    Thorough investigation on the high-temperature polymorphism of dipentyl-perylenediimide: thermal expansion vs. polymorphic transition

    N,N′-Dipentyl-3,4,9,10-perylendiimide (PDI-C5) is an organic semiconducting material which has been extensively investigated as model compound for its optoelectronic properties. It is known to be highly thermally stable, that it exhibits solid-state transitions with temperature and that thermal treatments lead to an improvement in its performance in devices. Here we report a full thermal characterization of PDI-C5 by combination of differential scanning calorimetry, variable temperature X-ray diffraction, hot stage microscopy, and variable temperature Raman spectroscopy. We identified two high temperature polymorphs, form II and form III, which form respectively at 112 °C and at 221 °C and we determined their crystal structure from powder data. Form II is completely reversible upon cooling with low hysteresis, while form III revealed a different thermal behaviour upon cooling depending on the technique and crystal size. The crystal structure features of the different polymorphs are discussed and compared, and we looked into the role of the perylene core and alkyl chains during solid-state transitions.     Probing molecular arrangements of the organic semiconductor 2,7-Dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2- b][1]benzothiophene thin film at the interface by UV Resonant Raman scattering

    Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate nanometric thick films of the organic semiconductor 2,7-Dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene, following a comprehensive vibrational characterization of the compound condensed phases at various excitation wavelengths. UV Raman excitation enabled the characterization of the thin films, revealing that the molecular orientation at the film/air interface is characterized by a different organization and/or a high degree of disorder compared to the bulk phase. The low penetration depth of the UV Raman excitation allows for the retrieval of this information, unlike the XRD data

    Follicular dynamics in synchronized Italian Mediterranean buffalo cows

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the length and the characteristics of the oestrous cycle in Italian Mediterranean buffalo cows, undergone synchronization of ovulation. The trial was performed on 32 buffaloes synchronized by the Ovsynch Program, which consists of an injection of GnRH on day 0, PGF2α on day 7 and GnRH on day 9. Starting on day 10 (Day 0 of the new cycle). Buffaloes undergone ultrasound examination of the ovaries on alternate days until the following heat. Follicular growth and corpus luteum formation and dimensions were recorded as well as the number of follicular waves. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA. Four animals (12.5%) did not show signs of oestrous and were excluded from the trial. The mean length of the oestrous cycle was 23.7±3.4 days. In particular, 1 animal (3.6%) showed an oestrous cycle characterized by 1 follicular wave with a length of 16 days, 17 subjects (60.7%) showed 2 follicular waves with a cycle length of 22.4±2.3 days and 10 buffaloes (35.7%) showed 3 follicular waves with a cycle of 26.8±2.0 days. These results confirm previous reports performed in buffalo species, although the cycle resulted longer in the 3-waves group

    Chemical Doping of the Organic Semiconductor C8-BTBT-C8 Using an Aqueous Iodine Solution for Device Mobility Enhancement

    The performance of organic field-effect transistors is still severely limited by factors such as contact resistance and charge trapping. Chemical doping is considered to be a promising key enabler for improving device performance, although there is a limited number of established doping protocols as well as a lack of understanding of the doping mechanisms. Here, a very simple doping methodology based on exposing an organic semiconductor thin film to an aqueous iodine solution is reported. The doped devices exhibit enhanced device mobility, which becomes channel-length independent, a decreased threshold voltage and a reduction in the density of interfacial traps. The device OFF current is not altered, which is in agreement with the spectroscopic data that points out that no charge transfer processes are occurring. Kelvin probe force microscopy characterization of the devices under operando conditions unambiguously proves that an important reduction of the contact resistance takes place after their exposition to the iodine solution, reaching almost ohmic contact

    Incidence, risk factors, and outcome of BK polyomavirus infection after kidney transplantation

    BACKGROUND Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy is a leading cause of kidney allograft failure. Therapeutic options are limited and prompt reduction of the net state of immunosuppression represents the mainstay of treatment. More recent application of aggressive screening and management protocols for BK-virus infection after renal transplantation has shown encouraging results. Nevertheless, long-term outcome for patients with BK-viremia and nephropathy remains obscure. Risk factors for BK-virus infection are also unclear. AIM To investigate incidence, risk factors, and outcome of BK-virus infection after kidney transplantation. METHODS This single-centre observational study with a median follow up of 57 (31-80) mo comprises 629 consecutive adult patients who underwent kidney transplantation between 2007 and 2013. Data were prospectively recorded and annually reviewed until 2016. Recipients were periodically screened for BK-virus by plasma quantitative polymerized chain reaction. Patients with BK viral load >= 1000 copies/mL were diagnosed BK-viremia and underwent histological assessment to rule out nephropathy. In case of BK-viremia, immunosuppression was minimized according to a prespecified protocol. The following outcomes were evaluated: patient survival, overall graft survival, graft failure considering death as a competing risk, 30-d-event-censored graft failure, response to treatment, rejection, renal function, urologic complications, opportunistic infections, new-onset diabetes after transplantation, and malignancies. We used a multivariable model to analyse risk factors for BK-viremia and nephropathy. RESULTS BK-viremia was detected in 9.5% recipients. Initial viral load was high (>= 10000 copies/mL) in 66.7% and low (= 50% (30% vs 14.6%, P = 0.0047), human leukocyte antigen (HLA) mismatching > 4 (26.7% vs 13.4%, P = 0.0110), and rejection within thirty days of transplant (21.7% vs 9.5%; P = 0.0073) was higher in the viremic group. Five-year patient and overall graft survival rates for patients with or without BK-viremia were similar. However, viremic recipients showed higher 5-year crude cumulative (22.5% vs 12.2%, P = 0.0270) and 30-d-event-censored (22.5% vs 7.1%, P = 0.001) incidences of graft failure than control. In the viremic group we also observed higher proportions of recipients with 5-year estimated glomerular filtration rate 50%, HLA mismatching > 4, and rejection were independent risk factors for BK-virus viremia whereas cytomegalovirus prophylaxis was protective. CONCLUSION Current treatment of BK-virus infection offers sub-optimal results. Initial viremia is a valuable parameter to detect patients at increased risk of nephropathy. Panel-reactive antibody > 50% and Afro-Caribbean ethnicity are independent predictors of BK-virus infection whereas cytomegalovirus prophylaxis has a protective effect

    Adolescents (Ad) constitute a difficult to manage population among individuals suffering from asthma. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence, clinical characteristics and age of onset of allergic sensitization and clinical symptoms in a sample of atopic Ad living in the Campania region (Southern Italy). Sixteen Allergy units or Centers belonging to the Italian Association of Hospital and Territorial Allergologists (AAIITO, Campania region) participated in this cross-sectional study. A case report form (CRF) was specifically designed for this study and commercial allergen extracts used for screening SPTs were provided by ALK-AbellĂł Group (Milan, Italy). A total of 443 patients were examined (females, f 220, 49.6 %; males, m 223, 50.3%). Dust mites represent the most common sensitizing agents in allergic Ad living in Campania region (Dermatoph. pteronyssinus 67.4% and Dermatoph. farinae 66.5%), followed by Parietaria (58.9%), grasses (45.8%), Artemisia vulgaris (16.7%), Olea Europaea (32.2%), dog dander (17.1%), cat dander (20.0%), Alternaria alternata (8.1%), Cupressus sempervirens (4.9%), Betula pendula (4.7%), other allergens (19.4%). An interesting comparison has been made between clinical data of our Ad with data of elderly patients (E). The role of allergic sensitization is significantly higher in Ad compared to E. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is the first sensitizing allergen in Ad and the last in E. Parietaria constitutes the first sensitizing pollen both in Ad and E, the percentage of sensitization is higher in Ad. Another important difference is the higher prevalence of As, as only symptom, in E compared to Ad (19.7% versus 7.6%). In conclusion, our findings confirm the high prevalence and clinical significance of airway allergic sensitization in the adolescents living in Campania region

    Human adipose stem cell differentiation is highly affected by cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo : implication for autologous fat grafting

    Recent studies showed that mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue can promote tumour progression, raising some concerns regarding their use in regenerative medicine. In this context, we co-cultured either SAOS2 osteosarcoma or MCF7 breast cancer cells with human adipose stem cells (hASCs), in order to evaluate potential effects of cancer cells on hASCs differentiation, in vitro and in vivo. In this study we observed that both SAOS2 and MCF7 cell lines induced an increase in hASCs proliferation, compared to hASCs alone, but, surprisingly, neither changes in the expression of CD90, CD29, CD324 and vimentin, nor variations in the Twist and Slug mRNAs were detectable. Noteworthy, SAOS2 and MCF7 cells induced in hASCs an upregulation of CD34 expression and stemness genes, including OCT3/4, Nanog, Sox2 and leptin, and a decrease in angiogenic factors, including CD31, PDGF\u3b1, PDGFR\u3b1, PDGFR\u3b2 and VEGF. SMAD and pSMAD2/3 increased only in hASCs alone. After 21 days of co-culture, hASCs differentiated both in adipocytes and endothelial cells. Moreover, co-injection of MCF7 cells with hASCs led to the formation of a highly vascularized tumour. Taken together our findings suggest that mesenchymal stem cells, under tumour cell induction, do not differentiate in vitro or facilitate the angiogenesis of the tumour in vivo, thus opening interesting new scenarios in the relationship between cancer and stem cells. These findings may also lead to greater caution, when managing autologous fat grafts in cancer patients
