The effects of altered distances between obstacles on the jump kinematics and apparent joint angulations of large agility dogs
Canine agility is a rapidly growing sport in the UK. However, there is a paucity of scientific research examining jump kinematics and associated health and welfare implications of the discipline. The aim of this research was to examine differences in jump kinematics and apparent joint angulation of large (> 431 mm at the withers) agility dogs (n = 54), when the distance between hurdles was altered (3.6 m, 4 m and 5 m apart) and to determine how level of skill impacted upon jump kinematics. Significant differences were observed for both the take-off (P < 0.001) and landing distances (P < 0.001) between the 3.6 m, 4 m and 5 m distances. Further differences were observed when level of skill was controlled for; take-off (F[3,55] = 5.686, P = 0.002) and landing (F[3,55] = 7.552, P < 0.001) distances differed at the 3.6 m distance, as did the take-off distance at the 4 m hurdle distance (F[3,50] = 6.168, P = 0.001). Take-off and landing speeds differed for hurdle distances (P < 0.001) and level of skill (P < 0.001). There were significant differences in apparent neck angle during take-off and landing (P < 0.001), lumbar spine angles during take-off, bascule and landing (P < 0.01), and in shoulder angles during the bascule phase (P < 0.05). The results indicate that agility dogs alter their jumping patterns to accommodate the spacing between hurdles, which ultimately may impact long term health and welfare due to altered kinematics

and energy efficiency can be both maximized and where they constitute

Semantic-based policy engineering for autonomic systems
This paper presents some important directions in the use of ontology-based semantics in achieving the vision of Autonomic Communications. We examine the requirements of Autonomic Communication with a focus on the demanding needs of ubiquitous computing environments, with an emphasis on the requirements shared with Autonomic Computing. We observe that ontologies provide a strong mechanism for addressing the heterogeneity in user task requirements, managed resources, services and context. We then present two complimentary approaches that exploit ontology-based knowledge in support of autonomic communications: service-oriented models for policy engineering and dynamic semantic queries using content-based networks. The paper concludes with a discussion of the major research challenges such approaches raise
Optimising selective deuteration of proteins for 2D 1H NMR detection and assignment studies Application to the Phe residues of Lactobacillus casei dihydrofolate reductase
AbstractA selectively deuterated dihydrofolate reductase from L. casei has been prepared containing partially deuterated aromatic amino acids. This provides simplified 2D NMR spectra and allows signals from all 8 Phe residues to be identified. The pattern of deuteration is such that (i) the only cross-peaks detected in the aromatic region of the 2D COSY spectrum are those between the Phe 2â˛,6Ⲡand 3â˛,5Ⲡprotons and (ii) chemical shift degeneracy in the aromatic region is removed thus allowing unambiguous assignment of cross-peaks in 2D NOESY spectra required for specific assignment purposes

Reporting on novel complex intervention development for adults with social communication impairments after acquired brain injury
Purpose: Interventions are often poorly described in published controlled trials, with relatively little information regarding intervention development, content and fidelity. This makes it difficult to conduct replication studies, interpret and compare findings across studies and for therapists to deliver the intervention in clinical practice. Complete reporting of interventions (including fidelity) is now recommended for treatment studies, and this standardised approach is achieved using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR). The aim of this paper is to describe the multi-phase process of developing a novel intervention for adults with acquired brain injury (ABI), and report on the findings from involving practicing therapists in this process.
Methods: Phase 1 involved a review of relevant literature and specifying the intervention as a prototype intervention manual. Phase 2 comprised a focus group with eight practicing therapists exploring their experiences and perceptions of the intervention, potential active components, and essential elements; it also included review of the prototype manual. Data from the focus group discussion was transcribed and analysed thematically. Phase 3 investigated actual fidelity of the intervention undertaken, achieved by observers viewing videoed sessions and appraising against the fidelity checklist, which was then analysed using Cohenâs kappa.
Results: Project-based intervention was defined as having six essential elements: a project or tangible end product focus; group-based intervention; individualised communication-based goals; communication partner involvement; acknowledgement and support of participantsâ cognitive ability; and consideration and plan to address impaired awareness. Analysis of focus group data revealed four themes of essential elements; group context; therapeutic skills; and manual core components and informed the development of a fidelity checklist with 13 essential and 6 desirable criteria. Fidelity assessed using percent agreement was acceptable for almost all rater pairs; where significant, Kappa coefficients had values ranging from poor to excellent (k=0.34 â 1.0) depending on rater pair and session.
Discussion: The TIDieR framework provided a clear systematic approach for the complete description and reporting of a complex communication intervention for people with ABI. This paper comprehensively described the development and manualisation of an intervention in collaboration with practicing therapists which can be used for future testing. In addition, the process undertaken has the potential to inform rehabilitation researchers in other fields on the development of complex interventions
Romantic jealousy and relationship satisfaction: the costs of rumination
The experience of romantic jealousy and its influence on relationship outcomes is unclear. Romantic jealousy is often associated with damaging effects; on the other hand, jealousy is linked to positive relationship outcomes such as increased commitment. In this study, we aimed to address inconsistencies in previous research by proposing rumination as a mediator between romantic jealousy (cognitive jealousy and surveillance behaviors) and relationship dissatisfaction. We also aimed to extend our understanding of behavioral responses to jealousy, and in particular, partner surveillance and its link to relational dissatisfaction by proposing a research question. Overall, there were two paths to relationship dissatisfaction: Cognitive jealousy and surveillance behaviors were associated with relationship dissatisfaction via rumination, and cognitive jealousy was also directly associated with relationship dissatisfaction. Interestingly, surveillance behaviors were directly associated with relationship satisfaction. From these results, rumination is highlighted as a factor in explaining the link between romantic jealousy and relationship dissatisfaction. Clinical implications are discussed
Crime as risk taking
Engagement in criminal activity may be viewed as risk-taking behaviour as it has both benefits and drawbacks that are probabilistic. In two studies, we examined how individuals' risk perceptions can inform our understanding of their intentions to engage in criminal activity. Study 1 measured youths' perceptions of the value and probability of the benefits and drawbacks of engaging in three common crimes (i.e. shoplifting, forgery, and buying illegal drugs), and examined how well these perceptions predicted youths' forecasted engagement in these crimes, controlling for their past engagement. We found that intentions to engage in criminal activity were best predicted by the perceived value of the benefits that may be obtained, irrespective of their probabilities or the drawbacks that may also be incurred. Study 2 specified the benefit and drawback that youth thought about and examined another crime (i.e. drinking and driving). The findings of Study 1 were replicated under these conditions. The present research supports a limited rationality perspective on criminal intentions, and can have implications for crime prevention/intervention strategies
Relief in everyday life
Despite being implicated in a wide range of psychological and behavioral phenomena, relief remains poorly understood from the perspective of psychological science. What complicates the study of relief is that people seem to use the term to describe an emotion that occurs in two distinct situations: when an unpleasant episode is over, or upon realizing that an outcome could have been worse. This study constitutes a detailed empirical investigation of peopleâs reports of everyday episodes of relief. A set of four studies collected a large corpus (N = 1835) of first-person reports of real-life episodes of relief and examined peopleâs judgments about the antecedents of relief, its relation to counterfactual thoughts, and its subsequent effects on decision making. Some participants described relief experiences that had either purely temporal or purely counterfactual precursors. Nevertheless, the findings indicated that the prototypical instance of relief appears to be one in which both these elements are present. The results also suggest that, although relief is frequently experienced in situations in which people are not responsible for the relief-inducing event, nevertheless they typically report that the experience had a positive impact on subsequent decision making
