2 0.2 years, body height 165.7 0.4 cm, body mass 63.9 0.7 kg) who performed this test to volitional or technique failure. Males produced significantly higher test durations than females (means SD; 124 72 seconds vs. 83 63 seconds) and athletes produced significantly longer test durations than non-athletes (123 69 s vs. 83 63 s) but no interaction effects were seen in the variables of sex and athletic status. The activity level was found to have a threshold of influence (\u3e3 times/week) on abdominal endurance that is dose-specific where greater than 5 times/week showed the greatest influence. The fatigue of the abdominals was the termination reason producing the lowest test duration and there was no sex effect on reason for test termination. These normative percentiles for abdominal endurance suggest that the abdominal plank test can now be used as an alternative to other abdominal assessments in college students, but further investigation is warranted prior to confirmation and generalization to other populations
Biotechnology product development, biosafety regulation and environmental risk assessment in the Philippines
This study looks at the current biotechnology and biosafety situation in the Philippines. It assesses whether the country's biotechnology organizations are in a position to effectively perform biosafety regulation, protect intellectual property rights and respond to the accelerating pace of international biotechnology product development. Based on a mixture of primary and secondary information, the study finds that biotechnology development is constrained by funding and resources. It also finds that, while biosafety guidelines and practices are relatively strong, there are a number of institutional weaknesses. The study recommends measures to make biotechnology research and development more cost-effective and to improve biosafety in the country. Overall, the report calls for the Philippines to carefully balance the need for biotechnology regulation with the need for innovative biotechnology development
Joint Survey Processing I: Compact oddballs in the COSMOS field -- low-luminosity Quasars at z > 6?
The faint-end slope of the quasar luminosity function at z~6 and its implication on the role of quasars in reionizing the intergalactic medium at early times has been an outstanding problem for some time. The identification of faint high-redshift quasars with luminosities of 25mag, with ~30% of sources having their flux contaminated by foreground objects when the seeing resolution is ~0.7". We mitigate these issues by performing a pixel-level joint processing of ground and space-based data from Subaru/HSC and HST/ACS. We create a deconfused catalog over the 1.64 deg² of the COSMOS field, after accounting for spatial varying PSFs and astrometric differences between the two datasets. We identify twelve low-luminosity (M_(UV) ~ -21 mag) z>6 quasar candidates through (i) their red color measured between ACS/F814W and HSC/i-band and (ii) their compactness in the space-based data. We estimate that late-type stars could contribute up to 50% to our sample. Our constraints on the faint end of the quasar luminosity function at z~6.4 suggests a negligibly small contribution to reionization compared to the star-forming galaxy population. The confirmation of our candidates and the evolution of number density with redshift could provide better insights into how supermassive galaxies grew in the first billion years of cosmic time
The AllWISE Motion Survey and the Quest for Cold Subdwarfs
The AllWISE processing pipeline has measured motions for all objects detected on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) images taken between 2010 January and 2011 February. In this paper, we discuss new capabilities made to the software pipeline in order to make motion measurements possible, and we characterize the resulting data products for use by future researchers. Using a stringent set of selection criteria, we find 22,445 objects that have significant AllWISE motions, of which 3525 have motions that can be independently confirmed from earlier Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) images, yet lack any published motions in SIMBAD. Another 58 sources lack 2MASS counterparts and are presented as motion candidates only. Limited spectroscopic follow-up of this list has already revealed eight new L subdwarfs. These may provide the first hints of a “subdwarf gap” at mid-L types that would indicate the break between the stellar and substellar populations at low metallicities (i.e., old ages). Another object in the motion list--WISEA J154045.67-510139.3--is a bright (J ≈ 9 mag) object of type M6; both the spectrophotometric distance and a crude preliminary parallax place it ~6 pc from the Sun. We also compare our list of motion objects to the recently published list of 762 WISE motion objects from Luhman. While these first large motion studies with WISE data have been very successful in revealing previously overlooked nearby dwarfs, both studies missed objects that the other found, demonstrating that many other nearby objects likely await discovery in the AllWISE data products
Alternative p38MAPKs as biomarkers in the interplay of colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases
Trabajo presentado en el 44º Congreso Nacional de la Sociedad Española de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular (SEBBM), celebrado en Málaga (España) del 06 al 09 de septiembre de 2022.Chronic inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a risk factor for Colorectal cancer (CRC) development, but our understanding of this interplay at a molecular level is still limited. p38γ and p38δ, are central in the development of mouse colitis-associated CRC (CAC) by modulating the inflammatory immune response. However, their implication in human CRC and IBD is not well defined. In this study we perform an integrative analysis of p38γ and p38δ mRNA and
protein expression and activation in human patients; using human CRC derived organoids and plasma samples, as well as data from different human CRC and IBD mRNA databases. We found that, p38δ levels were decreased, whereas p38γ expression and phosphorylation were significantly increased in CRC compared to normal colon samples. This increase correlated with the expression of genes implicated in inflammation. Examine of p38γ/p38δ in IBD patients showed that p38γ mRNA and protein levels were increased in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients. Contrary, p38δ mRNA was significantly decreased. We also investigated the expression of miRNAs, miR-128-2, miR133a and miR-155, implicated in inflammation and cancer development. In mouse model of colitis and CAC, miR128-2 level was regulated by p38γ/p38δ. In the plasma of IBD and CRC patients, miR128-2 was increased compared to healthy donors, and this correlated with p38γ and p38δ levels. Our results show an opposite regulation of p38γ and p38δ in both CRC and IBD; and suggest that p38γ acts as a link between colitis and CRC by favouring an inflammatory environment that promotes tumour development. We provided evidence that p38γ/p38δ, together with miR-128-2, can be useful as biomarkers, and as potential treatment targets, for colitis and early-stage CRC

Connexin40 regulates platelet function
The presence of multiple connexins was recently demonstrated in platelets, with notable expression of Cx37. Studies with Cx37-deficient mice and connexin inhibitors established roles for hemichannels and gap junctions in platelet function. It was uncertain, however, whether Cx37 functions alone or in collaboration with other family members through heteromeric interactions in regulation of platelet function. Here we report the presence and functions of an additional platelet connexin, Cx40. Inhibition of Cx40 in human platelets or its deletion in mice reduces platelet aggregation, fibrinogen binding, granule secretion and clot retraction. The effects of the Cx37 inhibitor 37,43Gap27 on Cx40-/- mouse platelets and of the Cx40 inhibitor 40Gap27 on Cx37-/- mouse platelets revealed that each connexin is able to function independently. Inhibition or deletion of Cx40 reduces haemostatic responses in mice, indicating the physiological importance of this protein in platelets. We conclude that multiple connexins are involved in regulating platelet function, thereby contributing to haemostasis and thrombosis
Oval Domes. The Case of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia
[EN] The dome of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia is an emblematic example of Valencian baroque architecture and painting. Its shape, oval or elliptical, has been the subject of controversy in various studies. The study of oval domes throughout history is a very interesting field of research because, among other things, the determination of the exact shape is important in order to conclude how it was built. We approach the problem from a new mathematical point of view, calculating the distances between the points that make up the real data cloud and the hypothetical form considered, oval or ellipse. The use of modern graphic surveying techniques, carried out with a 3D laser scanner, and computation with the powerful symbolic and numerical mathematical solver, Mathematica, has allowed us to accurately determine the shape of the dome and determine that its sections are not well-described by ellipses. A better fit is obtained assuming that sections are ovals.
