Nebular Line Emission During the Epoch of Reionization
Nebular emission lines associated with galactic HII regions carry information
about both physical properties of the ionised gas and the source of ionising
photons as well as providing the opportunity of measuring accurate redshifts
and thus distances once a cosmological model is assumed. While nebular line
emission has been extensively studied at lower redshift there are currently
only few constraints within the epoch of reionisation (EoR, ), chiefly due
to the lack of sensitive near-IR spectrographs. However, this will soon change
with the arrival of the Webb Telescope providing sensitive near-IR spectroscopy
covering the rest-frame UV and optical emission of galaxies in the EoR. In
anticipation of Webb we combine the large cosmological hydrodynamical
simulation Bluetides with photoionisation modelling to predict the nebular
emission line properties of galaxies at . We find good agreement
with the, albeit limited, existing direct and indirect observational
constraints on equivalent widths though poorer agreement with luminosity

A coherent triggered search for single spin compact binary coalescences in gravitational wave data
In this paper we present a method for conducting a coherent search for single
spin compact binary coalescences in gravitational wave data and compare this
search to the existing coincidence method for single spin searches. We propose
a method to characterize the regions of the parameter space where the single
spin search, both coincident and coherent, will increase detection efficiency
over the existing non-precessing search. We also show example results of the
coherent search on a stretch of data from LIGO's fourth science run but note
that a set of signal based vetoes will be needed before this search can be run

Viscosity effects on sand flow regimes and transport velocity in horizontal pipelines
Solids transport in multiphase systems is one of the issues under the umbrella of ‘‘flow assurance.’ But unlike issues such as waxes and hydrates, solids transport has received relatively little interest to date. The overall aim of this research was to investigate the fluid viscosity effects on sand particle transport characteristics in pipelines. Investigations were conducted using a 3-inch test facility for oil and a 4- inch flow loop for water and CMC experiments. Three oil viscosities were used including 105 cP, 200 cP and 340 cP. The sand used had a density of 2650 kg/m3 and a median diameter of 0.2 mm. The sand loadings were 50 lb/1000 bbl and 200lb/1000bbl. Based on the King et al (2000) sand minimum transport condition definition, the sand transport velocity for water, CMC solutions and oil (105 cP, 200 cP and 340 cP) were determined by visual observation and camera. The observed sand/oil flow regimes were compared. For oil/sand tests, it was observed that the dominant regime when approaching the critical sand transport velocity was the sliding sand bed, sand dunes were notably absent. However, for water and 7 cP CMC solution, sand dunes and sliding sand bed regimes were observed when approaching the sand transport velocity. For 20cP CMC solution, it was observed that the sand particles in the region between the main dunes were very active compared to those within the dunes
Horizon energy and angular momentum from a Hamiltonian perspective
Classical black holes and event horizons are highly non-local objects,
defined in terms of the causal past of future null infinity. Alternative,
(quasi)local definitions are often used in mathematical, quantum, and numerical
relativity. These include apparent, trapping, isolated, and dynamical horizons,
all of which are closely associated to two-surfaces of zero outward null
expansion. In this paper we show that three-surfaces which can be foliated with
such two-surfaces are suitable boundaries in both a quasilocal action and a
phase space formulation of general relativity. The resulting formalism provides
expressions for the quasilocal energy and angular momentum associated with the
horizon. The values of the energy and angular momentum are in agreement with

Networks of gravitational wave detectors and three figures of merit
This paper develops a general framework for studying the effectiveness of
networks of interferometric gravitational wave detectors and then uses it to
show that enlarging the existing LIGO-VIRGO network with one or more planned or
proposed detectors in Japan (LCGT), Australia, and India brings major benefits,
including much larger detection rate increases than previously thought... I
show that there is a universal probability distribution function (pdf) for
detected SNR values, which implies that the most likely SNR value of the first
detected event will be 1.26 times the search threshold. For binary systems, I
also derive the universal pdf for detected values of the orbital inclination,
taking into account the Malmquist bias; this implies that the number of
gamma-ray bursts associated with detected binary coalescences should be 3.4
times larger than expected from just the beaming fraction of the gamma burst.
Using network antenna patterns, I propose three figures of merit that
characterize the relative performance of different networks... Adding {\em any}
new site to the planned LIGO-VIRGO network can dramatically increase, by
factors of 2 to 4, the detected event rate by allowing coherent data analysis
to reduce the spurious instrumental coincident background. Moving one of the
LIGO detectors to Australia additionally improves direction-finding by a factor
of 4 or more. Adding LCGT to the original LIGO-VIRGO network not only improves
direction-finding but will further increase the detection rate over the
extra-site gain by factors of almost 2, partly by improving the network duty
cycle... Enlarged advanced networks could look forward to detecting three to

Universal law of fractionation for slightly polydisperse systems
By perturbing about a general monodisperse system, we provide a complete description of two-phase equilibria in any system which is slightly polydisperse in some property (e.g., particle size, charge, etc.). We derive a universal law of fractionation which is corroborated by comprehensive experiments on a model colloid-polymer mixture. We furthermore predict that phase separation is an effective method of reducing polydispersity only for systems with a skewed distribution of the polydisperse property
Prospects for joint radio telescope and gravitational wave searches for astrophysical transients
The radio skies remain mostly unobserved when it comes to transient
phenomena. The direct detection of gravitational waves will mark a major
milestone of modern astronomy, as an entirely new window will open on the
universe. Two apparently independent phenomena can be brought together in a
coincident effort that has the potential to boost both searches. In this paper
we will outline the scientific case that stands behind these future joint
observations and will describe the methods that might be used to conduct the
searches and analyze the data. The targeted sources are binary systems of
compact objects, known to be strong candidate sources for gravitational waves.
Detection of transients coincident in these two channels would be a significant
smoking gun for first direct detection of gravitational waves, and would open
up a new field for characterization of astrophysical transients involving

Electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave transient signal candidates
Pioneering efforts aiming at the development of multi-messenger gravitational
wave and electromagnetic astronomy have been made. An electromagnetic
observation follow-up program of candidate gravitational wave events has been
performed (Dec 17 2009 to Jan 8 2010 and Sep 4 to Oct 20 2010) during the
recent runs of the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors. It involved
ground-based and space electromagnetic facilities observing the sky at optical,
X-ray and radio wavelengths. The joint gravitational wave and electromagnetic
observation study requires the development of specific image analysis
procedures able to discriminate the possible electromagnetic counterpart of
gravitational wave triggers from contaminant/background events. The paper
presents an overview of the electromagnetic follow-up program and the image

Cyclic behaviour of stone and brick masonry under uniaxial compressive loading
An experimental research concerning the uniaxial compressive behaviour of stone and brick specimens, as well as masonry prisms, is presented. Local sandstone and clay brick materials were used in order to obtain results representative with respect to local constructions. Aiming at a comprehensive material description, a set of displacementcontrolled
experiments were carried out, both under monotonic and cyclic compressive loading. The procedure adopted for testing is described and the results are discussed, namely material brittleness, intrinsic variability, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation.Dans cet article une recherche expérimentale
à propos du comportement en compression uniaxial de spécimens de pierre et de la brique, aussi bien que prismes de maçonnerie, est présenté. Grès et brique de l’argile locale ont été utilisés pour obtenir des résultats représentatifs en ce qui concerne les constructions locales. Avec l’objective de obtenir une description matérielle complète, un ensemble de tests contrôlé par déplacement a été emporté, sous chargement de compression monotonic et cyclique.
