    Type IIB orientifolds with discrete torsion

We allow the additional feature of discrete torsion and discuss the modification of the consistency conditions arising from tadpole cancellation.     Field theoretic description of the abelian and non-abelian Josephson effect

    We formulate the Josephson effect in a field theoretic language which affords a straightforward generalization to the non-abelian case. Our formalism interprets Josephson tunneling as the excitation of pseudo-Goldstone bosons. We demonstrate the formalism through the consideration of a single junction separating two regions with a purely non-abelian order parameter and a sandwich of three regions where the central region is in a distinct phase. Applications to various non-abelian symmetry breaking systems in particle and condensed matter physics are given.Comment: 10 pages no figure

    A note on a third order curvature invariant in static spacetimes

    We consider here the third order curvature invariant I=RΌΜρσ;ÎŽRΌΜρσ;ÎŽI=R_{\mu\nu\rho\sigma;\delta}R^{\mu\nu\rho\sigma;\delta} in static spacetimes M=R×Σ{\cal M}=R\times\Sigma for which ÎŁ\Sigma is conformally flat. We evaluate explicitly the invariant for the NN-dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou multi black-holes solution, confirming that II does indeed vanish on the event horizons of such black-holes. Our calculations show, however, that solely the vanishing of II is not sufficient to locate an event horizon in non-spherically symmetric spacetimes.     Respiratory muscle training positively affects vasomotor response in young healthy women

    Vasomotor response is related to the capacity of the vessel to maintain vascular tone within a narrow range. Two main control mechanisms are involved: the autonomic control of the sympathetic neural drive (global control) and the endothelial smooth cells capacity to respond to mechanical stress by releasing vasoactive factors (peripheral control). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of respiratory muscle training (RMT) on vasomotor response, assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and heart rate variability, in young healthy females. The hypothesis was that RMT could enhance the balance between sympa- thetic and parasympathetic neural drive and reduce vessel shear stress. Thus, twenty-four women were randomly assigned to either RMT or SHAM group. Maximal inspiratory mouth pressure and maximum voluntary ventilation were utilized to assess the effectiveness of the RMT program, which consisted of three sessions of isocapnic hyperventilation/ week for eight weeks, (twenty-four training sessions). Heart rate variability assessed autonomic bal- ance, a global factor regulating the vasomotor response. Endothelial function was deter- mined by measuring brachial artery vasodilation normalized by shear rate (%FMD/SR). After RMT, but not SHAM, maximal inspiratory mouth pressure and maximum voluntary ventilation increased significantly (+31% and +16%, respectively). Changes in heart rate variability were negligible in both groups. Only RMT exhibited a significant increase in % FMD/SR (+45%; p\u3c0.05). These data suggest a positive effect of RMT on vasomotor response that may be due to a reduction in arterial shear stress, and not through modulation of sympatho-vagal balance

    On Superspace Chern-Simons-like Terms

    We search for superspace Chern-Simons-like higher-derivative terms in the low energy effective actions of supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Superspace Chern-Simons-like terms are those gauge-invariant terms which cannot be written solely in terms of field strength superfields and covariant derivatives, but in which a gauge potential superfield appears explicitly. We find one class of such four-derivative terms with N=2 supersymmetry which, though locally on the Coulomb branch can be written solely in terms of field strengths, globally cannot be. These terms are classified by certain Dolbeault cohomology classes on the moduli space.     Higher-Derivative Terms in N=2 Supersymmetric Effective Actions

    We show how to systematically construct higher-derivative terms in effective actions in harmonic superspace despite the infinite redundancy in their description due to the infinite number of auxiliary fields. Making an assumption about the absence of certain superspace Chern-Simons-like terms involving vector multiplets, we write all 3- and 4-derivative terms on Higgs, Coulomb, and mixed branches. Among these terms are several with only holomorphic dependence on fields, and at least one satisfies a non-renormalization theorem. These holomorphic terms include a novel 3-derivative term on mixed branches given as an integral over 3/4 of superspace. As an illustration of our method, we search for Wess-Zumino terms in the low energy effective action of N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We show that such terms occur only on mixed branches. We also present an argument showing that the combination of space-time locality with supersymmetry implies locality in the anticommuting superspace coordinates of for unconstrained superfields.Comment: 30 pages.     A scalar invariant and the local geometry of a class of static spacetimes

    The scalar invariant, I, constructed from the "square" of the first covariant derivative of the curvature tensor is used to probe the local geometry of static spacetimes which are also Einstein spaces. We obtain an explicit form of this invariant, exploiting the local warp-product structure of a 4-dimensional static spacetime,  (3)Σ×fR~^{(3)}\Sigma \times_{f} \reals, where (3)Σ^{(3)}\Sigma is the Riemannian hypersurface orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field with norm given by a positive function, ff on (3)Σ^{(3)}\Sigma . For a static spacetime which is an Einstein space, it is shown that the locally measurable scalar, I, contains a term which vanishes if and only if (3)Σ^{(3)}\Sigma is conformally flat; also, the vanishing of this term implies (a)  (3)Σ~^{(3)}\Sigma is locally foliated by level surfaces of ff, (2)S^{(2)}S, which are totally umbilic spaces of constant curvature, and (b) (3)Σ^{(3)}\Sigma is locally a warp-product space.     The Democratic Biopolitics of PrEP

    PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a relatively new drug-based HIV prevention technique and an important means to lower the HIV risk of gay men who are especially vulnerable to HIV. From the perspective of biopolitics, PrEP inscribes itself in a larger trend of medicalization and the rise of pharmapower. This article reconstructs and evaluates contemporary literature on biopolitical theory as it applies to PrEP, by bringing it in a dialogue with a mapping of the political debate on PrEP. As PrEP changes sexual norms and subjectification, for example condom use and its meaning for gay subjectivity, it is highly contested. The article shows that the debate on PrEP can be best described with the concepts ‘sexual-somatic ethics’ and ‘democratic biopolitics’, which I develop based on the biopolitical approach of Nikolas Rose and Paul Rabinow. In contrast, interpretations of PrEP which are following governmentality studies or Italian Theory amount to either farfetched or trivial positions on PrEP, when seen in light of the political debate. Furthermore, the article is a contribution to the scholarship on gay subjectivity, highlighting how homophobia and homonormativity haunts gay sex even in liberal environments, and how PrEP can serve as an entry point for the destigmatization of gay sexuality and transformation of gay subjectivity. ‘Biopolitical democratization’ entails making explicit how medical technology and health care relates to sexual subjectification and ethics, to strengthen the voice of (potential) PrEP users in health politics, and to renegotiate the profit and power of Big Pharma

    Resolving Length Scale Dependent Transient Disorder Through an Ultrafast Phase Transition

    Material functionality can be strongly determined by structure extending only over nanoscale distances. The pair distribution function presents an opportunity to shift structural studies beyond idealized crystal models and investigate structure over varying length scales. Applying this method with ultrafast time resolution has the potential to similarly disrupt the study of structural dynamics and phase transitions. Here, we demonstrate such a measurement of CuIr2_{2}S4_{4} optically pumped from its low temperature Ir-dimerized phase. Dimers are optically removed without spatial correlation, generating a structure whose level of disorder depends strongly on length scale. The re-development of structural ordering over tens of picoseconds is directly tracked over both space and time as a non-equilibrium state is approached.
