    Sorcery and Marriages: About Two Novgorod Birchbark Documents Found in 2005 In this article the author expounds on some marginal notes on two twelfth-century gramoty (no. 954 and no. 955). When these were discovered in the summer of 2005, they were thought to display obscene implications because of the reference to female genitals in text no. 955 and because of the presence (in the other text) of the verb pošibati. If interpreted as ‘rape’, the latter would transform gramota 954 into evidence of cases of zoophilia. On closer analysis, however, these documents turn out to be of much greater interest and not bawdy at all, since they reveal evident links with East-Slavic pre-Christian cultural traditions. These notes will be further developed in a new edition of the author’s book, Iscrizioni novgorodiane su corteccia di betulla (Udine 1995), currently in progress

    using thermal inertia of buildings with phase change material for demand response

    Abstract: In recent years, demand response programs have proved useful in managing peak demand and meeting sustainability goals, enabling an efficient use of the smart grid. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads in buildings constitute a large proportion of the total energy consumption of households, and accordingly, a flexible and efficient operation of these devices can aid power utilities in meeting load management objectives while reducing consumer's electricity bills. With the emergence of promising new technologies, such as phase change materials (PCM), buildings can serve as a virtual thermal energy storage, which improves energy efficiency and also allows occupants to offer grid services like peak demand reduction. The objective of this paper is to establish the effectiveness of PCM as a demand response resource, demonstrating the extent to which it can be used for peak demand reduction. A wide range of scenarios are considered to investigate the impacts of geographical location, PCM melting point, duration of precooling and preheating, setting points of HVAC system, thickness and location of PCM, on the capability of the PCM in reducing or shifting the cooling and heating load. All simulations are performed using the EnergyPlus platform, examining typical residential buildings in five Australian cities: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth. The simulation results showed a decrease in the HVAC demand in the buildings with PCM, in all cities, with the highest reductions observed in Hobart and Melbourne. The integration of a 20mm thick PCM in the roof, wall and floor of the building yielded a 21.8% and 16.7% reduction in annual HVAC demand in Hobart and Melbourne respectively, when compared to the building without PCM. However, this is with the assumption that the HVAC system is operating 24 hours a day for a whole year. The PCM-integrated building showed a shift in the HVAC demand in all cities except Perth. A shift by 9 minutes, 3 minutes, 60 minutes and 103 minutes was recorded in the cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart respectively. The simulation results will be used in subsequent research to schedule the HVAC demand using a home energy management system

    DIFFERENT AQUAPORIN-4 EXPRESSION IN GLIOBLASTOMA MULTIFORME PATIENTS WITH AND WITHOUT SEIZURES

    Aquaporin-4 (AQP-4), the most important water channel in the brain, is expressed by astrocyte endfeet abutting microvessels. Altered expression levels of AQP-4 and redistribution of the protein throughout the membranes of cells found in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) lead to development of the oedema often found surrounding the tumour mass. Dysregulation of AQP-4 also occurs in hippocampal sclerosis and cortical dysplasia in patients with refractory partial epilepsy. This work reports on analysis of the relationship between AQP-4 expression and the incidence of epileptic seizures in patients with GBM. Immunohistochemical and PCR techniques were used to evaluate AQP-4 in biopsy specimens from 19 patients with GBM, 10 of whom had a history of seizures prior to surgery.     3DVAR assimilation of SSM/I data over the sea for the IOP2b MAP case

    International audienceData assimilation by 3DVAR of data from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) has been performed to study the IOP2b case (19-21 September 1999) of the Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP). Only data over the sea surface are used to avoid the contamination of the surface emissivity. Moreover, the rainy data are filtered out because the assimilation algorithm of 3DVAR does not take into account the scattering processes. SSM/I data are assimilated in two different ways: as Brightness Temperature directly, or as Precipitable Water and surface wind speed retrieved from the Brightness Temperature. The effect of the thinning of the observations has been studied and a set of sensitivity test cases has been carried out; the one by one removal of the SSM/I frequencies from the initial dataset allows to evaluate their impact on the Initial Conditions. A few experiments are performed using these new Initial Conditions to initialize the MM5 (PSU/NCAR) model. The results show that the assimilation of the retrieved quantities, i.e. Precipitable Water and surface wind speed, does not produces large improvement in the Initial Conditions. Vice versa, the assimilation of the Brightness temperatures produces a large variability of the Initial Conditions. The forecast experiments show that the model is very sensitive to the 22GHz and 37GHz frequencies

    Evaluation of radiative transfer schemes for mesoscale model data assimilation: a case study

    International audienceThe assimilation of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data into the Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) allows for improving the weather forecast. However the results suggested an update the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) within the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) algorithm which is tailored for non rainy conditions only. To this purpose, a new RTE algorithm is tested, in order to account for radiometric response in rainy regions. The new brightness temperatures (TB) are estimated by using hydrometeor profiles from the MM5 mesoscale model, running with two different microphysical parameterizations. The goodness of the results is assessed by comparing the new TB with those of the original RTE algorithm in the 3DVAR code and the SSM/I observed data. The results confirm a better reliability of the new RTE compared to the old one

    Impact of radar data assimilation for the simulation of a heavy rainfall case in central Italy using WRF–3DVAR

    Abstract. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of the assimilation of Doppler weather radar (DWR) data in a mesoscale model for the forecast of a heavy rainfall event that occurred in Italy in the urban area of Rome from 19 to 22 May 2008. For this purpose, radar reflectivity and radial velocity acquired from Monte Midia Doppler radar are assimilated into the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model, version 3.4.1. The general goal is to improve the quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF): with this aim, several experiments are performed using the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) technique. Moreover, sensitivity tests to outer loops are performed to include non-linearity in the observation operators. In order to identify the best initial conditions (ICs), statistical indicators such as forecast accuracy, frequency bias, false alarm rate and equitable threat score for the accumulated precipitation are used. The results show that the assimilation of DWR data has a large impact on both the position of convective cells and on the rainfall forecast of the analyzed event. A positive impact is also found if they are ingested together with conventional observations. Sensitivity to the use of two or three outer loops is also found if DWR data are assimilated together with conventional data
