Fresh Insights into Disease Etiology and the Role of Microbial Pathogens.
Pathogens have been implicated in the initiation and/or promotion of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma, SSc); however, no evidence was found to substantiate the direct contribution to this disease in past years. Recently, significant advances have been made in understanding the role of the innate immune system in SSc pathogenesis, supporting the idea that pathogens might interact with host innate immune-regulatory responses in SSc. In light of these findings, we review the studies that identified the presence of pathogens in SSc, along with studies on pathogens implicated in driving the innate immune dysregulation in SSc. The goal of this review is to illustrate how these pathogens, specifically viruses, may play important role both as triggers of the innate immune system, and critical players in the development of SSc disease
Molecular mimicry, genetic homology, and gene sharing proteomic âmolecular fingerprintsâ using an EBV (Epstein-Barr virus)-derived microarray as a potential diagnostic method in autoimmune disease
EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) and other human DNA viruses are associated with autoimmune syndromes in epidemiologic studies. In this work, immunoglobulin G response to EBV-encoded proteins which share regions with human immune response proteins from the human host including ZEBRA (BZLF-1 encoded protein), BALF-2 recombinase expressed primarily during the viral lytic replication cycle, and EBNA-1 (Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen) expressed during the viral latency cycle respectively were characterized using a laser-printed micro-array ( PEPperprint.com ). IgG response to conserved "A/T hooks" in EBV-encoded proteins such as EBNA-1 and the BALF-2 recombinase related to host DNA-binding proteins including RAG-1 recombinase and histones, and EBV-encoded virokines such as the IL-10 homologue BCRF-1 suggest further directions for clinical research. The author suggests that proteomic "molecular fingerprints" of the immune response to viral proteins shared with human immune response genes are potentially useful in early diagnosis and monitoring of autoantibody production and response to therapy in EBV-related autoimmune syndromes
Banksâ centrality in corporate interlock networks: evidences in Italy
The idea that the governance mechanisms affect firmsâ performance is well acknowledged in management literature. The settings prevailing in governance studies explain boardâs roles at the light of the agency theory framework. However, a complementary perspective is focused on the acquisition of critical resources closely related to activation of external relations with the most influential actors of firmâs environment. One such kind of external relationship is called interlocking directorates and occur when an individual simultaneously sits on the board of two companies. Moreover, since banks control financial capital, that is a resource that has a universal value for all firms, they are more likely to be very important actors inside corporate networks. By analyzing interlocking directorates among listed banks and non financial firms in Italy, using the methods and theory of social network analysis (SNA), I find that banks are the most influential actors in the network and that centrality in the network enhances financial performance.Corporate Governance, Board of Directors, Performance, Social network analysis
Ad auctions and cascade model: GSP inefficiency and algorithms
The design of the best economic mechanism for Sponsored Search Auctions
(SSAs) is a central task in computational mechanism design/game theory. Two
open questions concern the adoption of user models more accurate than that one
currently used and the choice between Generalized Second Price auction (GSP)
and Vickrey-Clark-Groves mechanism (VCG). In this paper, we provide some
contributions to answer these questions. We study Price of Anarchy (PoA) and
Price of Stability (PoS) over social welfare and auctioneer's revenue of GSP
w.r.t. the VCG when the users follow the famous cascade model. Furthermore, we
provide exact, randomized, and approximate algorithms, showing that in
real-world settings (Yahoo! Webscope A3 dataset, 10 available slots) optimal
allocations can be found in less than 1s with up to 1000 ads, and can be
approximated in less than 20ms even with more than 1000 ads with an average
