Parametric Competition in non-autonomous Hamiltonian Systems
In this work we use the formalism of chord functions (\emph{i.e.}
characteristic functions) to analytically solve quadratic non-autonomous
Hamiltonians coupled to a reservoir composed by an infinity set of oscillators,
with Gaussian initial state. We analytically obtain a solution for the
characteristic function under dissipation, and therefore for the determinant of
the covariance matrix and the von Neumann entropy, where the latter is the
physical quantity of interest. We study in details two examples that are known
to show dynamical squeezing and instability effects: the inverted harmonic
oscillator and an oscillator with time dependent frequency. We show that it
will appear in both cases a clear competition between instability and
dissipation. If the dissipation is small when compared to the instability, the
squeezing generation is dominant and one can see an increasing in the von
Neumann entropy. When the dissipation is large enough, the dynamical squeezing
generation in one of the quadratures is retained, thence the growth in the von
Neumann entropy is contained

Diversidade de rizóbios em áreas revegetadas após a mineração de bauxita.
A contribuição da diversidade dos rizóbios para manutenção da diversidade e funcionalidade de ecossistemas naturais tem sido pouco estudada. Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a diversidade de rizóbios em áreas revegetadas em diferentes épocas. Utilizou-se siratro e mimosa como plantas-isca e as ferramentas PCR-RFLP, sequencimanto e BOX-PCR. Observou-se que as áreas de maior diversidade foram as revegetadas há mais tempo e as áreas revegetadas com plantio da leguminosa Acacia mangium e, que isolados proximamente relacionados ao gênero Bradyrhizobium foram os mais abundantes
Classical and quantum-mechanical treatments of nonsequential double ionization with few-cycle laser pulses
We address nonsequential double ionization induced by strong, linearly
polarized laser fields of only a few cycles, considering a physical mechanism
in which the second electron is dislodged by the inelastic collision of the
first electron with its parent ion. The problem is treated classically, using
an ensemble model, and quantum-mechanically, within the strong-field and
uniform saddle-point approximations. In the latter case, the results are
interpreted in terms of "quantum orbits", which can be related to the
trajectories of a classical electron in an electric field. We obtain highly
asymmetric electron momentum distributions, which strongly depend on the
absolute phase, i.e., on the phase difference between the pulse envelope and
its carrier frequency. Around a particular value of this parameter, the
distributions shift from the region of positive to that of negative momenta, or
vice-versa, in a radical fashion. This behavior is investigated in detail for
several driving-field parameters, and provides a very efficient method for
measuring the absolute phase. Both models yield very similar distributions,
which share the same physical explanation. There exist, however, minor
discrepancies due to the fact that, beyond the region for which electron-impact
ionization is classically allowed, the yields from the quantum mechanical

Oral Tolerance: Therapeutic Implications for Autoimmune Diseases
Oral tolerance is classically defined as the suppression of immune responses to antigens (Ag) that have been administered previously by the oral route. Multiple mechanisms of tolerance are induced by oral Ag. Low doses favor active suppression, whereas higher doses favor clonal anergy/deletion. Oral Ag induces Th2 (IL-4/IL-10) and Th3 (TGF-β) regulatory T cells (Tregs) plus CD4+CD25+ regulatory cells and LAP+T cells. Induction of oral tolerance is enhanced by IL-4, IL-10, anti-IL-12, TGF-β, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), Flt-3 ligand, anti-CD40 ligand and continuous feeding of Ag. In addition to oral tolerance, nasal tolerance has also been shown to be effective in suppressing inflammatory conditions with the advantage of a lower dose requirement. Oral and nasal tolerance suppress several animal models of autoimmune diseases including experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), uveitis, thyroiditis, myasthenia, arthritis and diabetes in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse, plus non-autoimmune diseases such as asthma, atherosclerosis, colitis and stroke. Oral tolerance has been tested in human autoimmune diseases including MS, arthritis, uveitis and diabetes and in allergy, contact sensitivity to DNCB, nickel allergy. Positive results have been observed in phase II trials and new trials for arthritis, MS and diabetes are underway. Mucosal tolerance is an attractive approach for treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases because of lack of toxicity, ease of administration over time and Ag-specific mechanism of action. The successful application of oral tolerance for the treatment of human diseases will depend on dose, developing immune markers to assess immunologic effects, route (nasal versus oral), formulation, mucosal adjuvants, combination therapy and early therapy
Distinguishing the albedo of exoplanets from stellar activity
Light curves show the flux variation from the target star and its orbiting
planets as a function of time. In addition to the transit features created by
the planets, the flux also includes the reflected light component of each
planet, which depends on the planetary albedo. This signal is typically
referred to as phase curve and could be easily identified if there were no
additional noise. As well as instrumental noise, stellar activity, such as
spots, can create a modulation in the data, which may be very difficult to
distinguish from the planetary signal. We analyze the limitations imposed by
the stellar activity on the detection of the planetary albedo, considering the
limitations imposed by the predicted level of instrumental noise and the short
duration of the observations planned in the context of the CHEOPS mission. As
initial condition, we have assumed that each star is characterized by just one
orbiting planet. We built mock light curves that included a realistic stellar
activity pattern, the reflected light component of the planet and an
instrumental noise level, which we have chosen to be at the same level as
predicted for CHEOPS. We then fit these light curves to try to recover the
reflected light component, assuming the activity patterns can be modeled with a
Gaussian process.We estimate that at least one full stellar rotation is
necessary to obtain a reliable detection of the planetary albedo. This result
is independent of the level of noise, but it depends on the limitation of the
Gaussian process to describe the stellar activity when the light curve
time-span is shorter than the stellar rotation. Finally, in presence of typical
CHEOPS gaps in the simulations, we confirm that it is still possible to obtain

Runoff at the micro-plot and slope scale following wildfire, central Portugal
Through their effects on soil properties and vegetation/litter cover, wildfires can strongly enhance overland flow generation and accelerate soil erosion [1] and, thereby, negatively affect land-use sustainability as well as downstream aquatic and flood zones. Wildfires are a common phenomenon in present-day Portugal, devastating in an average year some 100.000 ha of forest and woodlands and in an exceptional year like 2003 over 400.000 ha. There therefore exists a clear need in Portugal for a tool that can provide guidance to post-fire land management by predicting soil erosion risk, on the one hand, and, on the other, the mitigation effectiveness of soil conservation measures. Such a tool has recently been developed for the Western U.S.A. [3: ERMiT] but its suitability for Portuguese forests will need to be corroborated by field observations.
Testing the suitability of existing erosion models in recently burned forest areas in Portugal is, in a nutshell, the aim of the EROSFIRE projects. In the first EROSFIRE project the emphasis was on the prediction of erosion at the scale of individual hill slopes. In the ongoing EROSFIRE-II project the spatial scope is extended to include the catchment scale, so that also the connectivity between hill slopes as well as channel and road processes are being addressed. Besides ERMiT, the principal models under evaluation for slope-scale erosion prediction are: (i) the variant of USLE [4] applied by the Portuguese Water Institute after the wildfires of 2003; (ii) the Morgan–Morgan–Finney model (MMF) [5]; (iii) MEFIDIS [6]. From these models, MEFIDIS and perhaps MMF will, after successful calibration at the slope scale, also be applied for predicting catchment-scale sediment yields of extreme events
Enhancement of bichromatic high-harmonic generation with a high-frequency field
Using a high-frequency field superposed to a linearly polarized bichromatic
laser field composed by a wave with frequency and a wave with
frequency , we show it is possible to enhance the intensity of a
group of high harmonics in orders of magnitude. These harmonics have
frequencies about 30% higher than the monochromatic-cutoff frequency, and,
within the three-step-model framework, correspond to a set of electron
trajectories for which tunneling ionization is strongly suppressed. Particular
features in the observed enhancement suggest that the high-frequency field
provides an additional mechanism for the electron to reach the continuum. This
interpretation is supported by a time-frequency analysis of the harmonic yield.
The additional high frequency field permits the control of this group of
harmonics leaving all other sets of harmonics practically unchanged, which is
