In this paper, written in the framework of Text Linguistics, the Author examines independent appositive relations. Specifically, she defines their contribution to the construction of the architecture of discourse through a comparison with other denotatively similar linguistic structures. In addition, by employing an analysis of the morphosyntactic, intonational and punctuation levels, the Author identifies the criterion that differenciates restrictive relatives from appositive relatives. Appositive relatives form an independent minimal text unit that can work either at the informative or at the utterance level. Through this comparison with other linguistic structures, the Author then determines the specific contribution of appositive relative clauses to the construction of text in its thematic, logico-argumentative and illocutive- interactive dimensions. In doing so, she is particularly attentive to the different interpretations that arise from variations in distribution and punctuation.In questo articolo, che si colloca nell’ambito della linguistica del testo, l’Autrice prende in esame le subordinate relative appositive. L’obiettivo sta, più precisamente, nel definire il contributo che esse offrono alla costruzione dell’architettura del discorso, attraverso un confronto con altre strutture linguistiche denotativamente analoghe. L’analisi dei livelli morfosintattico, intonativo e interpuntivo permette di individuare i criteri decisivi di distinzione tra relative restrittive e relative appositive, e di affermare, in linea con Scarano (2002), che queste ultime realizzano sistematicamente almeno una Unità Testuale Minimale, che può operare a livello informativo (come Appendice) oppure a livello di Enunciato. Sempre sullo sfondo del paragone con strutture linguistiche alternative, l’Autrice definisce in seguito qual è la specificità ‘interpretativa’ delle relative appositive nelle dimensioni tematica, logico-argomentativa e illocutiva-interattiva della costruzione del testo. The purpose of this paper is to identify the standards of judicial control over administrative activity developed by the Austrian Administrative Court between the late XIX and early XX centuries. This analysis will highlight the considerable development of administrative law as early as the end of the nineteenth century. Indeed, even at that time the Austrian Administrative Court had elaborated a series of principles for administrative action on the basis of which to carry out judicial review. Aperture al gerundio: valori modali e configurazioni informative

Si dice che il gerundio modale non possa mai essere anteposto alla reggente (per es. – da leggere con intonazione piana – *zoppicando, camminava) e che ciò abbia una spiegazione sintattica unita a una spiegazione logico-semantica. La realtà della comunicazione linguistica mostra che tale restrizione è meno sistematica di quanto si creda. A partire da questo dato, mostreremo anzitutto che gli strumenti dell’analisi informativa dell’enunciato sono in grado sia di spiegare le restrizioni d’impiego osservabili – assorbendo il dato sintattico-semantico – sia di spiegare perché in certi casi la soluzione sintatticamente marcata sia in effetti quella preferibile. In un secondo momento mostreremo che il paradigma informativo è in grado di trattare restrizioni e potenzialità d’impiego di un costrutto gerundiale in sé ancora più marcato, quello che al gerundio modale anteposto fa seguire una reggente presentativa (per es. – da leggere con intonazione piana – *zoppicando, camminava Giovanni). Tale costruzione alle restrizioni sintattico-semantiche che pesano sull’anteposizione del gerundio aggiunge infatti la difficoltà generale della coreferenza di un soggetto sottinteso con un soggetto in Focus.Se dice que el gerundio modal no se puede anteponer nunca a la regente (por ej., leído sin realce prosódico, *zoppicando, camminava) y que esto tiene una explicación sintáctica y una explicación lógicosemántica. Apartir de este dato, mostraremos en primer lugar que los instrumentos del análisis informativo del enunciado son capaces de explicar tanto las restricciones de empleo observables – absorbiendo el dato sintáctico-semántico – como por qué en ciertos casos la solución sintácticamente marcada sea, en efecto, la preferible. Mostraremos, además, que el paradigma informativo es capaz de tratar restricciones y posibilidades de empleo de una construcción de gerundio aún más marcada todavía, como es aquella en la que al gerundio modal antepuesto le sigue una regente presentativa (por ej., leído sin realce prosódico, *zoppicando, camminava Giovanni). Tal construcción añade, en efecto, a las restricciones sintáctico-semánticas que inciden sobre la anteposición del gerundio, la dificultad general de la correferencia de un sujeto sobreentendido con un sujeto en foco

The Power to Tax without Due Process of Law

This paper provides a case-study analysis that allows the highlighting of any inconsistencies or unequal treatment in adjudication procedures in tax matters, a sector particularly interesting and fruitful for an investigation concerning the tricky balance between the requirements of taxation and the protection of the freedoms and rights of the individual. First of all, tax is not a subject of harmonisation, so the procedural autonomy of the states is even more marked insofar as it is grafted on to a standardisation that varies greatly between the various states. Moreover, in this case European law interfaces with a traditional sort of administration rather than with a national regulatory authority. The methodology used is inductive, starting from an empirical analysis which considers both normative data, and a number of important and recent judgments of the Court of Justice, selected using the criterion of the invoked applicability of the right to be heard in disputes in tax matters. Both national proceedings in implementation of EU law, and composite proceedings in which tax administrations from various Member States intervene are included, in order to highlight any discrepancies related to the type of proceedings adopted

A thermo-responsive, self-assembling biointerface for on demand release of surface-immobilised proteins

Dedicated chemistries for on-demand capture and release of biomolecules at the solid-liquid interface are required for applications in drug delivery, for the synthesis of switchable surfaces used in analytical devices and for the assembly of next-generation biomaterials with complex architectures and functions. Here we report the engineering of a binary self-assembling polypeptide system for reversible protein capture, immobilisation and controlled thermo-responsive release from a solid surface. The first element of the binary system is a universal protein substrate immobilised on a solid surface. This protein is bio-inspired by the neuronal SNAP25, which is the protein involved in the docking and fusion of synaptic vesicles to the synaptic membrane. The second element is an artificial chimeric protein engineered to include distinct domains from three different proteins: Syntaxin, VAMP and SNAP25. These native proteins constitute the machinery dedicated to vesicle trafficking in eukaryotes. We removed approximately 70% of native protein sequence from these proteins and constructed a protein chimera capable of high affinity interaction and self-assembly with immobilised substrate. The interaction of the two parts of the engineered protein complex is strong but fully-reversible and therefore the chimera can be recombinantly fused as a tag to a protein of interest, to allow spontaneous assembly and stimuli-sensitive release from the surface upon heating at a predetermined temperature. Two thermo-responsive tags are reported: the first presents remarkable thermal stability with melting temperature of the order of 80°C; the second disassembles at a substantially lower temperature of about 45°C. The latter is a promising candidate for remote-controlled localised delivery of therapeutic proteins, as physiologically tolerable local increase of temperatures in the 40-45°C range can be achieved using magnetic fields, infra-red light or focused ultrasound. Importantly, these two novel polypeptides provide a broader blueprint for the engineering of future functional proteins with predictable folding and response to external stimuli

Per una valutazione delle "patologie testuali" dell'italiano amministrativo svizzero

L’articolo si inserisce nel quadro di una ricerca collettiva vòlta a valutare la qualità dell’italiano istituzionale elvetico. Si affrontano qui i comunicati stampa del Cantone Ticino e della Confederazione nell’era COVID. Dopo aver osservato che le “patologie” riscontrate vanno ricondotte a questioni grammaticali, varietistiche o testuali, ci si concentra su queste ultime. Se ne propone una sistemazione ampiamente esemplificata, affrontando problematiche relative alla segmentazione del testo nelle sue unità costitutive, alla loro gerarchizzazione e alla loro connessione entro i due piani principali della strutturazione testuale, quello logico-argomentativo e tematico-referenziale. The paper is part of a collective research aimed at assessing the quality of Swiss institutional Italian. It deals with the press releases of the Canton of Ticino and the Swiss Confederation in the COVID era. After noting that the “pathologies” encountered can be traced back to grammatical, varietal, or textual issues, the focus is set on the latter. A broadly exemplified account is proposed, addressing issues relating to the segmentation of the text into its constituent units, to their hierarchy and to their connection within the two main levels of text structure, i.e. the logical-argumentative level and the thematic-referential level
