Shuttle ascent and shock impingement aerodynamic heating studies
The collection and analysis of aerodynamic heating data obtained from shock impingement experimental investigation were completed. The data were categorized into four interference areas; fin leading edge, wing/fuselage fin/plate corners, and space shuttle configurations. The effects of shock impingement were found to increase the heating rates 10 to 40 times the undisturbed values. A test program was completed at NASA/Langley Research Center to investigate the magnitudes and surface patterns of the mated shock interference flowfield. A 0.0065 scale thin-skin model of the MDAC 256-20 space shuttle booster mated with a Stycast model of the MDAC Internal tank orbiter was tested in the 20-inch M=6 tunnel, the 31-inch M=10 tunnel, and the 48-inch Unitary Plan Tunnel. The gap region of the ascent configuration was the principal area of interest where both thermocouple and phase-change paint data were obtained. Pressure and heat transfer distributions data on the leeward surface of a 75-degree sweep slab delta wing are presented. The effects of surface roughness on boundary layer transition and aerodynamic heating were investigated
Dynamical coupled-channel model of kaon-hyperon interactions
The pi N --> KY and KY --> KY reactions are studied using a dynamical
coupled-channel model of meson-baryon interactions at energies where the baryon
resonances are strongly excited. The channels included are: pi N, K \Lambda,
and K\Sigma. The resonances considered are: N^* [S_{11}(1650), P_{11}(1710),
P_{13}(1720),D_{13}(1700)]; \Delta^* [S_{31}(1900), P_{31}(1910),
P_{33}(1920)]; \Lambda ^* [S_{01}(1670), P_{01}(1810)] \Sigma^* [P_{11}(1660),
D_{13}(1670)]; and K^*(892). The basic non-resonant \pi N --> KY and KY --> KY
transition potentials are derived from effective Lagrangians using a unitary
transformation method. The dynamical coupled-channel equations are simplified
by parametrizing the pi N -->pi N amplitudes in terms of empirical pi N
partial-wave amplitudes and a phenomenological off-shell function. Two models
have been constructed. Model A is built by fixing all coupling constants and
resonance parameters using SU(3) symmetry, the Particle Data Group values, and
results from a constituent quark model. Model B is obtained by allowing most of
the parameters to vary around the values of model A in fitting the data. Good
fits to the available data for pi^- p to K^0 \Lambda, K^0 \Sigma^0 have been
achieved. The investigated kinematics region in the center-of-mass frame goes
from threshold to 2.5 GeV. The constructed models can be imbedded into
associated dynamical coupled-channel studies of kaon photo- and
electro-production reactions.Comment: 35 pages, 11 Figure

Nano Chromium Picolinate Improves Gene Expression Associated with Insulin Signaling in Porcine Skeletal Muscle and Adipose Tissue
The aim of this study was to investigate the interactive effects of dietary nano chromium picolinate (nCrPic) and dietary fat on genes involved in insulin signaling in skeletal muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue of pigs. Forty-eight gilts were stratified on body weight into four blocks of four pens of three pigs and then within each block each pen was randomly allocated to four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The respective factors were dietary fat (22 or 57 g/kg) and dietary nCrPic (0 or 400 ppb nCrPic) fed for six weeks. Skeletal muscle samples were collected from the Longissimus thoracis and subcutaneous adipose tissue collected from above this muscle. Dietary nCrPic increased adiponectin, uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) and serine/threonine protein kinase (AKT) mRNA expression, whereas dietary fat decreased adiponectin and increased leptin, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors γ (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα) mRNA expression in adipose tissue. In skeletal muscle, dietary nCrPic increased phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K), AKT, UCP3 and interleukin-15 (IL-15), as well as decreased suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) mRNA expression. The improvement in insulin signaling and muscle mass and the reduction in carcass fatness by dietary nCrPic may be via decreased SOCS3 and increased UCP3 and IL-15 in skeletal muscle and increased adiponectin in subcutaneous adipose tissue
Study of cavernous underground conduits in Nam La (Northwest Vietnam) by an integrative approach
This paper presents the result of an investigation of underground conduits, which connect the swallow holes and the resurgence of a blind river in the tropical, highly karstified limestone Nam La catchment in the NW of Vietnam. The Nam La River disappears underground in several swallow holes near the outlet of the catchment. In the rainy season this results in flooding upstream of the sinkholes. A hypothesis is that the Nam La River resurges at a large cavern spring 4.5 km east of the catchment outlet. A multi-thematic study of the possible connections between the swallow holes and the resurgence was carried out to investigate the geological structure, tectonics, cave structure analysis and discharge time series. The existence of the underground conduits was also tested and proven by tracer experiments. On the basis of a lineament analysis the location of the underground conduits were predicted. A remote sensing derived lineament-length density map was used to track routes from the swallow holes to the resurgence, having the shortest length but highest lineament density. This resulted in a plan-view prediction of underground conduits that matches with the cave and fault development. The functioning of the conduits was further explained by analysing flooding records of a nearby doline, which turns out to act as a temporary storage reservoir mitigating flooding of the catchment outlet area
Single-Atom Resolved Fluorescence Imaging of an Atomic Mott Insulator
The reliable detection of single quantum particles has revolutionized the
field of quantum optics and quantum information processing. For several years,
researchers have aspired to extend such detection possibilities to larger scale
strongly correlated quantum systems, in order to record in-situ images of a
quantum fluid in which each underlying quantum particle is detected. Here we
report on fluorescence imaging of strongly interacting bosonic Mott insulators
in an optical lattice with single-atom and single-site resolution. From our
images, we fully reconstruct the atom distribution on the lattice and identify
individual excitations with high fidelity. A comparison of the radial density
and variance distributions with theory provides a precise in-situ temperature
and entropy measurement from single images. We observe Mott-insulating plateaus
with near zero entropy and clearly resolve the high entropy rings separating
them although their width is of the order of only a single lattice site.
Furthermore, we show how a Mott insulator melts for increasing temperatures due
to a proliferation of local defects. Our experiments open a new avenue for the
manipulation and analysis of strongly interacting quantum gases on a lattice,
as well as for quantum information processing with ultracold atoms. Using the
high spatial resolution, it is now possible to directly address individual
lattice sites. One could, e.g., introduce local perturbations or access regions
of high entropy, a crucial requirement for the implementation of novel cooling
schemes for atoms on a lattice
The Correlation between Rates of Cancer and Autism: An Exploratory Ecological Investigation
Autism is associated with high rates of genomic aberrations, including chromosomal rearrangements and de novo copy-number variations. These observations are reminiscent of cancer, a disease where genomic rearrangements also play a role. We undertook a correlative epidemiological study to explore the possibility that shared risk factors might exist for autism and specific types of cancer. To determine if significant correlations exist between the prevalence of autism and the incidence of cancer, we obtained and analyzed state-wide data reported by age and gender throughout the United States. Autism data were obtained from the U.S. Department of Education via the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (2000-2007, reported annually by age group) and cancer incidence data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (1999-2005). IDEA data were further subdivided depending on the method used to diagnose autism (DSM IV or the Code of Federal Regulations, using strict or expanded criteria). Spearman rank correlations were calculated for all possible pairwise combinations of annual autism rates and the incidence of specific cancers. Following this, Bonferroni's correction was applied to significance values. Two independent methods for determining an overall combined p-value based on dependent correlations were obtained for each set of calculations. High correlations were found between autism rates and the incidence of in situ breast cancer (p < or = 10(-10), modified inverse chi square, n = 16) using data from states that adhere strictly to the Code of Federal Regulations for diagnosing autism. By contrast, few significant correlations were observed between autism prevalence and the incidence of 23 other female and 22 male cancers. These findings suggest that there may be an association between autism and specific forms of cancer
Topological Edge Plasmon Modes between Diatomic Chains of Nanoparticles
We study the topological edge plasmon modes between two "diatomic" chains of
identical plasmonic nanoparticles. Zak phase for longitudinal plasmon modes in
each chain is calculated analytically by solutions of macroscopic Maxwell's
equations for particles in quasi-static dipole approximation. This
approximation provides a direct analogy with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model
such that the eigenvalue is mapped to the frequency dependent
inverse-polarizability of the nanoparticles. The edge state frequency is found
to be the same as the single-particle resonance frequency, which is insensitive
to the separation distances within a unit cell. Finally, full electrodynamic
simulations with realistic parameters suggest that the edge plasmon mode can be
realized through near-field optical spectroscopy.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
