Specific immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis in Italy: The patients' points of view

    Get PDF
Specific immunotherapy (SIT) is the unique causal treatment for allergy, but its use is quite limited. A perspective, cross-sectional telephone interview survey was carried out in Italy to evaluate the characteristics of 500 patients with allergic rhinitis (250 of whom treated with SIT). Relevant differences were found concerning therapeutic management of allergic rhinitis, mainly regarding the use of drugs and co-morbidities. The allergist is the most important consultant who prescribes SIT. This study therefore provides evidence that the course of allergic rhinitis may depend on the therapy prescribed by and the level of allergy awareness of the physician

multiaxial fatigue behavior of additive manufactured ti 6al 4v under in phase stresses

Abstract The development and application of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies is constantly increasing. However, in many applications, AM parts are subjected to multiaxial loads, arising from operating conditions and/or complex geometries. These make AM components serious candidates for crack initiation and propagation mechanisms. Therefore, a deep understanding of the multiaxial fatigue behavior of AM parts is essential in many applications where durability and reliability are core issues. In this study, multiaxial fatigue of Ti6Al4V thin-walled tubular specimens, made by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process, was investigated by combined axial-torsional loads. Infrared thermography (IR) was also used to investigate the temperature evolution during fatigue tests. Results highlighted different damage mechanisms and failure modes in the low- and high-cycle fatigue regimes

Multiaxial fatigue behavior of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V alloy: Axial–torsional proportional loads

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are under constant development and selective laser melting (SLM) is among the most promising ones. However, widespread use of AM techniques in many industries is limited by the different/unusual mechanical properties of AM metallic parts, with respect to traditionally processed ones, especially when dealing with complex fatigue loading conditions. In fact, crack formation and propagation mechanisms are mainly affected by the development of internal defects, residual stresses, and microstructural changes. This is actually one of the major issues the materials engineering community is facing today. In many applications, AM components are subjected to multiaxial fatigue loads, arising from operating conditions and/or from complex geometries, that unavoidably generate crack initiation and propagation mechanisms. The aim of this study is to investigate the multiaxial fatigue behavior of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V samples, made by SLM. Fatigue tests, combining proportional axial and torsional loads, were performed on thin-walled tubular specimens. Full-field measurement techniques, such as the infrared thermography and digital image correlation, were also used to capture temperature and strain evolutions, at both local scales and global scales. Fatigue results highlighted damage mechanisms, and failure modes are strongly related to the applied stress level

Large cryptic genomic rearrangements with apparently normal karyotypes detected by array-CGH.

Background: Conventional karyotyping (550 bands resolution) is able to identify chromosomal aberrations >5-10 Mb, which represent a known cause of intellectual disability/developmental delay (ID/DD) and/or multiple congenital anomalies (MCA). Array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array-CGH) has increased the diagnostic yield of 15-20%. Results: In a cohort of 700 ID/DD cases with or without MCA, including 15 prenatal diagnoses, we identified a subgroup of seven patients with a normal karyotype and a large complex rearrangement detected by array-CGH (at least 6, and up to 18 Mb). FISH analysis could be performed on six cases and showed that rearrangements were translocation derivatives, indistinguishable from a normal karyotype as they involved a similar band pattern and size. Five were inherited from a parent with a balanced translocation, whereas two were apparently de novo. Genes spanning the rearrangements could be associated with some phenotypic features in three cases (case 3: DOCK8; case 4: GATA3, AKR1C4; case 6: AS/PWS deletion, CHRNA7), and in two, likely disease genes were present (case 5: NR2F2, TP63, IGF1R; case 7: CDON). Three of our cases were prenatal diagnoses with an apparently normal karyotype. Conclusions: Large complex rearrangements of up to 18 Mb, involving chromosomal regions with similar size and band appearance may be overlooked by conventional karyotyping. Array-CGH allows a precise chromosomal diagnosis and recurrence risk definition, further confirming this analysis as a first tier approach to clarify molecular bases of ID/DD and/or MCA. In prenatal tests, array-CGH is confirmed as an important tool to avoid false negative results due to karyotype intrinsic limit of detection

Catching allergy by a simple questionnaire

Background: Identifying allergic rhinitis requires allergy testing, but the first-line referral for rhinitis are usually primary care physicians (PCP), who are not familiar with such tests. The availability of easy and simple tests to be used by PCP to suggest allergy should be very useful. Methods: The Respiratory Allergy Prediction (RAP) test, based on 9 questions and previously validated by a panel of experts, was evaluated in this study. Results: An overall number of 401 patients (48.6% males, age range 14-62 years) with respiratory symptoms was included. Of them, 89 (22.2%) showed negative results to SPT, while 312 (77.8%) had at least one positive result to SPT. Cohen's kappa coefficient showed that all questions had an almost perfect excellent agreement between pre and post-test. The algorithm of decision-tree growth Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector showed that answering yes to the question 4 (Your nasal/ocular complains do usually start or worsen during the spring?), 6 (Did you ever had cough or shortness of breath, even during exercise?) and 8 (Do you use nasal sprays frequently?) gave a probability to have a positive SPT of 85%. Conclusions: These findings show that RAP test can be proposed as an useful tool to be used by physician other than allergists when evaluating patients with rhinitis, suggesting the need of allergy testing

Status of the radio receiver system of the Sardina Radio Telescope

    Get PDF
In this article, we present the design and performances of the radio receiver system installed at the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The three radio receivers planned for the first light of the Sardinian Telescope have been installed in three of the four possible focus positions. A dual linear polarization coaxial receiver that covers two frequency bands, the P-band (305-410 MHz) and the L-band (1.3-1.8 GHz) is installed at the primary focus. A mono-feed that covers the High C-band (5.7-7.7 GHz) is installed at the beam waveguide foci. A multi-beam (seven beams) K-band receiver (18- 26.5 GHz) is installed at the Gregorian focus. Finally, we give an overview about the radio receivers, which under test and under construction and which are needed for expanding the telescope observing capabilities
