Moduli Dependent mu-Terms in a Heterotic Standard Model
In this paper, we present a formalism for computing the non-vanishing Higgs
mu-terms in a heterotic standard model. This is accomplished by calculating the
cubic product of the cohomology groups associated with the vector bundle moduli
(phi), Higgs (H) and Higgs conjugate (Hbar) superfields. This leads to terms
proportional to phi H Hbar in the low energy superpotential which, for non-zero
moduli expectation values, generate moduli dependent mu-terms of the form
H Hbar. It is found that these interactions are subject to two very restrictive
selection rules, each arising from a Leray spectral sequence, which greatly
reduce the number of moduli that can couple to Higgs-Higgs conjugate fields. We
apply our formalism to a specific heterotic standard model vacuum. The
non-vanishing cubic interactions phi H Hbar are explicitly computed in this
context and shown to contain only four of the nineteen vector bundle moduli.Comment: 23 pages, LaTe
Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic Standard Models
In this paper, we present a formalism for computing the Yukawa couplings in
heterotic standard models. This is accomplished by calculating the relevant
triple products of cohomology groups, leading to terms proportional to Q*H*u,
Q*Hbar*d, L*H*nu and L*Hbar*e in the low energy superpotential. These
interactions are subject to two very restrictive selection rules arising from
the geometry of the Calabi-Yau manifold. We apply our formalism to the
"minimal" heterotic standard model whose observable sector matter spectrum is
exactly that of the MSSM. The non-vanishing Yukawa interactions are explicitly
computed in this context. These interactions exhibit a texture rendering one
out of the three quark/lepton families naturally light.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe
Explaining participation in regional transnational social movement organizations
Since the late 1980s, governments have focused intensely on formalizing political and economic relationships within regions. There has also been a concurrent rise in transnational, regional level organizing among social movement activists globally, suggesting the regionalization of 'global civil society.' However, opportunities for participation in transnational associations vary widely across countries. In this article, we examine the influence of international (both global and regional) institutional contexts, citizen participation in international society, and national level factors on varying levels of participation in regional transnational social movement organizations (TSMOs). We use negative binomial regression to examine relationships among these factors at three time points: 1980, 1990, and 2000. We find that in the early time period, citizen network connections to international society facilitated the formation of and participation in regionally organized TSMOs. Over time, however, regional and global institutional contexts were more predictive of participation in regional TSMOs than were international network ties. Our analysis also uncovered how qualitatively different forms of regionalism translated into significantly different levels of TSMO regionalization. In Europe, where the regional institutional structure is more elaborated than elsewhere in the world, the number of regional TSMOs in which citizens participated greatly outpaced that found elsewhere. Irrespective of international, institutional factors, however, state-level features remained crucial to explaining the development of regional TSMO sectors and the variable levels of participation in them. Citizens in states with restrictions on political rights and civil liberties had significantly lower participation in these organizations in 1990 and 2000. Even so, over time, citizens in states with more ties to global and regional multilateral processes found more ways to overcome this disadvantage and strengthen their participation in regional, transnational civil society. © 2007 SAGE Publications
Heterotic Compactification, An Algorithmic Approach
We approach string phenomenology from the perspective of computational
algebraic geometry, by providing new and efficient techniques for proving
stability and calculating particle spectra in heterotic compactifications. This
is done in the context of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in a
single projective space where we classify positive monad bundles. Using a
combination of analytic methods and computer algebra we prove stability for all
such bundles and compute the complete particle spectrum, including gauge
singlets. In particular, we find that the number of anti-generations vanishes
for all our bundles and that the spectrum is manifestly moduli-dependent.Comment: 36 pages, Late
Potential Added Value of Psychological Capital in Predicting Work Attitudes
Meeting the challenge of effectively managing human resources requires new thinking and approaches. To extend the traditional perspective of economic capital, increasing recognition is being given to human capital and more recently social capital, this article proposes and empirically tests the potential added value that psychological capital may have for employee attitudes of satisfaction and commitment. After first providing the background and theory of PsyCap, this article reports a study of manufacturing employees (N = 74) that found a significant relationship between PsyCap and job satisfaction (r=.373) and organization commitment (r=.313). Importantly, the employees’ PsyCap had a significant added impact over human and social capital on these work attitudes. Future research and practical implications conclude the article
Between Boston and Berlin: American MNCs and the shifting contours of industrial relations in Ireland
peer-reviewedDrawing on detailed qualitative case studies and utilizing a national business system lens, we explore a largely underrepresented debate in the literature, namely the nature of change in a specific but critical element of business systems, that is the industrial relations (IR) institutions of the State and the impact of MNCs thereon. Given the critical mass of US investment in Ireland, we examine how US MNCs manage IR in their Irish subsidiaries, how the policies and practices they pursue have impacted on the Irish IR system, and more broadly their role in shaping the host institutional environment. Overall, we conclude that there is some evidence of change in the IR system, change that we trace indirectly to the US MNC sector. Further, the US MNC sector displays evidence of elements of the management of IR that is clearly at odds with Irish traditions. Thus, in these firms we point to the emergence of a hybrid system of the management of IR and the establishment of new traditions more reflective of US business system.ACCEPTEDpeer-reviewe

Alteration assemblages in Martian meteorites: implications for near-surface processes
The SNC (Shergotty-Nakhla-Chassigny) meteorites have recorded interactions between martian crustal fluids and the parent igneous rocks. The resultant secondary minerals – which comprise up to 1 vol.% of the meteorites – provide information about the timing and nature of hydrous activity and atmospheric processes on Mars. We suggest that the most plausible models for secondary mineral formation involve the evaporation of low temperature (25 – 150 °C) brines. This is consistent with the simple mineralogy of these assemblages – Fe-Mg-Ca carbonates, anhydrite, gypsum, halite, clays – and the chemical fractionation of Ca-to Mg-rich carbonate in ALH84001 "rosettes". Longer-lived, and higher temperature, hydrothermal systems would have caused more silicate alteration than is seen and probably more complex mineral assemblages. Experimental and phase equilibria data on carbonate compositions similar to those present in the SNCs imply low temperatures of formation with cooling taking place over a short period of time (e.g. days). The ALH84001 carbonate also probably shows the effects of partial vapourisation and dehydration related to an impact event post-dating the initial precipitation. This shock event may have led to the formation of sulphide and some magnetite in the Fe-rich outer parts of the rosettes.
Radiometric dating (K-Ar, Rb-Sr) of the secondary mineral assemblages in one of the nakhlites (Lafayette) suggests that they formed between 0 and 670 Myr, and certainly long after the crystallisation of the host igneous rocks. Crystallisation of ALH84001 carbonate took place 0.5 Gyr after the parent rock. These age ranges and the other research on these assemblages suggest that environmental conditions conducive to near-surface liquid water have been present on Mars periodically over the last 1 Gyr. This fluid activity cannot have been continuous over geological time because in that case much more silicate alteration would have taken place in the meteorite parent rocks and the soluble salts would probably not have been preserved.
The secondary minerals could have been precipitated from brines with seawater-like composition, high bicarbonate contents and a weakly acidic nature. The co-existence of siderite (Fe-carbonate) and clays in the nakhlites suggests that the pCO2 level in equilibrium with the parent brine may have been 50 mbar or more. The brines could have originated as flood waters which percolated through the top few hundred meters of the crust, releasing cations from the surrounding parent rocks. The high sulphur and chlorine concentrations of the martian soil have most likely resulted from aeolian redistribution of such aqueously-deposited salts and from reaction of the martian surface with volcanic acid volatiles.
The volume of carbonates in meteorites provides a minimum crustal abundance and is equivalent to 50–250 mbar of CO2 being trapped in the uppermost 200–1000 m of the martian crust. Large fractionations in 18O between igneous silicate in the meteorites and the secondary minerals (30) require formation of the latter below temperatures at which silicate-carbonate equilibration could have taken place (400°C) and have been taken to suggest low temperatures (e.g. 150°C) of precipitation from a hydrous fluid
