    Long-term power-law fluctuation in Internet traffic

    Power-law fluctuation in observed Internet packet flow are discussed. The data is obtained by a multi router traffic grapher (MRTG) system for 9 months. The internet packet flow is analyzed using the detrended fluctuation analysis. By extracting the average daily trend, the data shows clear power-law fluctuations. The exponents of the fluctuation for the incoming and outgoing flow are almost unity. Internet traffic can be understood as a daily periodic flow with power-law fluctuations.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Renormalizing a BRST-invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2 in Yang-Mills theory

    We discuss the renormalization of a BRST and anti-BRST invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2 in Yang-Mills theory with the general BRST and anti-BRST invariant gauge fixing term of the Lorentz type. The interest of this study stems from a recent claim that the non-vanishing vacuum condensate of the composite operator in question can be an origin of mass gap and quark confinement in any manifestly covariant gauge, as proposed by one of the authors. First, we obtain the renormalization group flow of the Yang-Mills theory. Next, we show the multiplicative renormalizability of the composite operator and that the BRST and anti-BRST invariance of the bare composite operator is preserved under the renormalization. Third, we perform the operator product expansion of the gluon and ghost propagators and obtain the Wilson coefficient corresponding to the vacuum condensate of mass dimension 2. Finally, we discuss the connection of this work with the previous works and argue the physical implications of the obtained results.Comment: 49 pages, 35 eps-files, A number of typographic errors are corrected.     Neutrinos and Gauge Unification

    The approximate unification of gauge couplings is the best indirect evidence for low-energy supersymmetry, although it is not perfect in its simplest realizations. Given the experimental evidence for small non-zero neutrino masses, it is plausible to extend the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino chiral multiplets, with large Majorana masses below the unification scale, so that a see-saw mechanism can be implemented. In this extended MSSM, the unification prediction for the strong gauge coupling constant at M_Z can be lowered by up to \sim 5%, bringing it closer to the experimental value at 1\sigma, therefore improving significantly the accuracy of gauge coupling unification.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, 1 figur

    Test of the Conserved Vector Current Hypothesis by beta-ray Angular Distribution Measurement in the Mass-8 System

    The beta-ray angular correlations for the spin alignments of 8Li and 8B have been observed in order to test the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis. The alignment correlation terms were combined with the known beta-alpha-angular correlation terms to determine all the matrix elements contributing to the correlation terms. The weak magnetism term, 7.5\pm0.2, deduced from the beta-ray correlation terms was consistent with the CVC prediction 7.3\pm0.2, deduced from the analog-gamma-decay measurement based on the CVC hypothesis. However, there was no consistent CVC prediction for the second-forbidden term associated with the weak vector current. The experimental value for the second-forbidden term was 1.0 \pm 0.3, while the CVC prediction was 0.1 \pm 0.4 or 2.1 \pm 0.5.Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    On ghost condensation, mass generation and Abelian dominance in the Maximal Abelian Gauge

    Recent work claimed that the off-diagonal gluons (and ghosts) in pure Yang-Mills theories, with Maximal Abelian gauge fixing (MAG), attain a dynamical mass through an off-diagonal ghost condensate. This condensation takes place due to a quartic ghost interaction, unavoidably present in MAG for renormalizability purposes. The off-diagonal mass can be seen as evidence for Abelian dominance. We discuss why ghost condensation of the type discussed in those works cannot be the reason for the off-diagonal mass and Abelian dominance, since it results in a tachyonic mass.     We have fabricated monolithic pixel sensors in 0.2 ÎŒm Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) CMOS technology, consisting of a thick sensor layer and a thin circuit layer with an insulating buried-oxide, which has many advantages. However, it has been found that the applied electric field in the sensor layer also affects the transistor operation in the adjacent circuit layer. This limits the applicable sensor bias well below the full depletion voltage. To overcome this, we performed a TCAD simulation and added an additional p-well (buried pwell) in the SOI process.     Verifiable Model of Neutrino Masses from Large Extra Dimensions

    We propose a new scenario of neutrino masses with a Higgs triplet (Ο++,Ο+,Ο0)(\xi^{++},\xi^+,\xi^0) in a theory of large extra dimensions. Lepton number violation in a distant brane acts as the source of a very small trilinear coupling of Ο\xi to the standard Higgs doublet in our brane. Small realistic Majorana neutrino masses are \underline{naturally} obtained with the fundamental scale M∗∌O(1)M_* \sim {\cal O}(1) TeV, foretelling the possible discovery of Ο\xi (m_\xi\lsim M_*) at future colliders. Decays of Ο++\xi^{++} into same-sign dileptons are fixed by the neutrino mass matrix. Observation of Ό−e\mu-e conversion in nuclei is predicted.Comment: A comment on Tevatron reach and two references added. Discussion and conclusions unchange
