Minimum construction of two-qubit quantum operations
Optimal construction of quantum operations is a fundamental problem in the
realization of quantum computation. We here introduce a newly discovered
quantum gate, B, that can implement any arbitrary two-qubit quantum operation
with minimal number of both two- and single-qubit gates. We show this by giving
an analytic circuit that implements a generic nonlocal two-qubit operation from
just two applications of the B gate. We also demonstrate that for the highly
scalable Josephson junction charge qubits, the B gate is also more easily and
quickly generated than the CNOT gate for physically feasible parameters.Comment: 4 page
hidrográfica do rio Mondego.
Paratuberculose ovina.Agradecimentos: Ao Projecto Agro 786, Medida 8. Desenvolvimento Tecnológico e Demonstração. Acção 8.1-Desenvolvimento Experimental e Demonstração, bem como a todas as entidades nele interveniente
Approximate Quantum Compiling for Quantum Simulation: A Tensor Network based approach
The simulation of quantum spin chains is a promising candidate for the
demonstration of quantum advantage. One of the main obstacles to achieving this
is the noise that arises from implementing the deep circuits that appear in
standard quantum time evolution algorithms. Compiling these deep circuits into
shallower ones is thus a key issue that we address in this work. We use a
Tensor Network based approach to Approximate Quantum Compiling to produce short
depth quantum circuits that simulate the time evolution of the Heisenberg spin
chain on up to 100 qubits. Furthermore, we run these short depth circuits on a
ibmq-mumbai - a 27 qubit device - and show that the accuracy of the measured
observables is significantly improved after applying our Tensor Network
compilation scheme
Evaluations of witnesses' responses to bias: Universalism - Concern and the costs of confrontation
Highlights
- We investigated how majority-group witnesses' responses to bias are evaluated.
- Confronting is perceived to be a more appropriate response than not confronting.
- The exception is when the personal costs of confronting are high.
- In this case, evaluations of responses to bias are moderated by observers' values.Abstract
The present research examined how situational and individual difference factors influence majority-group observers' evaluations of witnesses' responses to an incident of bias. In Study 1, participants learned of a situation in which a White person applying for a job he did or did not need (high vs. low cost of confrontation) heard his interviewer make a racist comment, which the White person did or did not confront. Non-confrontation was evaluated as less appropriate than confrontation when the costs of confronting were low, but not when costs were high, revealing that in a high cost situation the appropriate response to bias is more ambiguous. Study 2 focused on this high cost situation to show that evaluations of another person's responses to bias depend on individual differences in the observer's values. Observers who scored low on Universalism–Concern evaluated another person's non-confrontation as appropriate as confrontation, but participants who scored high on Universalism–Concern perceived non-confrontation as less appropriate. Considering how responses to bias are assessed helps illuminate normative processes that affect confrontations of bias against outgroups, contributing to the knowledge of the processes that may allow biases to persist
Photoassociation of cold atoms with chirped laser pulses: time-dependent calculations and analysis of the adiabatic transfer within a two-state model
This theoretical paper presents numerical calculations for photoassociation
of ultracold cesium atoms with a chirped laser pulse and detailed analysis of
the results. In contrast with earlier work, the initial state is represented by
a stationary continuum wavefunction. In the chosen example, it is shown that an
important population transfer is achieved to vibrational levels in
the vicinity of the v=98 bound level in the external well of the
potential. Such levels lie in the energy range swept by
the instantaneous frequency of the pulse, thus defining a ``photoassociation
window''. Levels outside this window may be significantly excited during the
pulse, but no population remains there after the pulse. Finally, the population
transfer to the last vibrational levels of the ground (6s + 6s)
is significant, making stable molecules. The results are interpreted in the
framework of a two state model as an adiabatic inversion mechanism, efficient
only within the photoassociation window. The large value found for the
photoassociation rate suggests promising applications. The present chirp has
been designed in view of creating a vibrational wavepacket in the excited state
which is focussing at the barrier of the double well potential.Comment: 49 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Stabilization of Ultracold Molecules Using Optimal Control Theory
In recent experiments on ultracold matter, molecules have been produced from
ultracold atoms by photoassociation, Feshbach resonances, and three-body
recombination. The created molecules are translationally cold, but
vibrationally highly excited. This will eventually lead them to be lost from
the trap due to collisions. We propose shaped laser pulses to transfer these
highly excited molecules to their ground vibrational level. Optimal control
theory is employed to find the light field that will carry out this task with
minimum intensity. We present results for the sodium dimer. The final target
can be reached to within 99% if the initial guess field is physically
motivated. We find that the optimal fields contain the transition frequencies
required by a good Franck-Condon pumping scheme. The analysis is able to
identify the ranges of intensity and pulse duration which are able to achieve
this task before other competing process take place. Such a scheme could
produce stable ultracold molecular samples or even stable molecular

Pancreatic lesions and metabolic aggravation are prevented by low doses of sitagliptin in a rat model of type 2 diabetes
Introduction: The management of type 2 diabetes is designed to reduce disease-related complications and improve long-term outcomes. Inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) activity by sitagliptin has been shown to improve glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) by prolonging the actions of incretin hormones, but the real impact of low-dose sitagliptin treatment on cardiometabolic risk factors and pancreatic lesions is almost unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low doses of sitagliptin on cardiovascular risk factors and histological pancreas parameters in Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats (ZDF (fa/fa)) an animal model of T2DM.
Materials and Methods: Twenty weeks old diabetic obese (fa/fa) ZDF male rats were treated with vehicle or sitagliptin (10 mg/kg BW/day) during 6 weeks (n=8 each). The following parameters were assessed: glycaemia, HbA1c, insulin, lipidic profile; blood pressure. Specimens for pancreatic histopathology were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and periodic-acid-Shiff, examined by light microscopy. Endocrine and exocrine pancreas was evaluated semiquantitatively concerning inflammatory infiltrate, fibrosis, vacuolization and congestion, and scored from 0 (absent) to 3 (severe and extensive damage).
Results: Sitagliptin in diabetic obese ZDF rats promoted a positive effect on dysglycaemia, dyslipidaemia and prevented the increase of blood pressure. Endocrine and exocrine pancreas presented a reduction/amelioration of fibrosis severity, inflammatory infiltrate, intra-islet vacuolation, and congestion vs the vehicle-treated diabetic rats.
Conclusion: Simultaneous improvement of a sustainable glycaemic profile and of pancreatic histopathological lesions supports the favorable cardiovascular risk profile and may prove beneficial in decreasing long-term complications of T2DM.The authors are very grateful to the support of Fundação Merck Sharp & Dohm
Scalability of quantum computation with addressable optical lattices
We make a detailed analysis of error mechanisms, gate fidelity, and
scalability of proposals for quantum computation with neutral atoms in
addressable (large lattice constant) optical lattices. We have identified
possible limits to the size of quantum computations, arising in 3D optical
lattices from current limitations on the ability to perform single qubit gates
in parallel and in 2D lattices from constraints on laser power. Our results
suggest that 3D arrays as large as 100 x 100 x 100 sites (i.e.,
qubits) may be achievable, provided two-qubit gates can be performed with
sufficiently high precision and degree of parallelizability. Parallelizability
of long range interaction-based two-qubit gates is qualitatively compared to
that of collisional gates. Different methods of performing single qubit gates
are compared, and a lower bound of is determined on the
error rate for the error mechanisms affecting Cs in a blue-detuned
lattice with Raman transition-based single qubit gates, given reasonable limits
on experimental parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review
