    Air Cooling and Dehumidification with a zeolite coated heat exchanger regenerated by Solar thermal energy

    This paper presents some experimental results of a new device for low energy/low exergy air conditioning system. The device can realize both dehumidification and sensible cooling of external air, and it is designed for very low pressure drops, drastically reducing the electricity consumption for the driving fans. It is composed by a finned coil heat exchanger, coated with a SAPO-34 zeolite layer, that handles both heat and mass transfer in a single component. During the adsorption a cold water flow at 20 °C circulates through the coil, cooling the air and realizing in a single step a complete air-treatment. Hot water produced with evacuated solar collector is then used to regenerate the zeolite

    Gli argomenti trattati nel presente lavoro di tesi si inseriscono all’interno dell'attività di ricerca svolta presso il “Dipartimento di Ingegneria civile e industriale”, sezione di Ingegneria Aerospaziale, relativa allo sviluppo, costruzione e sperimentazione di un velivolo anfibio ultraleggero con configurazione alare prandtl plane. In collaborazione con la EDI progetti, è stato svolta una analisi del sistema di trasmissione di potenza dal motore all’elica. Sono state prese in considerazione diverse possibilità, come trasmissione con alberi e cinghie, con elementi meccanici quali ruote dentate, fino ad arrivare ad una soluzione in cui la propulsione del velivolo viene affidata a due eliche intubate, azionate per mezzo di cinghie dentate. Sono state sviluppate le soluzioni costruttive della varie parti, ponendo particolare attenzione alla progettazione dei mandrini delle eliche, e del telaio della trasmissione

    Acute epiploic appendagitis : ultrasound and computed tomography findings of a rare case of acute abdominal pain and the role of other imaging techniques

    Purpose: Acute epiploic appendagitis (EA) is a relatively rare, benign and local inflammatory disease involving the epiploic appendices. Unlike its mimics, EA is generally a self-limiting inflammatory disease and can be treated conservatively. Case presentation: A 33-year-old Caucasian man presented to our emergency department with a sever and sharp left iliac fossa pain. He underwent abdominal X-ray, ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) evaluations. Conclusion: We illustrate US and CT findings to increase the radiologists’ awareness of this condition and to avoid diagnostic delay and unnecessary use of antibiotics, hospitalization and surgery

    Synthesis of Novel Tryptamine Derivatives and Their Biological Activity as Antitumor Agents

    We synthesized five novel tryptamine derivatives characterized by the presence of an azelayl chain or of a 1,1,1-trichloroethyl group, in turn connected to another heterocyclic scaffold. The combination of tryptamin-, 1,1,1-trichloroethyl- and 2-aminopyrimidinyl- moieties produced compound 9 identified as the most active compound in hematological cancer cell lines (IC50 = 0.57–65.32 M). Moreover, keeping constant the presence of the tryptaminic scaffold and binding it to the azelayl moiety, the compounds maintain biological activity. Compound 13 is still active against hematological cancer cell lines and shows a selective effect only on HT29 cells (IC50 = 0.006 M) among solid tumor models. Compound 14 loses activity on all leukemic lines, while showing a high level of toxicity on all solid tumor lines tested (IC50 0.0015–0.469 M)

    Protective effect of procyanidin-rich grape seed extract against Gram-negative virulence factors

    Biofilm formation and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are implicated in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Grape seeds, wine industry by-products, have antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the protective effect of procyanidin-rich grape seed extract (prGSE), from unfermented pomace of Vitis vinifera L. cv Bellone, on bacterial LPS-induced oxidative stress and epithelial barrier integrity damage has been studied in a model of Caco-2 cells. The prGSE was characterized at the molecular level using HPLC and NMR. The in vitro activity of prGSE against formation of biofilm of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium and Escherichia coli was investigated. In vivo, prGSE activity using infected Galleria mellonella larvae has been evaluated. The results show that the prGSE, if administered with LPS, can significantly reduce the LPS-induced permeability alteration. Moreover, the ability of the extract to prevent Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production induced by the LPS treatment of Caco-2 cells was demonstrated. prGSE inhibited the biofilm formation of E. coli and S. Typhimurium. In terms of in vivo activity, an increase in survival of infected G. mellonella larvae after treatment with prGSE was demonstrated. In conclusion, grape seed extracts could be used to reduce GI damage caused by bacterial endotoxin and biofilms of Gram-negative bacteria

    Rearrangements of ATP5L-KMT2A in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

    Recent genomic studies have identified a wide range of novel genetic alterations that have substantially increased our knowledge of the biology of B- and T-progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL, T-ALL) and defined new subtypes with prognostic and therapeutic relevance.1-4 Thanks to the use of transcriptome sequencing approaches, new cryptic fusion transcripts have been described, such as the ATP5L-KMT2A gene fusion, described by Gestrich et al. in a 14-month-old patient with aggressive B-ALL.5 ATP5L or ATP5MG (ATP Synthase Membrane Subunit G) catalyzes ATP synthesis during oxidative phosphorylation.6 This protein has recently been reported to interact with a SARS-CoV-2 protein.7 The histone lysine [K]-methyl transferase 2A (KMT2A) gene is a transcriptional coactivator that plays an essential role in regulating gene expression during early development and haematopoiesis. It is frequently rearranged to over 135 translocation partner genes in acute leukaemias.8 ATP5L is a novel KMT2A fusion partner not detectable by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) or karyotype, due to the closeness of the two genes on chromosome 11q23. The Cleveland Medical Centre team found a reciprocal out-of-frame ATP5L-KMT2A rearrangement that juxtaposes the ATP5L exon 1 to the KMT2A exon 2, with the insertion of an extra nucleotide (G) at the fusion site.5 We sequenced leukaemic cells from eight adult ALL patients (two T-ALL, five B-ALL Philadelphia negative (Ph−) and one B-ALL Ph+; Table I) by a 199 gene RNA-sequencing panel (RNA-seq; Pan-Heme FusionPlex, ArcherDx Inc., Boulder, CO, USA).The study was supported by European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) (GA 306242-NGS-PTL) and Associazione Italiana Leucemie (AIL)

    Prevalence of Atopic Dermatitis in Italian Schoolchildren: Factors Affecting its Variation

    The frequency of atopic dermatitis in Italian children and its relationship with selected variables were analysed in a large survey of skin health conducted in Italy. In 1997 we conducted a survey on schoolchildren aged 12–17 years from 13 areas of northern, central and southern Italy. For the present analyses, 3179 Caucasian children (1618 males, 1561 females) were considered. A diagnosis of atopic dermatitis was reported in 224 cases (7.0%). The frequency of reported atopic dermatitis was significantly higher in children with asthma (rate ratio (RR) 4.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.1–6.5). The lifetime prevalence of a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis was higher among schoolchildren reporting a diagnosis of psoriasis (RR 5.5, 95% CI 3.0–10.1) and vitiligo (RR 16.1, 95% CI 6.5–39.5). This study gives estimates of the lifetime prevalence of atopic dermatitis in adolescents in Italy and emphasizes the direct association between the condition and other immune-related skin diseases

    Secreting Germ Cell Tumors of the Central Nervous System: A Long-Term Follow-up Experience

    Simple Summary Nongerminomatous germ cell tumors of the central nervous system are rare tumours. Differently from germinomas, they have a severe prognosis above all when presenting with high alfafetoprotein levels. We report the results of a combined chemo- and radiotherapy approach in 28 patients affected by this disease with craniospinal irradiation and a boost tailored on the response to pre-radiant chemotherapy. Metastatic patients and high-risk disease are discussed as well. The 5 years overall survival and event-free survival were both 81% while at 10 years they were 81% and 76% respectively. Our series, even if small, concerns nongerminomatous germ cell tumors only (whereas in some papers they are mixed with pure germinomas), furthermore our patients had a very long follow-up (over 11 years) with encouraging survival data for localized and metastatic disease. Improving survival while trying to contain/avoid the long-term sequelae of chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the main goals of future studies. Introduction: Due to the rarity of nongerminomatous germ cell tumors (NGGCT) with non-standard treatment as yet, we report retrospectively our 30 year experience with chemotherapy followed by craniospinal irradiation (CSI), plus a boost of whole ventricular irradiation (WVI)/tumor bed (TB), tailored to pre-radiation chemotherapy response. Methods: Between 1988 and 2016, 28 patients received four cycles of PEB (cisplatin/etoposide/bleomycin), then CSI, and two further PEB cycles. Between 1988 and1994, CSI was 25.5 Gy for patients in complete remission (CR), 30 Gy if in partial remission (PR) or metastatic, with a boost to TB up to 45-54 Gy. In the period of 1995-2010, the boost included WVI and any extra-ventricular tumor sites up to 45 Gy. After 2010, CSI was reduced to 25.5 Gy for all non-metastatic patients, and a boost was given only to TB up to 40.5/45.5 Gy, depending on patients' CR/PR status. After 2003, patients with alfafetoprotein (alpha FP) > 1000 ng/mL received intensified treatment, also including autologous stem cell transplantation. Results: Among 28 patients (23 males; median age 12 years, 6 metastatic), 25 responded to PEB, and three progressed (PD) after one to four cycles; 26 received radiotherapy obtaining 13 CR, 7 PR and 5 stable disease (SD), 1 PD; 6 (21%) died (5 for disease, 1 for pneumonia while in CR). Five-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were both 81%; 10 year OS and PFS 81% and 76%, respectively (median follow-up 11 years). Conclusions: Survival for children with NGGCT, independently from disease extent, was encouraging. Further studies should elucidate which patients could benefit from reduced volume and dose irradiation

    Prevalence and Prognostic Role of IDH Mutations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Results of the GIMEMA AML1516 Protocol

    IDH1/2 mutations are common in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and represent a therapeutic target. The GIMEMA AML1516 observational protocol was designed to study the prevalence of IDH1/2 mutations and associations with clinico-biological parameters in a cohort of Italian AML patients. We analyzed a cohort of 284 AML consecutive patients at diagnosis, 139 females and 145 males, of a median age of 65 years (range: 19–86). Of these, 38 (14%) harbored IDH1 and 51 (18%) IDH2 mutations. IDH1/2 mutations were significantly associated with WHO PS >2 (p < 0.001) and non-complex karyotype (p = 0.021) when compared to IDH1/2-WT. Furthermore, patients with IDH1 mutations were more frequently NPM1-mutated (p = 0.007) and had a higher platelet count (p = 0.036). At relapse, IDH1/2 mutations were detected in 6 (25%) patients. As per the outcome, 60.5% of IDH1/2-mutated patients achieved complete remission; overall survival and event-free survival at 2 years were 44.5% and 36.1%, respectively: these rates were similar to IDH1/2-WT. In IDH1/2-mutated patients, high WBC proved to be an independent prognostic factor for survival. In conclusion, the GIMEMA AML1516 confirms that IDH1/2 mutations are frequently detected at diagnosis and underlines the importance of recognizing IDH1/2-mutated cases up-front to offer the most appropriate therapeutic strategy, given the availability of IDH1/2 inhibitors
