    An insight into Gandharan Art: Materials and Techniques of Polychrome Decoration

    Gandharan art developed in the Himalayan area in the early centuries CE. It has been investigated mostly from an iconographic point of view, missing, until very recently, a systematic technical investigation of materials and techniques. Recently our team began performing chemical analyses of the traces of the polychromy originally covering statues, reliefs and architectural decorations, to discover the ancient painting techniques and artistic technologies. This paper presents the results of the analytical investigation (optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) of pigments, ground layers and binders of a new group of samples taken from stucco architectural decorations (2nd–3rd/4th centuries CE). The samples were collected directly at an archaeological site in the Swat Valley, ensuring the exact knowledge of their stratigraphic provenance, as well as the absence of any restoration treatment applied prior sampling. The results are discussed in the wider context of Gandharan polychromy investigated so far by our team, as found in sculptures and architectural decorations preserved in museums (in Italy and France) and in archaeological excavations in Pakistan. The aim of this research is to shed light on the materials and techniques of this Buddhist ancient art from this region and on the influences exerted on it from Eastern and Western artistic traditions

    decision theory criteria for the planning of distributed energy storage systems in the presence of uncertainties

    This paper deals with the use of distributed energy storage systems in microgrids, and proposes a planning method which accounts for the uncertainties of load and distributed generation. Objectives of the planning method are the reduction of the energy costs, while providing the supply of ancillary services as a technical support to the network. The energy costs are evaluated considering a hourly varying pricing scheme and optimizing the storage systems charging/discharging stages. The technical support is devoted to the restraint of bus voltage amplitudes, and of network components' currents/powers within admissible ranges. The input data uncertainties are managed through three decision theory criteria (i.e., the minimization of expected costs; an approach based on the weighted regret felt by the design engineer; and a stability area criterion), which allow considering the multiple design alternatives and futures (i.e., possible values of uncertain input data) in an accurate and feasible way. The design alternatives refer to the size and location of the distributed storage systems, while each future is associated with a different level of load demand and power production of distributed generation over the whole planning period. The results of numerical applications are reported and discussed with reference to a Cigre test network

    Gevrey local solvability in locally integrable structures

    We consider a locally integrable real-analytic structure, and we investigate the local solvability in the category of Gevrey functions and ultradistributions of the complex d' naturally induced by the de Rham complex. We prove that the so-called condition Y(q) on the signature of the Levi form, for local solvability of d' u=f, is still necessary even if we take f in the classes of Gevrey functions and look for solutions u in the corresponding spaces of ultradistributions.Comment: 12 page

    Pioglitazone Treatment Increases Survival and Prevents Body Weight Loss in Tumor-Bearing Animals: Possible Anti-Cachectic Effect

    Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by profound involuntary weight loss, fat depletion, skeletal muscle wasting, and asthenia; all symptoms are not entirely attributable to inadequate nutritional intake. Adipose tissue and skeletal muscle loss during cancer cachexia development has been described systematically. the former was proposed to precede and be more rapid than the latter, which presents a means for the early detection of cachexia in cancer patients. Recently, pioglitazone (PGZ) was proposed to exhibit anticancer properties, including a reduction in insulin resistance and adipose tissue loss; nevertheless, few studies have evaluated its effect on survival. for greater insight into a potential anti-cachectic effect due to PGZ, 8-week-old male Wistar rats were subcutaneously inoculated with 1 mL (2x10(7)) of Walker 256 tumor cells. the animals were randomly assigned to two experimental groups: TC (tumor + saline-control) and TP5 (tumor + PGZ/5 mg). Body weight, food ingestion and tumor growth were measured at baseline and after removal of tumor on days 7, 14 and 26. Samples from different visceral adipose tissue (AT) depots were collected on days 7 and 14 and stored at -80oC (5 to 7 animals per day/group). the PGZ treatment showed an increase in the survival average of 27.3%(P<0.01) when compared to TC. It was also associated with enhanced body mass preservation (40.7 and 56.3%, p<0.01) on day 14 and 26 compared with the TC group. the treatment also reduced the final tumor mass (53.4%, p<0.05) and anorexia compared with the TC group during late-stage cachexia. the retroperitoneal AT (RPAT) mass was preserved on day 7 compared with the TC group during the same experimental period. Such effect also demonstrates inverse relationship with tumor growth, on day 14. Gene expression of PPAR-gamma, adiponectin, LPL and C/EBP-alpha from cachectic rats was upregulated after PGZ. Glucose uptake from adipocyte cells (RPAT) was entirely re-established due to PGZ treatment.     Produção e composição bromatológica de forrageiras em sistema de integração lavoura‑pecuária em diferentes épocas de semeadura

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the dry matter yield and chemical composition of forage in crop-livestock integration, according to different sowing dates. A randomized experimental block design in a 4x3 factorial scheme was used, with four forage plants (palisadegrass, Urochloa brizantha; fox millet, Setaria italica; pearl millet, Pennisetum glaucum; and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor) sowed on three dates, in two season (winter/spring and summer/autumn), in succession to soybean. The pearl millet and sorghum produced the highest amount of dry matter in all sowing dates, at both growing seasons and, contrary to palisadegrass and fox millet, it did not reduce the amount of total digestible nutrients. Crude protein levels decreased with the advancement of sowing dates in winter/spring and increased in summer/autumn, except for palisadegrass and pearl millet. Sorghum showed the lowest concentrations of neutral detergent fiber in the second and third sowing dates in winter/spring, and in the first sowing date in summer/autumn. In the second and third sowing dates in winter/spring, sorghum showed the lowest content of acid detergent fiber. In relation to the cell wall components, only the hemicellulose contents did not change in the forages due to sowing dates, at both seasons.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de matéria seca e a composição bromatológica de forrageiras em sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária, em diferentes datas de semeadura. Foi usado delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4x3, com quatro forrageiras – braquiária, Urochloa brizantha; capim-moa, Setaria italica; milheto, Pennisetum glaucum; e sorgo forrageiro, Sorghum bicolor – semeadas em três datas nas estações inverno/primavera e verão/outono, em sucessão à soja. O milheto e o sorgo forrageiro produziram maior quantidade de matéria seca em todas as datas de semeadura, nas duas estações de cultivo e, ao contrário da braquiária e do capim-moa, não diminuíram o teor de nutrientes digestíveis totais no inverno/primavera. Os teores de proteína bruta reduziram com o avanço das datas de semeadura no inverno/primavera e aumentaram no verão/outono, exceto para braquiária e milheto. O sorgo apresentou os menores teores de fibras em detergente neutro nas segunda e terceira datas de semeadura no inverno/primavera, e na primeira data de semeadura no verão/outono. Nas segunda e terceiras datas do inverno/primavera, o sorgo apresentou menor teor de fibras em detergente ácido. Quanto aos constituintes da parede celular, apenas os teores de hemicelulose não se alteram nas forrageiras em virtude das datas de semeadura, em ambas as estações

    Intrauterine food restriction impairs the lipogenesis process in the mesenteric adipocytes from low-birth-weight rats into adulthood

    BackgroundIntrauterine food restriction (IFR) during pregnancy is associated with low birth weight (LBW) and obesity in adulthood. It is known that white adipose tissue (WAT) plays critical metabolic and endocrine functions; however, this tissue’s behavior before weight gain and obesity into adulthood is poorly studied. Thus, we evaluated the repercussions of IFR on the lipogenesis and lipolysis processes in the offspring and described the effects on WAT inflammatory cytokine production and secretion.MethodsWe induced IFR by providing gestating rats with 50% of the necessary chow daily amount during all gestational periods. After birth, we monitored the offspring for 12 weeks. The capacity of isolated fat cells from mesenteric white adipose tissue (meWAT) to perform lipogenesis (14C-labeled glucose incorporation into lipids) and lipolysis (with or without isoproterenol) was assessed. The expression levels of genes linked to these processes were measured by real-time PCR. In parallel, Multiplex assays were conducted to analyze pro-inflammatory markers, such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α, in the meWAT.ResultsTwelve-week-old LBW rats presented elevated serum triacylglycerol (TAG) content and attenuated lipogenesis and lipolysis compared to control animals. Inflammatory cytokine levels were increased in the meWAT of LBW rats, evidenced by augmented secretion by adipocytes and upregulated gene and protein expression by the tissue. However, there were no significant alterations in the serum cytokines content from the LBW group. Additionally, liver weight, TAG content in the hepatocytes and serum glucocorticoid levels were increased in the LBW group.ConclusionThe results demonstrate that IFR throughout pregnancy yields LBW offspring characterized by inhibited lipogenesis and lipolysis and reduced meWAT lipid storage at 12 weeks. The increased serum TAG content may contribute to the augmented synthesis and secretion of pro-inflammatory markers detected in the LBW group

    The IMPACT study: early loss of skeletal muscle mass in advanced pancreatic cancer patients

    Abstract Background Pancreatic cancer (PC) patients have multiple risk factors for sarcopenia and loss of skeletal muscle mass (LSMM), which may cause greater treatment toxicities, reduced response to cancer therapy, prolonged hospitalization, impaired quality of life, and worse prognosis. Methods This is a retrospective study on advanced PC patients treated at the Department of Oncology of Udine, Italy, from January 2012 to November 2017. Among 162 patients who received chemotherapy, 94 consecutive patients with an available computed tomography (CT) scan were retrospectively analyzed. The primary objective of our study was to explore if an early LSMM ≥ 10% (measured at first radiological evaluation and compared with baseline) and/or baseline sarcopenia may impact prognosis. Baseline sarcopenia was defined according to Prado's criteria. Skeletal muscle area was measured as cross‐sectional areas (cm2) using CT scan data through the Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) image system. Results In the whole cohort, 48% of patients were ≤70 years old, and 50% had metastatic disease. At baseline, 73% of patients had sarcopenia, and 16% presented a visceral fat area ≥ 44 cm2/m2. Overall, 21% experienced an early LSMM ≥ 10%. Approximately 33% of sarcopenic patients at baseline and ~35% of patients with early LSMM ≥ 10% had a body mass index > 25 kg/m2. Of note, 71% of patients were evaluated by a nutritionist, and 56% received a dietary supplementation (oral and/or parenteral). After a median follow‐up of 30.44 months, median overall survival (OS) was 11.28 months, whereas median progression‐free survival (PFS) was 5.72 months. By multivariate analysis, early LSMM ≥ 10% was significantly associated with worse OS [hazard ratio (HR): 2.16; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.23–3.78; P = 0.007] and PFS (HR: 2.31; 95% CI 1.30–4.09; P = 0.004). Moreover, an exploratory analysis showed that inflammatory indexes, such as neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio variation, impact early LSMM ≥ 10% (odds ratio 1.31, 95% CI 1.06–1.61, P = 0.010). Conclusions Early LSMM ≥ 10% has a negative prognostic role in advanced PC patients. Further prospective investigations are needed to confirm these preliminary data
