    Soluble Human Leukocyte Antigen Molecules Detected in Orofacial Cleft Patients: A Case-Control Study

    Objective: To compare soluble HLA-C and HLA-DR molecules present in the plasma of orofacial cleft and non-orofacial cleft populations. Material and Methods: Orofacial cleft patients were recruited using an accidental sampling approach (n=15). Peripheral blood was collected from the participants and processed for Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) against HLA-C and HLA-DR with specific antibodies. The absorbance was calculated utilizing ELISA reader. Data were statistically analyzed using an independent t-test to compare the disease and control groups. Results: The levels of soluble HLA-C and HLA-DR were significantly higher in the diseased group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The role of HLA molecules in non-communicable disease and congenital anomalies, particularly orofacial cleft, remains speculative despite the positive results of this study and  those  of previous investigations. It suggests that the variables examined may affect specific pathways involved in the pathogenesis of orofacial cleft, and predispose the individuals concerned to the oral cleft

    Phylogenetic classification of the world's tropical forests

    Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world’s tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world’s tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.</p

    Latar belakang. Cleft lip and palate (CLP) merupakan kelainan orofasial dengan jumlah prevalensi tertinggi dan dapat menyebabkan maloklusi skeletal yang parah serta membutuhkan perawatan jangka panjang yang cukup lama. CLP terjadi sebagai akibat dari interaksi poligenik dan faktor lingkungan. Salah satu gen penyebab CLP ditemukan pada kromosom 6. Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) adalah salah satu gen yang paling polimorfik pada lengan pendek kromosom 6 dan ditengarai menjadi salah satu gen susceptibility terjadinya CLP. HLA-C berasal dari dari HLA Kelas I yang memiliki derajat polimorfik tinggi dan berkaitan dengan CLP. Namun, bagaimana mekanisme dan sejauh mana HLA-C dapat memengaruhi CLP masih belum jelas. Tujuan. Membandingkan kadar HLA-C pada penderita CLP dan kelompok kontrol (individu normal). Metode. Sebanyak 30 subyek penelitian dibagi atas dua kelompok, yaitu kelompok penderita CLP dan kelompok kontrol. 5cc darah tepi diambil dari vena cubiti dextra dan disentrifus untuk mendapatkan plasma darah yang kemudian dilakukan uji ELISA. Hasilnya diukur dengan luminometer pada 450nm kemudian dilakukan uji statistik menggunakan Mann-Whitney Test. Hasil. Uji ELISA plasma darah pada kelompok penderita CLP memberikan hasil rata-rata 1,950 mg/dL dan pada kelompok kontrol sebesar 2,2899. Secara signifikan kadar HLA-C pada kelompok penderita CLP lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Kesimpulan. Rendahnya kadar HLA-C pada kelompok penderita CLP menunjukkan bahwa pada penderita CLP memiliki sistem imun yang lebih rendah dan dapat terjadi akibat gen HLA-C yang mengalami polimorfisme. Sehingga, dapat mengalami kegagalan mengenali patogen

    KKN ini dilaksanakan di Dusun Paliyan Kidul, Desa Karangduwet, Kecamatan Paliyan, Kabupaten Gunung Kidul selama 31 hari dari tanggal 1 Februari 2023 sampai 3 Maret 2023. Sebelum memulai kegiatan KKN di Dusun Paliyan Kidul dilaksanakan observasi untuk mengetahui lokasi dan kondisi tempat KKN. Observasi dilakukan dengan mewawancarai Bapak Kepala Dusun yaitu Bapak Tumidi dan mendokumentasi kondisi dusun tersebut. Setelah melakukan observasi kemudian dibentuk rencana program kerja tematik dan program individu. Program kerja tematik merupakan program kerja yang dilakukan secara bersama sama dan program individu merupakan program yang dilakukan secara mandiri sesuai dengan program studi masing masing kelompok. Tujuan dari KKN ini yaitu untuk meningkatkan rasa sosialisasi kepada masyarakat
