Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a Cameroonian girl, a rare tumour in Central Africa: case report and review of literature

    No full text
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the nasopharynx. It arises from the mucosal epithelium of the nasopharynx, predominantly the Fossa of Rosenmüller. In most parts of the world, it is relatively rare, but in Asian countries where salted smoked fish containing nitrosamines is popularly consumed, it is one of the more common cancers. This work reports a case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a rare tumour in Central Africa, in a young Cameroonian girl, and we posit that possibly, an increasing consumption of smoked fish could trigger an increasing incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Africa as obtainable in Asia. Keywords: Carcinoma, magnetic resonance imaging, nasopharyn

Background: Breast cancer is a common debilitating ailment among women. Early detection assisted by radiological screening procedure is paramount. Objective: To analyse mammograms of Douala women with assessment of breast lesion patterns, masses, calcifications and proportions of screeners.Design: A prospective study.Setting: Polyclinic Bonanjo, Douala, Cameroon.Subjects: Sixty nine female patients. Methods: A prospective study of women who concurrently came for mammography for whatever reason for a period of seven months was done. Two basic views for each breast were carried out. Mammograms were reported independently by Radiologists and harmonised. Results were analysed with SSPS 12.0. Excluded were women below 40 years. Results: Sixty nine patients with age range of 40-69 years and mean age of 54.5years were studied. About 73.91% of these patients came for screening with only 33% of them having mammographic pathologies unlike diagnostic mammography which yielded 61% of pathologies. All women who came for screening were educated. The commonest pathologies in all the mammograms were benign calcification and lactiferous duct dilation. About 4.34% had definitive diagnosis of malignant breast lesion and 66.66% of these patients were aged above 60 years. Conclusion: Educated women are more responsive in embracing screening mammography. There is an inverse relationship between screening mammography and identifiable breast pathology
