JEL Classification System: M12 - Personnel Management; M51 - Firm Employment Decisions; Promotions. The research tries to determine which impression management strategies are used by middle-rank police officers in the construction and in the management of their professional image as well as its influence in the range of their career success. The moderator level of perceived discrepancy, between the current professional image and the desired professional image and selfmonitoring is also analysed. The methodology uses quantitative data acquired from an internal survey applied to 97 middle and senior rank police officers. The results we achieved show that more attention should be given to the study of impression management strategies as it seems to be associated with the perception of professional fulfilment, with the severity of the discrepancy of professional image and the auto-monitoring level. The results suggest that this professional group mainly use defensive impression management strategies to the (re)construction or rehabilitation of their professional image, that allows them to be accepted and recognised by peers, lower ranks, and commanders. A significantly marginal moderated discrepancy was found concerning justification, selfhandicapping and apologies in its relation to the impression management strategies and the perceived professional success. However, we could find a direct and significant effect, of exemplariness, disclaimers, apologies and self-handicapping tactics concerning professional success. As such, associated to a predominant use of exemplariness and disclaimers tactics are a higher success perception of the professional career (explains almost 40% of success perception). Finally, we also found low levels of professional fulfilment associated to a major use of apologies and self-handicapping tactics

The antifungal activity of essential oils of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Apiaceae), ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiberaceae), mint (Mentha piperita L., Lamiaceae) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L., Lamiaceae) was evaluated against mycotoxin producers Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. High Resolution Gas Chromatography was applied to analyze chemical constituents of essential oils. The effect of different concentrations of essential oils was determined by solid medium diffusion assay. Mycelial growth and sporulation were determined for each essential oil at the concentrations established by solid medium diffusion assay. At the fifth, seventh and ninth days the mycelial diameter (Ø mm) and spore production were also determined. FUN-1 staining was performed to assess cell viability after broth macrodilution assay. Trans-anethole, zingiberene, menthol and thymol are the major component of essential oils of fennel, ginger, mint and thyme, respectively. The effective concentrations for fennel, ginger, mint and thyme were 50, 80, 50 and 50% (oil/DMSO; v/v), respectively. The four essential oils analysed in this study showed antifungal effect. Additionally, FUN-1 staining showed to be a suitable method to evaluate cell viability of potential mycotoxigenic fungi A. flavus and A. parasiticus after treatment with essential oils. The authors are grateful to the colleagues from Laboratory of EPAMIG and Microbiology DEB/UFLA and the Micoteca da Universidade do Minho, Center for Biological Engineering, UMINHO for their support to perform this work. A special aknowledgment is also due to the FAPEMIG and MUM-UMINHO for the financial support of bench work and to CAPES for granting the first author with a PhD scholarship
