    Mixing and localization in random time-periodic quantum circuits of Clifford unitaries

    How much do local and time-periodic dynamics resemble a random unitary? In the present work, we address this question by using the Clifford formalism from quantum computation. We analyze a Floquet model with disorder, characterized by a family of local, time-periodic, and random quantum circuits in one spatial dimension. We observe that the evolution operator enjoys an extra symmetry at times that are a half-integer multiple of the period. With this, we prove that after the scrambling time, namely, when any initial perturbation has propagated throughout the system, the evolution operator cannot be distinguished from a (Haar) random unitary when all qubits are measured with Pauli operators. This indistinguishability decreases as time goes on, which is in high contrast to the more studied case of (time-dependent) random circuits. We also prove that the evolution of Pauli operators displays a form of mixing. These results require the dimension of the local subsystem to be large. In the opposite regime, our system displays a novel form of localization, produced by the appearance of effective one-sided walls, which prevent perturbations from crossing the wall in one direction but not the other

    A perspective on the pathway to a scalable quantum internet using rare-earth ions

    The ultimate realization of a global quantum internet will require advances in scalable technologies capable of generating, storing, and manipulating quantum information. The essential devices that will perform these tasks in a quantum network are quantum repeaters, which will enable the long-range distribution of entanglement between distant network nodes. In this perspective, we provide an overview of the primary functions of a quantum repeater and discuss progress that has been made toward the development of repeaters with rare-earth ion doped materials while noting challenges that are being faced as the technologies mature. We give particular attention to erbium, which is well suited for networking applications. Finally, we provide a discussion of near-term benchmarks that can further guide rare-earth ion platforms for impact in near-term quantum networks

    In vivo Skin Penetration, Radical Protection, and Structural Changes after Topical Application of a Herbal Oil Cream Compared to Topical Calcipotriol in Mild to Moderate Psoriasis

    Background: The chronicity of psoriasis often requires continuous topical treatment. Materials and Methods: Here, the radical protection of a cream containing various herbal oils was evaluated in vivo by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and its skin penetration by Raman microscopy in intact and barrier-disturbed skin. Changes in skin barrier properties were evaluated after 4 weeks of daily topical application using in vivo laser scanning microscopy (LSM) and transepidermal water loss in 26 healthy volunteers. A randomized, controlled, double-blind, three-arm parallel clinical study evaluated the efficacy of the herbal oil cream compared to a 0.05% calcipotriol-containing cream and to a vehicle cream, in 135 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis with the change in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) from baseline to week 12 as the primary endpoint. Results: EPR spectroscopy disclosed a significantly higher radical formation in untreated than skin treated with the herbal oil cream (p ≤ 0.05). LSM measurements indicated a protective skin barrier effect in treated compared to untreated skin. In the clinical trial, the topical application of herbal oils showed a significant reduction of the PASI score compared to topical calcipotriol at week 12 (p = 0.016). The mean reduction in PASI was 49% for the herbal oil cream, 38% for calcipotriol, and 55% for the vehicle cream. The percentage of patients, who reached PASI 50 and 75 at any time point, was 55.9% and 29.4% for the herbal oil cream, 47.4% and 15.8% for calcipotriol, and 23 (60.5%) and 13 (34.2%) for the vehicle, respectively (p > 0.05). The vehicle, originally designed as a placebo, contained a main ingredient of the herbal oil cream and therefore showed corresponding results. Conclusion: The herbal oil cream demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis

    Maximization of propylene in an industrial FCC unit

    YesThe FCC riser cracks gas oil into useful fuels such as gasoline, diesel and some lighter products such as ethylene and propylene, which are major building blocks for the polyethylene and polypropylene production. The production objective of the riser is usually the maximization of gasoline and diesel, but it can also be to maximize propylene. The optimization and parameter estimation of a six-lumped catalytic cracking reaction of gas oil in FCC is carried out to maximize the yield of propylene using an optimisation framework developed in gPROMS software 5.0 by optimizing mass flow rates and temperatures of catalyst and gas oil. The optimal values of 290.8 kg/s mass flow rate of catalyst and 53.4 kg/s mass flow rate of gas oil were obtained as propylene yield is maximized to give 8.95 wt%. When compared with the base case simulation value of 4.59 wt% propylene yield, the maximized propylene yield is increased by 95%

    Patient Satisfaction in the Emergency Department of Savodjbolaq Hospitals

    Objective: Determination of patient satisfaction in the emergency department. Methods: Patient satisfaction in the emergency department was evaluated by a questionnaire in a descriptive analytic cross-sectional study. This questionnaire contained some questions about physician and nursing services, medical equipments, and physical environment of the emergency department. Satisfaction scores were converted to a binary score (unsatisfied and satisfied) and the association of this binary variable (satisfaction) with other demographic characteristics was measured in logistic regression model. Results: Patient satisfaction from acceptance portion and physical environment of the hospitals was moderate though from physician and nursing services was good. The correlation between satisfaction and willingness to return and also waiting time was statistically significant (OR= 1/81 CI 95% 1/10&ndash; 3/06, OR= 0/34 CI 95% 0/22&ndash; 0/74) on logistic regression analysis. The correlation between satisfaction and age, gender, refers' time and work shift did not significantly differ. Overall patient satisfaction in Hashtgerd hospital was significantly more than Nazarabad hospital (p<0/05). Conclusion: This study revealed that physician waiting times are an important factor in patient satisfaction. In present study, most of the patients were visited in less than 15 minutes and the presence of other more emergency cases were the most reason for delay in visiting times. These findings suggest that emergency department patient satisfaction improvement efforts should focus on a limited number of modifiable and easily measured factors
