The electrical conductivities of the DSS-13 beam-waveguide antenna shroud material and other antenna reflector surface materials
A significant amount of noise temperature can potentially be generated by currently unknown dissipative losses in the beam waveguide (BWG) shroud. The amount of noise temperature contribution from this source is currently being studied. In conjunction with this study, electrical conductivity measurements were made on samples of the DSS-13 BWG shroud material at 8.420 GHz. The effective conductivities of unpainted and painted samples of the BWG shroud were measured to be 0.01 x 10(exp 7) and 0.0036 x 10(exp 7) mhos/m, respectively. This value may be compared with 5.66 x 10(exp 7) mhos/m for high conductivity copper
Renormalization of the N=1 Abelian Super-Chern-Simons Theory Coupled to Parity-Preserving Matter
We analyse the renormalizability of an Abelian N=1 super-Chern-Simons model
coupled to parity-preserving matter on the light of the regularization
independent algebraic method. The model shows to be stable under radiative
corrections and to be gauge anomaly free.Comment: Latex, 7 pages, no figure
Inclusive electron scattering in a relativistic Green function approach
A relativistic Green function approach to the inclusive quasielastic (e,e')
scattering is presented. The single particle Green function is expanded in
terms of the eigenfunctions of the nonhermitian optical potential. This allows
one to treat final state interactions consistently in the inclusive and in the
exclusive reactions. Numerical results for the response functions and the cross
sections for different target nuclei and in a wide range of kinematics are
presented and discussed in comparison with experimental data.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, REVTeX
Quadrupole deformation of deuterons and final state interaction in scattering on tensor polarized deuterons at CEBAF energies
The strength of final state interaction (FSI) between struck proton and
spectator neutron in scattering depends on the alignment of
the deuteron. We study the resulting FSI effects in the tensor analyzing power
in detail and find substantial FSI effects starting at still low missing
momentum p_m \gsim 0.9 fm^{-1}. At larger p_m \gsim 1.5 fm^{-1}, FSI
completely dominates both missing momentum distribution and tensor analyzing
power. We find that to a large extent FSI masks the sensitivity of the tensor
analyzing power to models of the deuteron wave function. For the transversely
polarized deuterons the FSI induced forward-backward asymmetry of the missing
momentum distribution is shown to have a node at precisely the same value of
as the PWIA missing momentum distribution. The position of this node is
not affected by FSI and can be a tool to distinguish experimentally between
different models for the deuteron wave function.Comment: 24 pages, figures available from the authors on reques
The Conformal Manifold of Chern-Simons Matter Theories
We determine perturbatively the conformal manifold of N=2 Chern-Simons matter
theories with the aim of checking in the three dimensional case the general
prescription based on global symmetry breaking, recently introduced. We discuss
in details few remarkable cases like the N=6 ABJM theory and its less
supersymmetric generalizations with/without flavors. In all cases we find
perfect agreement with the predictions of global symmetry breaking
prescription.Comment: 1+17 pages, 1 figure, references adde
A Hybrid Higgs
We construct composite Higgs models admitting a weakly coupled Seiberg dual
description. We focus on the possibility that only the up-type Higgs is an
elementary field, while the down-type Higgs arises as a composite hadron. The
model, based on a confining SQCD theory, breaks supersymmetry and electroweak
symmetry dynamically and calculably. This simultaneously solves the \mu/B_\mu
problem and explains the smallness of the bottom and tau masses compared to the
top mass. The proposal is then applied to a class of models where the same
confining dynamics is used to generate the Standard Model flavor hierarchy by
quark and lepton compositeness. This provides a unified framework for flavor,
supersymmetry breaking and electroweak physics. The weakly coupled dual is used
to explicitly compute the MSSM parameters in terms of a few microscopic
couplings, giving interesting relations between the electroweak and soft
parameters. The RG evolution down to the TeV scale is obtained and salient
phenomenological predictions of this class of "single-sector" models are
discussed.Comment: 56 pages, 7 figures, v2: discussion on FCNCs and references added,

Monophasic synovial sarcoma presenting as a primary ileal mass: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor mainly arising in the peri-articular tissue in young adults. There are few cases reported in other areas.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 29-year-old Saudi woman of Arabian ethnicity with synovial sarcoma arising primarily from the ileum who presented with abdominal pain, a palpable mass and incomplete intestinal obstruction. A literature review was performed to gather information on this rare gastrointestinal tract sarcoma.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although it is a rare tumor of the pre-articular tissues, synovial sarcoma can present, in exceedingly rare cases, in unusual anatomical sites such as the gastrointestinal tract. We believe the reporting of all rare or unexpected presentations of sarcoma will eventually improve our understanding of this relatively unusual malignancy.</p
Effective action of three-dimensional extended supersymmetric matter on gauge superfield background
We study the low-energy effective actions for gauge superfields induced by
quantum N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric matter fields in three-dimensional Minkowski
space. Analyzing the superconformal invariants in the N=2 superspace we propose
a general form of the N=2 gauge invariant and superconformal effective action.
The leading terms in this action are fixed by the symmetry up to the
coefficients while the higher order terms with respect to the Maxwell field
strength are found up to one arbitrary function of quasi-primary N=2
superfields constructed from the superfield strength and its covariant spinor
derivatives. Then we find this function and the coefficients by direct quantum
computations in the N=2 superspace. The effective action of N=4 gauge multiplet
is obtained by generalizing the N=2 effective action.Comment: 1+27 pages; v2: minor corrections, references adde
Retrospective harm benefit analysis of pre-clinical animal research for six treatment interventions
The harm benefit analysis (HBA) is the cornerstone of animal research regulation and is considered to be a key ethical safeguard for animals. The HBA involves weighing the anticipated benefits of animal research against its predicted harms to animals but there are doubts about how objective and accountable this process is.i. To explore the harms to animals involved in pre-clinical animal studies and to assess these against the benefits for humans accruing from these studies; ii. To test the feasibility of conducting this type of retrospective HBA.Data on harms were systematically extracted from a sample of pre-clinical animal studies whose clinical relevance had already been investigated by comparing systematic reviews of the animal studies with systematic reviews of human studies for the same interventions (antifibrinolytics for haemorrhage, bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, corticosteroids for brain injury, Tirilazad for stroke, antenatal corticosteroids for neonatal respiratory distress and thrombolytics for stroke). Clinical relevance was also explored in terms of current clinical practice. Harms were categorised for severity using an expert panel. The quality of the research and its impact were considered. Bateson's Cube was used to conduct the HBA.The most common assessment of animal harms by the expert panel was 'severe'. Reported use of analgesia was rare and some animals (including most neonates) endured significant procedures with no, or only light, anaesthesia reported. Some animals suffered iatrogenic harms. Many were kept alive for long periods post-experimentally but only 1% of studies reported post-operative care. A third of studies reported that some animals died prior to endpoints. All the studies were of poor quality. Having weighed the actual harms to animals against the actual clinical benefits accruing from these studies, and taking into account the quality of the research and its impact, less than 7% of the studies were permissible according to Bateson's Cube: only the moderate bisphosphonate studies appeared to minimise harms to animals whilst being associated with benefit for humans. This is the first time the accountability of the HBA has been systematically explored across a range of pre-clinical animal studies. The regulatory systems in place when these studies were conducted failed to safeguard animals from severe suffering or to ensure that only beneficial, scientifically rigorous research was conducted. Our findings indicate a pressing need to: i. review regulations, particularly those that permit animals to suffer severe harms; ii. reform the processes of prospectively assessing pre-clinical animal studies to make them fit for purpose; and iii. systematically evaluate the benefits of pre-clinical animal research to permit a more realistic assessment of its likely future benefits
