    Environmental shocks and agricultural revenue: Secondary data analysis of 2018/19 Nigerian general household survey

    The study was designed to investigate the link between environmental shocks and agricultural revenue using secondary data obtained from the 2018/2019 Nigerian general household survey. Variables were subjected to correlational analysis using Spearman correlation coefficient. Results indicate that 0.8% and 6.6% of Nigerian households experienced harvest destruction by fire and flooding respectively. The average amount of money accrued from the sale of unprocessed and processed crops in Nigeria were <strike>N</strike>112,774 and <strike>N</strike>44,593 respectively. Destruction of harvest by fire is negatively but insignificantly related to mean total sales of  unprocessed crops (r = -.268, p > 0.05) while it is negatively, strongly and significantly related to mean total sales of processed crops (r = -.996, p < 0.05). Flooding that caused harvest failure is negatively but insignificantly related to mean total sales of unprocessed crops (r = -.217, p > 0.05) and processed crops (r = -.300, p > 0.05). Destruction of harvest by fire is the single most vital determinant of reduced earnings from sales of processed crops. Empirical credence afforded the idea that environmental shocks and agricultural revenue are conflicting social realities in Nigeria.     Socio-demographic associates of perceived social support among crop farmers in Ido local government area, Ibadan, Nigeria

    This study was designed to assess perceived social support (PSS) and the socio-demographic characteristics associated with same among crop farmers in Ido LGA of Oyo State, Nigeria. The design is a farmer-targeted cross-sectional survey. Primary data were collected among 215 randomly selected respondents using structured questionnaire, which were administered via structured interview. Cross-tabulation and chi-square were used to show distributions and significance of associations between pairs of socio-demographic characteristics and levels of perceived social support. Contingency co-efficient was used to assess the extent of significant associations. Results indicated that high, moderate and marginal levels of social support were enjoyed by 40.9%, 30.7% and 28.4% of respondents, respectively. Sex and age were significantly associated with levels of social support (p < 0.05) but marital status and education were not (p > 0.05). Being female and being of decreased age are significantly associated with benefiting higher level of social support. Marital status and education are inconsequential factors in accruing social support among farmers in the study area. Social support is fairly palpable among farmers, but deliberate efforts to instigate its manifestation will open farmers to reaping the enormous advantages that social support offers.     Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases worldwide. It has a significant impact on oral health and subsequently the individualā€™s quality of life. However, optimal regeneration of periodontal tissues, using current treatments, has yet to be achieved. Peptide self-assembly has provided a step-change in nanobiotechnology and regenerative medicine fields. Our aim was to investigate the effects of a self-assembling peptide (SAP; P11-4) on periodontal regeneration in a preclinical model. Twenty-six bilateral maxillary critical-sized periodontal defects were created surgically in 13 rats. Defects on one side of the mouth were filled with P11-4 hydrogel; the contra-lateral defect was untreated (control). Rats were sacrificed immediately post-surgery (time 0) and after 2 and 4 weeks. Retrieved maxillae were processed for histological, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometric assessments. The results of histological analysis showed greater organization of periodontal fibers in defects treated with P11-4, at both time points, when compared to untreated defects. Histomorphometry showed that treated defects had both a significant increase in functional periodontal ligament length and a reduction in epithelial down growth after 4 weeks. At 2 weeks, treated defects showed a significant increase in expression of osteocalcin and osteoprotegerin as judged by immunohistochemistry. Also, a significantly higher osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio was shown in treated defects. In conclusion, the results demonstrated enhanced regeneration of periodontal tissues when SAP P11-4 was used to fill periodontal defects in rats. The findings of this study suggest that SAP P11-4 is a promising novel candidate for periodontal regenerative therapy. Further investigations are required for optimization before clinical use

    Pelvic actinomycosis presenting as a malignant pelvic mass: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Pelvic actinomycosis constitutes 3% of all human actinomycosis infections. It is usually insidious, and is often mistaken for other conditions such as diverticulitis, abscesses, inflammatory bowel disease and malignant tumors, presenting a diagnostic challenge pre-operatively; it is identified post-operatively in most cases. Here we present a case that presented as pelvic malignancy and was diagnosed as pelvic actinomycosis post-operatively.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 48-year-old Caucasian Turkish woman presented to our clinic with a three-month history of abdominal pain, weight loss and difficulty in defecation. She had used an intra-uterine device for 16 years, however it had recently been removed. The rectosigmoidoscopy revealed narrowing of the lumen at 12 cm due to a mass lesion either in the wall or due to an extrinsic lesion that prevented the passage of the endoscope. On examination, there was no gynecological pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass, measuring 5.5 Ɨ 4 cm attached to the rectum posterior to the uterus. The ureter on that side was dilated. Surgically there was a pelvic mass adhered to the rectum and uterine adnexes, measuring 10 Ɨ 12 cm. It originated from uterine adnexes, particularly ones from the left side and formed a conglomerated mass with the uterus and nearby organs; the left ureter was also dilated due to the pelvic mass. Because of concomitant tubal abscess formation and difficulty in dissection planes, total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salphingo-oophorectomy was performed (our patient was 48 years old and had completed her childbearing period). The cytology revealed inflammatory cells with aggregates of <it>Actinomyces</it>. Penicillin therapy was given for six months without any complication.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Pelvic actinomycosis should always be considered in patients with a pelvic mass especially in ones using intra-uterine devices, and who have a history of appendectomy, tonsillectomy or dental infection. Surgeons should be aware of this infection in order to avoid excessive surgical procedures.</p

    Quantitative cross-species extrapolation between humans and fish: The case of the anti-depressant fluoxetine

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Fish are an important model for the pharmacological and toxicological characterization of human pharmaceuticals in drug discovery, drug safety assessment and environmental toxicology. However, do fish respond to pharmaceuticals as humans do? To address this question, we provide a novel quantitative cross-species extrapolation approach (qCSE) based on the hypothesis that similar plasma concentrations of pharmaceuticals cause comparable target-mediated effects in both humans and fish at similar level of biological organization (Read-Across Hypothesis). To validate this hypothesis, the behavioural effects of the anti-depressant drug fluoxetine on the fish model fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) were used as test case. Fish were exposed for 28 days to a range of measured water concentrations of fluoxetine (0.1, 1.0, 8.0, 16, 32, 64 Ī¼g/L) to produce plasma concentrations below, equal and above the range of Human Therapeutic Plasma Concentrations (HTPCs). Fluoxetine and its metabolite, norfluoxetine, were quantified in the plasma of individual fish and linked to behavioural anxiety-related endpoints. The minimum drug plasma concentrations that elicited anxiolytic responses in fish were above the upper value of the HTPC range, whereas no effects were observed at plasma concentrations below the HTPCs. In vivo metabolism of fluoxetine in humans and fish was similar, and displayed bi-phasic concentration-dependent kinetics driven by the auto-inhibitory dynamics and saturation of the enzymes that convert fluoxetine into norfluoxetine. The sensitivity of fish to fluoxetine was not so dissimilar from that of patients affected by general anxiety disorders. These results represent the first direct evidence of measured internal dose response effect of a pharmaceutical in fish, hence validating the Read-Across hypothesis applied to fluoxetine. Overall, this study demonstrates that the qCSE approach, anchored to internal drug concentrations, is a powerful tool to guide the assessment of the sensitivity of fish to pharmaceuticals, and strengthens the translational power of the cross-species extrapolation

    X-ray emission from isolated neutron stars

    X-ray emission is a common feature of all varieties of isolated neutron stars (INS) and, thanks to the advent of sensitive instruments with good spectroscopic, timing, and imaging capabilities, X-ray observations have become an essential tool in the study of these objects. Non-thermal X-rays from young, energetic radio pulsars have been detected since the beginning of X-ray astronomy, and the long-sought thermal emission from cooling neutron star's surfaces can now be studied in detail in many pulsars spanning different ages, magnetic fields, and, possibly, surface compositions. In addition, other different manifestations of INS have been discovered with X-ray observations. These new classes of high-energy sources, comprising the nearby X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars, the Central Compact Objects in supernova remnants, the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, and the Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters, now add up to several tens of confirmed members, plus many candidates, and allow us to study a variety of phenomena unobservable in "standard'' radio pulsars.Comment: Chapter to be published in the book of proceedings of the 1st Sant Cugat Forum on Astrophysics, "ICREA Workshop on the high-energy emission from pulsars and their systems", held in April, 201
