    The Metaphors of Secondary School Teachers Towards the Concept of “Multiculturalism”

    In this research, it is aimed to reveal the perceptions which teachers from various branches and performing duty in secondary schools have, concerning the concept of multiculturalism, through metaphors. As one of the qualitative research methods, phenomenological design has been used in the research. The study group of the research is composed of 70 teachers who worked in the secondary schools located in Kastamonu Province and its districts in the academic year 2016-2017, and voluntarily accepted to participate in the research. Within the scope of the research, data has been obtained by asking teachers to complete the statement: Multiculturalism is like …; because …. The collected data has been analyzed by means of descriptive analysis. In the research, it has been concluded that teachers generally have positive perceptions related to the multiculturalism concept. Teachers consider the concept of multiculturalism mostly as a sense embracing differences and riches, with the metaphors which they have already enhanced. Besides, in the research, a negative result regarding multiculturalism as a divisive factor has been also received. As for the metaphors that the teachers have mainly developed, these are the metaphors of rainbow, forest, riches, jigsaw puzzle, food, garden, Noah’s pudding, synthesis and change

    The analysis of the relation between social studies and primary school teachers ' levels of liking of children and their job satisfaction in terms of diverse variable

    It is required for teachers to become individuals who love children, carry out their jobs with job satisfaction in order to raise individuals who are in tune with the times, effective, creative and produce suitable solutions to the challenges in the face of rapid changes that are experienced. In this research, within the scope of which the relation between social studies and primary school teachers' levels of liking of children and their job satisfaction is analyzed, The research is a descriptive study in comparative survey methods. In the research, it has been analyzed whether a statistically significant relation between social studies teachers' levels of liking of children and their job satisfaction exists or not, in terms of diverse variable. The study group of the research consists of totally 117 teachers, 57 of whom perform as social studies teachers and 60 as primary school teacher. Research data has been gathered by applying the "Barnett Liking of Children Scale" and "Job Satisfaction Scale" to the teachers participated in the research. In the analysis of data, Kruskal-Wallis H Test for independent samples, Mann-Whitney U Test for independent samples, simple correlation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk normality tests have been used. In consequence of the research, any significant difference has not been found between teachers' levels of loving children and their ages and job seniorities. It has been determined that female teachers' levels of loving children are higher as compared to that of male teachers and primary school teachers have a stronger liking for children than social studies teachers. The result that their job satisfaction does not vary according to the teachers' age, seniority and field of study and according to gender, female teachers have experienced much job satisfaction than the male ones has been reached

    Examining the political literacy levels of pre-service teachers according to some variablesÖğretmen adaylarının siyaset okuryazarlık düzeylerinin bazı değişkinlere göre incelenmesi

    The purpose of this study; is to determine the political literacy levels of pre-service teachers of social studies and to demonstrate the effects of the several variables over the components of political literacy (knowledge and understanding- dispositions and values-skills and aptitudes). Researchers use political literacy scale which have 3 components for gathering data. The sample is 1187 pre-service teachers from 7 geographical regions and this sample chosen wia maximum variation sampling. After collecting the data, researchers found that pre-service teacher’s knowledge, disposition and skills were at a medium level. When the averages of total scores that pre-service teachers obtained from three different components forming the political literacy were examined, it was seen that their political literacy levels were at a medium level. When the relationship among the components forming the political literacy, it was found that there was a positive, low level and significant relationship between knowledge and disposition; a positive high level and significant relationship between knowledge and skill; a positive, high level and significant relationship between disposition and skill. ÖzetAraştırmanın amacı, sosyal bilgiler eğitiminde öğrenim gören öğretmen adaylarının mevcut siyasi okuryazarlık düzeylerini belirlemek, siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bileşenler (bilgi- duyuşsal eğilim- davranış/beceri) üzerinde çeşitli değişkenlerin etkisini ortaya koymaktır. Bu araştırmanın örneklemini, 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılında 13 farklı üniversitenin sosyal bilgiler eğitiminin 3. ve 4. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 1187 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem seçilirken maksimum örnekleme türü kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının bilgileri, duyuşsal eğilimleri ve beceri/davranışları orta düzeyde bulunmuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bu üç ayrı bileşenden aldıkları toplam puanların ortalamasına bakıldığında ise siyaset okuryazarlık düzeylerinin orta seviyede olduğu görülmektedir. Siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bileşenler arasındaki ilişkiye bakıldığında; bilgi ile duyuşsal eğilim arasında pozitif yönde, düşük düzeyde anlamlı; bilgi ile beceri/davranış arasında pozitif yönde, yüksek düzeyde; beceri/davranış ile duyuşsal eğilim arasında pozitif yönde, yüksek düzeyde ilişki bulunmuştur

Araştırmanınçalışma grubunu 65 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracıolarak yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verileriçerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Öğretmenler tarihi dizilerden DirilişErtuğrul, Vatanım Sensin, Payitaht Abdülhamit, Mehmetçik Kut’ül Amare,Vikingler ve Aliya dizilerini izlediklerini belirtmişlerdir. Öğretmenler tarihidizi karakterlerinden etkilendiklerini ve tarihi dizilerin insanların tariheilgisini artırdığını ve tarih hakkında bilgi sahibi yaptığını düşünmektedirler.Ayrıca öğretmenler tarihi dizilerle tarihi gerçekler arasında farklar olduğu,kadın-erkek ilişkilerinin ön planda tutulduğu ve şiddet sahnelerinin bulunduğugibi olumsuz görüşler de belirtmişlerdir

    The Patriotic Attitudes of The Prospective Teachers

    The concept of patriotism can be defined as loving the homeland and making sacrifices for it. From this perspective, it can be said that the concept of patriotism has a function of uniting and integrating the people who live on the same land and gives people an understanding which is proud of its history. Patriotism is also a dynamic concept. Because it is the behavior, consciousness and understanding that we put forward in every moment of life, in every field and in all our actions. It is also the basic condition of being a good and effective citizen. With the impact of globalization and technology, while the world is rapidly becoming a big village, civil wars, migrations, economic crises, hunger, famine and confusion in various continents and countries of the world increase the need for protection of national values and reveal the importance of patriotic education. On the other hand, patriotic education is aimed to be provided to the students who will be the citizens of the future through the education programs in the schools. For this reason, determining the patriotism attitudes of the teachers who will gain the patriotism value to the students is important in determining the deficiencies and taking measures in the acquisition of this value. In this context, the aim of the study was to reveal the pre-service teachers' patriotic attitudes. In the research, screening model which is one of the quantitative research types was used. The study group of the research is composed of Social Studies, Turkish, Science, Mathematics, Primary School and Preschool teachers who are studying in the 3rd and 4th grades of a state university in the fall semester of 2019-2020 academic year. The sample type of the study was determined as purposeful sample. In the study, “Attitude Scale of Patriotism Attitude” which was developed by Schatz, Staub and Lavine (1999) and adapted into Turkish by Yazıcı (2009) was used. As a result, according to the gender of male teachers were more patriotic than famela students. According to the department variable, there is a difference between the department of social studies education and preschool education in the blind patriotism and whole scale scores, in favor of social studies education. There was no significant difference according to family income and class level

    Araştırmanın amacı, Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitiminde okuyan öğretmen adaylarının mevcut siyasi okuryazarlık düzeylerini belirlemek, siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bileşenler (bilgiduyuşsal eğilim-davranış/beceri) üzerinde çeşitli değişkenlerin etkisini ortaya koymak ve öğretmen adaylarının zihinlerindeki en iyi vatandaşlık eğitimi ve siyasi okuryazarlık aktarımını tespit etmektir. Bu araştırmanın nicel bölümünün örneklemini, 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılında 13 farklı üniversitenin Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitiminin 3. ve 4. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 1188 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın nitel bölümünün çalışma gurubunu 20 adet sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının siyaset okuryazarlık düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla kişisel bilgi formu, duyuşsal eğilimler ölçeği, davranış/beceri ölçeği ve siyaset bilgi testinden oluşan 4 bölümlük Siyaset Okuryazarlığı Anketi kullanılmıştır. Öğretmen adaylarının siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan dört ayrı bileşene göre 9 demografik değişkenin etkisi araştırılmıştır. Nitel bölümde ise öğretmen adaylarının aklında bulunan ideal vatandaşlık ve siyaset okuryazarlık eğitimi konulu yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde; Betimsel İstatistik, Kruskal Wallis H Testi, Mann-Whitney U Testi, İlişkisiz Örneklemler için t Testi, Tek Yönlü Varyans Analizi, Basit Korelasyon kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel bölümünde elde edilen bulgulara göre sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının bilgileri, duyuşsal eğilimleri ve beceri/davranışları orta düzeyde bulunmuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bu üç ayrı bileşenden aldıkları toplam puanların ortalamasına bakıldığında ise siyaset okuryazarlık düzeylerinin orta seviyede olduğu görülmektedir. Siyaset okuryazarlığını oluşturan bileşenler arasındaki ilişkiye bakıldığında; bilgi ile duyuşsal eğilim arasında pozitif yönde, düşük düzeyde anlamlı; bilgi ile beceri/davranış arasında pozitif yönde, yüksek düzeyde; beceri/davranış ile duyuşsal eğilim arasında pozitif yönde, yüksek düzeyde ilişki bulunmuştur. Araştırmanın nitel bölümünde elde edilen bulgulara göre sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adayları etkili vatandaşlık eğitimini öğretim materyallerinden, öğretim kaynaklı olmasından, öğretim ilkelerinden ve ders içeriğinden kaynaklandığını belirtmişlerdir. Bu bağlamda tüm kategoriler eşit olarak dağılmış ve hepsi birbiriyle aynı derece öneme sahiptir diyebiliriz. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adayları etkili siyaset okuryazarlığı eğitiminin öğretim materyallerine bağlı olduğunu ve öğretmen sayesinde gerçekleştiğini belirtmişlerdir. Vatandaşlık eğitiminin aileden başlayıp ömür boyu sürmesi ve siyaset okuryazarlık eğitimin ise ortaokulda başlatılması gerektiğini belirtmişlerdir.The purpose of this study is to determine the political literacy levels of pre-service teachers of social studies and to demonstrate the effects of the several variables over the components of political literacy (knowledge and understanding- dispositions and values-skills and aptitudes) and to determine pre-services teachers opinion about how can be effective citizenship education and political literacy education. This study have qualitative and quantitative part. Mixed type model conduct at this study. The study was carried out with 1188 pre-service teachers studying at the 3rd and 4th years of the Departments of Social Studies Teaching at 13 different universities in Turkey using survey model in 2014-2015 spring semester and 20 pre-service teachers studied at Gazi University in Turkey. Political Literacy Survey , which was composed of 4 parts as personal information form, disposition scale, knowledge test, skills and aptitudes scale was used in order to determine the political literacy levels of pre-service teachers of social studies. The effect of 9 demographic variables according to the four components forming the political literacy of pre-service teachers was studied. The analysis of the data was conducted using SPSS statistical software program. During the data analysis, Descriptive Statistics, t-test for Independent Samples, One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Kruskal Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test and Simple Correlation were used. According to the findings quantitative part it was found that knowledge, disposition and skills were at a medium level. When the averages of total scores that pre-service teachers obtained from three different components forming the political literacy were examined, it was seen that their political literacy levels were at a medium level.When the relationship among the components forming the political literacy, it was found that there was a positive, low level and significant relationship between knowledge and disposition; a positive high level and significant relationship between knowledge and skill; a positive, high level and significant relationship between disposition and skill. According to the findings qualitative part it was found that social studies pre-service teachers pre-service teachers stated that effective citizenship education is due to teaching materials, course content, teaching principles and schooling. In this context, all categories are equal and all of them at the same degree of importance. Social studies pre-service teachers stated that effective political literacy training due to the teacher and teaching materials. And they stated citizenship education should started from family to death and political literacy training should started from middle school

    Activities of Social Studies Teachers in Non-governmental Organizations and Perception of Volunteering

    Volunteering can be stated as activities performed for the benefit of the society regardless of the interests of the people. Such activities are of great importance for the strengthening of the social structure. In this study, the activities of social studies teachers in non-governmental organizations and the perception of volunteering were tried to be determined. In this context, the research was carried out in the phenomenology pattern, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The study group of the study consisted of 38 social studies teachers determined by purposeful sampling method. In the study, the data were collected by structured interview form and analyzed by descriptive analysis method. The results of the research: In the definition of volunteering in the study, the most repeated result is the benefit of society, benevolence, and favorable income without waiting for a financial response. It was concluded that volunteering increases solidarity and empathy and improves unity-togetherness and solidarity. In the study, the reasons for the low rate of volunteerism in Turkey unconsciousness, educational shortcoming is that prejudice and politics intertwined. It was concluded that the most needed volunteering activities should be in the fields of education, environment, children and health
