Reciprocity : where art meets the community : action research in response to artistic encounters and relationships
This practice-led research project examines some of the factors and issues facing artists working in the public domain who wish to engage with the community as audience. Using the methodology of action research, the three major creative projects in this study use art as a socio-political tool with the aim of providing an effective vehicle for broadening awareness, understanding forms of social protest and increasing tolerance for diversity. The three projects: Floodline November 7, 2004, Look in, Look out, and The Urban Terrorist Project, dealt with issues of marginalisation of communities, audiences and graffiti artists respectively. The artist/researcher is outlined as both creator and collaborator in the work. Processes included ephemeral elements, such as temporary installation and performance, as well as interactive elements that encouraged direct audience involvement as part of the work. In addition to the roles of creator and collaborator, both of which included audience as well as artist, the presence of an outside entity was evident. Whether local, legal authorities or prevailing attitudes, outside entities had an unavoidable impact on the processes and outcomes of the work. Each project elicited a range of responses from their respective audiences; however, the overarching concept of reciprocity was seen to be the crucial factor in conception, artistic methods and outcomes
Electrochemical incineration of organic pollutants: effect of the nature of the pollutants and of the temperature
The electrochemical oxidation of some organic pollutants, including three carboxylic acids (oxalic, formic and
maleic), at boron doped diamond (BDD) and DSA anodes, using galvanostatic alimentation, was investigated in
order to study the effect of the temperature and of the nature of the pollutants on the process. In incineration
electrolyses, the performances of the process in terms of carboxylic acid conversion and current efficiency
dramatically depend on the adopted operative conditions. The abatement of the organic pollutant depends on the
nature of the carboxylic acid. Quite interestingly, the opposite effect of the nature of the substrate on the
performances of the process was observed at BDD and DSA anodes

Articular cartilage lesions, with their inherent limited healing potential, are hard to treat and remain a challenging problem for orthopedic surgeons. Despite the development of several treatment strategies, the real potential of each procedure in terms of clinical benefit and effects on the joint degeneration processes is not clear.
Aim of this PhD project was to evaluate the results, both in terms of clinical and imaging improvement, of new promising procedures developed to address the challenging cartilage pathology. Several studies have been followed in parallel and completed over the 3-year PhD, and are reported in detail in the following pages. In particular, the studies have been focused on the evaluation of the treatment indications of a scaffold based autologous chondrocyte implantation procedure, documenting its results for the classic indication of focal traumatic lesions, as well as its use for the treatment of more challenging patients, older, with degenerative lesions, or even as salvage procedure for more advanced stages of articular degeneration. The second field of study involved the analysis of the results obtained treating lesions of the articular surface with a new biomimetic osteochondral scaffold, which showed promise for the treatment of defects where the entire osteochondral unit is involved. Finally, a new minimally invasive procedure based on the use of growth factors derived from autologous platelets has been explored, showing results and underlining indicatios for the treatment of cartilage lesions and different stages of joint degeneration.
These studies shed some light on the potential of the evaluated procedures, underlining good results as well as limits, they give some indications on the most appropriate candidates for their application, and document the current knowledge on cartilage treatment procedures suggesting the limitations that need to be addressed by future studies to improve the management of cartilage lesions
Sulfurous thermal waters stimulate the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells - An in vitro study.
Strategies aimed at delaying the onset of bone tissue degeneration and the resulting skeletal fragility are key to decrease the risk of bone fracture correlated to ageing. The therapeutic properties of sulfurous thermal waters (STWs), rich in hydrogen sulfide (H2S), have been claimed for centuries. However, the direct regulation of bone cells by STWs has not been investigated yet. Here we aimed at analyzing the effect of STWs on cultured human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) derived from bone tissue. Two concentrations of STWs from 2 health spa centers in Italy (here named STW-1 and STW-2) containing, respectively, high and moderate quantities of H2S, were added to the culture media. Cytotoxicity and osteogenic differentiation were evaluated. We provided first evidence that treatment of hMSCs with STWs results in a sharp increase in intracellular H2S content, coherent with the different concentrations of H2S, thereby reveling that STWs-released H2S is internalized by cells. STWs treatment significantly induced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In particular, mineral apposition was increased with a similar pattern by the two STWs, while mRNA expression of osteogenic markers (BSP, OC, RUNX-2, OPN) was differently affected. Only STW-2 induced a significant, dose-dependent increase in these gene expression. These findings support the rationale for the use of STWs as a complementary treatment of bone wasting diseases
High-Entropy Visual IdentiïŹcation for Touch Screen Devices
We exhibit a system for improving the quality of user-derived keying material on touch-screen devices. We allow a device to recover previously generated, highly entropic data suitable for use as (part of) a strong secret key from a userâs act of identifying to the device. Our system uses visual cryptography [22], using no additional electronics and no memorization on the part of the user. Instead, we require the use of a transparency overlaid on the touch-screen. Our scheme is similar to the identification scheme of [23] but tailored for constrained, touch-screen displays
Secretome and Extracellular Vesicles as New Biological Therapies for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review
Secretome and extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered a promising option to exploit mesenchymal stem cellsâ (MSCs) properties to address knee osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this systematic review was to analyze both the in vitro and in vivo literature, in order to understand the potential of secretome and EVs as a minimally invasive injective biological approach. A systematic review of the literature was performed on PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to 31 August 2019. Twenty studies were analyzed; nine in vitro, nine in vitro and in vivo, and two in vivo. The analysis showed an increasing interest in this emerging field, with overall positive findings. Promising in vitro results were documented in terms of enhanced cell proliferation, reduction of inflammation, and down-regulation of catabolic pathways while promoting anabolic processes. The positive in vitro findings were confirmed in vivo, with studies showing positive effects on cartilage, subchondral bone, and synovial tissues in both OA and osteochondral models. However, several aspects remain to be clarified, such as the different effects induced by EVs and secretome, which is the most suitable cell source and production protocol, and the identification of patients who may benefit more from this new biological approach for knee OA treatment
High Prevalence of Pain Sensitization in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Meta-Analysis with Meta-Regression
Objective The aim of this meta-analysis was to study the evidence on pain sensitization in knee osteoarthritis (OA), providing a quantitative synthesis of its prevalence and impact. Factors associated with pain sensitization were also investigated. Methods Meta-analysis; PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Central Register (CENTRAL), and Web of Science were searched on February 2021. Level I to level IV studies evaluating the presence of pain sensitization in patients with symptomatic knee OA, documented through a validated method (questionnaires or quantitative sensory testing), were included. The primary outcome was the prevalence of pain sensitization. Factors influencing the prevalence were also evaluated, as well as differences in terms of pain thresholds between knee OA patients and healthy controls. Results Fifty-three articles including 7,117 patients were included. The meta-analysis of proportion documented a prevalence of pain sensitization of 20% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 16%-26%) with a significant heterogeneity of results (I-2 = 89%, P < 0.001). The diagnostic tool used was the main factor influencing the documented prevalence of pain sensitization (P = 0.01). Knee OA patients presented higher pain sensitivity compared with healthy controls, both in terms of local pressure pain threshold (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -1.00, 95% CI = -1.67 to -0.32, P = 0.007) and distant pressure pain threshold (SMD = -0.54, 95% CI = -0.76 to -0.31, P < 0.001). Conclusions Knee OA pain presents features that are consistent with a significant degree of pain sensitization. There is a high heterogeneity in the reported results, mainly based on the diagnostic tool used. The identification of the best methods to detect pain sensitization is warranted to correctly evaluate and manage symptoms of patients affected by knee OA. Registration: PROSPERO CRD42019123347
