    Direct regulation of large speed excursions for variable speed wind turbines

    In above rated wind speed the pitch control system of a pitch regulated variable speed wind turbine aims to maintain the rotor speed within a permitted range. However, this requirement can be difficult to satisfy during extreme gusts with conventional controllers, particularly for large-scale machines where the pitch actuation capability may be quite limited. This paper investigates the design of a pitch controller for 1 MW variable speed turbine which directly responds to a strong gust by pitching the rotor blades at the maximum permissible rate, thereby exploiting the maximum capability of the actuation system. The performance assessed and compared to that of a conventional pitch controller by simulation studies

    Intelligent Liver Function Testing (iLFT):An Intelligent Laboratory Approach to Identifying Chronic Liver Disease

    The intelligent Liver Function Testing (iLFT) pathway is a novel, algorithm-based system which provides automated laboratory investigations and clinical feedback on abnormal liver function test (LFT) results from primary care. iLFT was introduced to NHS Tayside, Scotland, in August 2018 in response to vast numbers of abnormal LFTs, many of which were not appropriately investigated, coupled with rising mortality from chronic liver disease. Here, we outline the development and implementation of the iLFT pathway, considering the implications for the diagnostic laboratories, primary care services and specialist hepatology clinics. Additionally, we describe the utility, outcomes and evolution of iLFT, which was used over 11,000 times in its first three years alone. Finally, we will consider the future of iLFT and propose areas where similar ‘intelligent’ approaches could be used to add value to laboratory investigations.</p

    Differential approximation for Kelvin-wave turbulence

    I present a nonlinear differential equation model (DAM) for the spectrum of Kelvin waves on a thin vortex filament. This model preserves the original scaling of the six-wave kinetic equation, its direct and inverse cascade solutions, as well as the thermodynamic equilibrium spectra. Further, I extend DAM to include the effect of sound radiation by Kelvin waves. I show that, because of the phonon radiation, the turbulence spectrum ends at a maximum frequency ω∗∼(ϵ3cs20/κ16)1/13\omega^* \sim (\epsilon^3 c_s^{20} / \kappa^{16})^{1/13} where ϵ\epsilon is the total energy injection rate, csc_s is the speed of sound and κ\kappa is the quantum of circulation.Comment: Prepared of publication in JETP Letter

    Periaqueductal grey EP3 receptors facilitate spinal nociception in arthritic secondary hypersensitivity

    Descending controls on spinal nociceptive processing play a pivotal role in shaping the pain experience following tissue injury. Secondary hypersensitivity develops within undamaged tissue adjacent, and distant to, damaged sites. Spinal neuronal pools innervating regions of secondary hypersensitivity are dominated by descending facilitation that amplifies spinal inputs from un-sensitized peripheral nociceptors. Cyclooxygenase–prostaglandin E2 signaling within the ventrolateral periaqueductal grey (vlPAG) is pro-nociceptive in naïve and acutely inflamed animals but its contributions in more prolonged inflammation and, importantly, secondary hypersensitivity remain unknown. In naïve rats, prostaglandin EP3 receptor (EP3R) antagonism in vlPAG modulated noxious withdrawal reflex (EMG) thresholds to preferential C-, but not A-, nociceptor activation, and raised thermal withdrawal thresholds in awake animals. In rats with inflammatory arthritis, secondary mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity of the hind-paw developed, and this was associated with spinal sensitization to Anociceptor inputs alone. In arthritic rats, blockade of vlPAG EP3R raised EMG thresholds to C-nociceptor activation in the area of secondary hypersensitivity to a degree equivalent to that evoked by the same manipulation in naïve rats

    Fractal Bubble Cosmology: A concordant cosmological model?

    The Fractal Bubble model has been proposed as a viable cosmology that does not require dark energy to account for cosmic acceleration, but rather attributes its observational signature to the formation of structure. In this paper it is demonstrated that, in contrast to previous findings, this model is not a good fit to cosmological supernovae data; there is significant tension in the best fit parameters obtained from different samples, whereas LCDM is able to fit all datasets consistently. Furthermore, the concordance between galaxy clustering scales and data from the cosmic microwave background is not achieved with the most recent supernova compilations. The validity of the FB formalism as a sound cosmological model is further challenged as it is shown that previous studies of this model achieve concordance by requiring a value for the present day Hubble constant that is derived from supernovae data containing an arbitrary distance normalisation.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, revised version published in MNRAS letter

    We discuss on noise in heterodyne holography in an off-axis configuration. We show that, for a weak signal, the noise is dominated by the shot noise on the reference beam. This noise corresponds to an equivalent noise on the signal beam of one photoelectron per pixel, for the whole sequence of images used to build the digital hologram

    Multiple physical and chemical techniques including mass spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, gas chromatography, electron microscopy, optical microscopy, electronic spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray analysis, conductivity, and isotopic labeling were used in investigating the atomic interactions between organic environments and titanium and titanium oxide surfaces. Key anhydrous environments studied included alcohols, which contain hydrogen; carbon tetrachloride, which does not contain hydrogen; and mixtures of alcohols and halocarbons. Effects of dissolved salts in alcohols were also studied. This program emphasized experiments designed to delineate the conditions necessary rather than sufficient for initiation processes and for propagation processes in Ti SCC

    Increased risk of chronic kidney disease and mortality in a cohort of people diagnosed with metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease with hepatic fibrosis

    Background and aims: Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) increases the risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the relative risk of CKD associated with increasing hepatic fibrosis, and consequent mortality risk, remains underexplored in real-world cohorts. In this study, we sought to establish whether hepatic fibrosis is associated with increased CKD risk and explore differences in mortality risk in a cohort of people living with MASLD, contingent on liver fibrosis and CKD status.Methods: This was an observational study of people who underwent routine liver function testing in Tayside, Scotland. MASLD was defined as: elevated ALT (&gt;30 U/L) or GGT (&gt;73 U/L); presence of diabetes, and/or hypertension, and/or obesity; weekly alcohol consumption &lt;14 units (112g (+/-8g) alcohol); and negative screen for other aetiologies. Data was collected from digital health records. We used log-binomial models to quantify the risk of CKD among those with and without fibrosis, and Cox regression models to estimate differences in mortality risk dependent on fibrosis and CKD.Results: In our cohort (n = 2,046), 1,448 (70.8%) people had MASLD without fibrosis and 598 (29.2%) with fibrosis; 161 (11.1%) and 117 (19.6%) respectively also had CKD. After excluding individuals with structural, autoimmune, or malignant CKD (n = 22), liver fibrosis (n = 593; 18.9% with CKD) was associated with increased CKD risk (aRR = 1.31, 1.04–1.64, p = 0.021). Increased mortality risk was observed for those with liver fibrosis (aHR = 2.30, 1.49–3.56, p = &lt;0.001) and was higher again among people with both fibrosis and CKD (aHR = 5.07, 3.07–8.39, p = &lt;0.014).Conclusions: Liver fibrosis was an independent risk factor for CKD in this cohort of people living with MASLD. Furthermore, those with MASLD with liver fibrosis had higher risk for mortality and this risk was further elevated among those with co-morbid CKD. Given the increased risk of CKD, and consequent mortality risk, among people living with MASLD fibrosis, renal function screening should be considered within liver health surveillance programmes and guidelines
