    A numerical approach for the analysis of deformable journal bearings

    This paper presents a numerical approach for the analysis of hydrodynamic radial journal bearings. The effect of shaft and housing elastic deformation on pressure distribution within oil film is investigated. An iterative algorithm that couples Reynolds equation with a plane finite elements structural model is solved. Temperature and pressure effects on viscosity are also included with the Vogel-Barus model. The deformed lubrication gap and the overall stress state were calculated. Numerical results are presented with reference to atypical journal bearing configuration at two different inlet oil temperatures. Obtained results show the great influence of elastic deformation of bearing components on oil pressure distribution, compared with results for ideally rigid components obtained by Raimondi and Boyd solution

    Tribological characterisation of magnetron sputtered Ti(C, O, N) thin films

    Ti(C, O, N) thin films were prepared by magnetron sputtering and analysed in terms of their tribological properties. Surface and tribological parameters were analysed and discussed as a function of the films composition and structural features, as well as their thickness. The evolution of friction coefficient values was in concordance with the wear behaviour of the films. According to the atomic composition of the films, an increasing of the carbon percentage and a compound chemical formula closed to the stoichiometric TiC lead to a very good wear behaviour.     Photoluminescence Detected Doublet Structure in the Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

    We present here the results of polarized magneto-photoluminescence measurements on a high mobility single-heterojunction. The presence of a doublet structure over a large magnetic field range (2>nu>1/6) is interpreted as possible evidence for the existence of a magneto-roton minima of the charged density waves. This is understood as an indication of strong electronic correlation even in the case of the IQHE limit.Comment: submitted to Solid State Communication

    Coulomb Driven New Bound States at the Integer Quantum Hall States in GaAs/Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As Single Heterojunctions

    Coulomb driven, magneto-optically induced electron and hole bound states from a series of heavily doped GaAs/Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As single heterojunctions (SHJ) are revealed in high magnetic fields. At low magnetic fields (nu > 2), the photoluminescence spectra display Shubnikov de-Haas type oscillations associated with the empty second subband transition. In the regime of the Landau filling factor nu < 1 and 1 < nu <2, we found strong bound states due to Mott type localizations. Since a SHJ has an open valence band structure, these bound states are a unique property of the dynamic movement of the valence holes in strong magnetic fields

    From Golden Spirals to Constant Slope Surfaces

    In this paper, we find all constant slope surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space, namely those surfaces for which the position vector of a point of the surface makes constant angle with the normal at the surface in that point. These surfaces could be thought as the bi-dimensional analogue of the generalized helices. Some pictures are drawn by using the parametric equations we found.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Proton and alpha radiation-induced mutational profiles in human cells

    Ionizing radiation is known to be DNA damaging and mutagenic, however less is known about which mutational footprints result from exposures of human cells to different types of radiation. We were interested in the mutagenic effects of particle radiation exposures on genomes of various human cell types, in order to gauge the genotoxic risks of galactic cosmic radiation, and of certain types of tumor radiotherapy. To this end, we exposed cultured cell lines from the human blood, breast and lung to fractionated proton and alpha particle (helium nuclei) beams at doses sufficient to considerably affect cell viability. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that mutation rates were not overall markedly increased upon proton and alpha exposures. However, there were modest changes in mutation spectra and distributions, such as the increases in clustered mutations and of certain types of indels and structural variants. The spectrum of mutagenic effects of particle beams may be cell-type and/or genetic background specific. Overall, the mutational effects of repeated exposures to proton and alpha radiation on human cells in culture appear subtle, however further work is warranted to understand effects of long-term exposures on various human tissues.© 2023.     The Carina dSph galaxy: where is the edge?

    Recent cosmological N-body simulations suggest that current empirical estimates of tidal radii in dSphs might be underestimated by at least one order of magnitude. To constrain the plausibility of this theoretical framework, we undertook a multiband (U,B,V,I) survey of the Carina dSph. Deep B,V data of several fields located at radial distances from the Carina center ranging from 0.5 to 4.5 degrees show a sizable sample of faint blue objects with the same magnitudes and colors of old, Turn-Off stars detected across the center. We found that the (U-V,B-I) color-color plane is a robust diagnostic to split stars from background galaxies. Unfortunately, current U,I-band data are too shallow to firmly constrain the real extent of Carina.Comment: To be published on the proceedings of the XLIX meeting of the Italian Astronomical Society.     Foot health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in regional and rural NSW, Australia

    Background: Foot health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians' has not been established. Additionally, studies have shown that there is a lack of engagement of this population with general preventive foot care services. The aim of this study was to establish foot health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attending two recently developed, culturally safe podiatry services in rural and regional New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Secondarily the relationship between self-perceived foot health and some medical and demographic characteristics was investigated. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included participants attending the culturally safe foot health care services managed by the University of Newcastle on the Central Coast or in Wellington, both located in NSW, Australia. At the consultation, participants completed the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) with the assistance of an Aboriginal health care worker, underwent basic vascular and neurological screening, and podiatric treatment. Results: A total of 111 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (48 from the Central Coast, and 63 from Wellington) were included. FHSQ scores for pain (75.7 ± 26.8), function (80.2 ± 25.2), footwear (53.9 ± 33.4), and general foot health (62.0 ± 30.9) were generally good, but below the optimal score of 100. The presence of diabetes (n = 39 of 111 participants or 35.1%) was associated with lower levels of self-perceived foot function (r = - 0.20, n = 107, p = 0.04). Conclusion: We found that community-based foot health care services that are culturally safe are utilised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples not currently at high risk of foot complications. This supports the use of culturally safe foot care services to improve engagement with preventative foot care. Future research should continue to be driven by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and investigate ways to implement additional screening measures and undertake prospective evaluation of the impact of such services on health related outcomes in these communities. © 2020 The Author(s)

    Release of the national scheme's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and cultural safety strategy 2020-2025; the impacts for podiatry in Australia : a commentary

    Background Developing since colonisation, Australia's healthcare system has dismissed an ongoing and successful First Nations health paradigm in place for 60,000 years. From Captain James Cook documenting 'very old' First Nations Peoples being 'far more happier than we Europeans' and Governor Arthur Phillip naming Manly in admiration of the physical health of Gadigal men of the Eora Nation, to anthropologist Daisy Bates' observation of First Nations Peoples living 'into their eighties' and having a higher life expectancy than Europeans; our healthcare system's shameful cultural safety deficit has allowed for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child born in Australia today to expect to live 9 years less than a non-Indigenous child. Disproportionately negative healthcare outcomes including early onset diabetes-related foot disease and high rates of lower limb amputation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples contribute to this gross inequity. Main body In 2020, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority released the National Scheme's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy 2020-2025 - empowering all registered health practitioners within Australia to provide health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples that is inclusive, respectful and safe, as judged by the recipient of care. This recently released strategy is critically important to the podiatry profession in Australia. As clinicians, researchers and educators we have a collective responsibility to engage with this strategy of cultural safety. This commentary defines cultural safety for podiatry and outlines the components of the strategy in the context of our profession. Discussion considers the impact of the strategy on podiatry. It identifies mechanisms for podiatrists in all settings to facilitate safer practice, thereby advancing healthcare to produce more equitable outcomes. Conclusion Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples access health services more frequently and have better health outcomes where provision of care is culturally safe. By engaging with the National Scheme's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy, all registered podiatrists in Australia can contribute to achieving equity in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

    Charged exctions in the fractional quantum Hall regime

    We study the photoluminescence spectrum of a low density (ν<1\nu <1) two-dimensional electron gas at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We find that the spectrum in the fractional quantum Hall regime can be understood in terms of singlet and triplet charged-excitons. We show that these spectral lines are sensitive probes for the electrons compressibility. We identify the dark triplet charged-exciton and show that it is visible at the spectrum at T<2T<2 K. We find that its binding energy scales like e2/le^{2}/l , where ll is the magnetic length, and it crosses the singlet slightly above 15 T.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
