    Raman spectroscopy with ultrashort coherent excitation. Narrowing of spectral lines beyond the dephasing linewidth

    Spectroscopists are constantly faced with the task of improved spectral resolution. Two points are of major interest: (i) The precise frequency of the quantized transition and (ii) the detection of new neighboring transitions. Besides experimental factors the ultimate spectral resolution is determined by the inherent linewidth of the transition. Optical spectroscopists have to deal with different line-broadening processes; for instance with the Doppler effect or with collision broadening in gases, with dephasing processes in condensed systems and with the population relaxation which results in the natural linewidth. In recent years, different novel techniques have been devised which provide spectral resolution beyond the transition linewidth. For instance, Doppler broadening can be eliminated by saturation spectroscopy or by two counter-propagating beams for two-photon transitions/I/. Even measurements beyond the natural linewidth have been performed taking biased signals from the fluorescent decay /2-5/. Techniques have been proposed where the difference between the decay rates of the two states rather than their sum determines the linewidth /6,7/, and narrowing of the natural linewidth by decaying-pulse excitation has been discussed /8/. Very recently, we have demonstrated substantial line narrowing of Raman type transitions in condensed phases /9-11/. The lines were broadened by vibrational dephasing.     High spatial resolution 100 micron observations of the M83 bar

    A program of high spatial resolution far-infrared observations of galaxies using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), was conducted to better understand the role of star formation, the general interstellar radiation field, and non-thermal activity in powering the prodigious far-infrared luminosities seen in spiral and interacting galaxies. Here, researchers present observations of the central region of the well-known barred spiral M83 (NGC 5236). The resultant channel 3 scans for M83 and IRC + 10216, after co-addition and smoothing, are shown. These data show that M83 is extended at 100 microns compared to a point source. A simple Gaussian deconvolution of the M83 data with the point source profile from IRC+10216 gives a full width half maximum (FWHM) of about 19 seconds for M83. By comparison with IRC+10216, researchers obtain a flux for the unresolved component in M83 of about 110 Jy. This is about 1/6 the total flux for M83 (Rice et al. 1988) and about 1/2 the PSC flux. The M83 and IRC+10216 profiles in the cross-scan direction (SE-NW) were also compared, and show that M83 is extended in this direction as well, with a width of about 18 seconds. A comparison of the different channel profiles for M83 and IRC+10216 shows that there is an asymmetry in the M83 data, in that the maximum in the profiles shifts from southeast to northwest as channel number increases. This corresponds to the extension in the bar seen in the CO data. Thus the far-infrared emission in the central region of M83 tends to trace the CO bar. The new 100 micron data is also compared with previous H alpha observations from the literature, to determine how well the far-infrared traces the stellar structure, the star formation as measured by H alpha, and the optical colors

    Treatment of Obesity in Mentally Retarded Persons: The Rehabilitator\u27s Role

    Obesity is a common problem for the mentally retarded and nonretarded populations. Prevalence estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million obese Americans have been reported. The relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and other health related problems is strong. Also, the greater the degree of obesity, the higher the risk of medical problems. In addition to the health problems associated with obesity, the obese mentally retarded person is likely to be the object of increased social prejudice and nonacceptance as a result of being mentally retarded and obese. Fortunately, this solution does not need to be an intractable one. Van Itallie cited studies reporting a positive influence for weight reduction on health. Another treatment goal has been enhanced self-esteem. Given these promising outcomes for weight reduction, the field of obesity has witnessed an explosion of diet programs and exercise regimes to promote weight loss. These programs have varied in their initial success but nearly all have failed to produce long-term maintenance of weight loss. The application of behavioral procedures to the problem of obesity has produced more promising results. This approach has also been successfully extended to the mentally retarded population. This article describes the treatment rationale and procedures for a behavioral self-control package that has been developed for the obese retarded population. Implications of this approach for professionals concerned with rehabilitation efforts for mentally retarded persons will be delineated

    Magnetic fields and flows between 1 AU and 0.3 AU during the primary mission of HELIOS 1

    The recurrent flow and field patterns observed by HELIOS 1, and the relation between these patterns and coronal holes are discussed. Four types of recurrent patterns were observed: a large recurrent stream, a recurrent slow (quiet) flow, a rapidly evolving flow, and a recurrent compound stream. There recurrent streams were not stationary, for although the sources recurred at approximately the same longitudes on successive rotations, the shapes and latitudinal patterns changed from one rotation to the next. A type of magnetic field and plasma structure characterized by a low ion temperature and a high magnetic field intensity is described as well as the structures of stream boundaries between the sun at approximately 0.3 AU

    U.S. Demand for Source–Differentiated Shrimp: A Differential Approach

    Estimates of price and scale elasticities for U.S. consumed shrimp are derived using aggregate shrimp data differentiated by source country. Own-price elasticities for all countries had the expected negative signs, were statistically significant, and inelastic. The scale elasticities for all countries were positive and statistically significant at the 1% level with only the United States and Ecuador having scale elasticities of less than one. For the most part, the compensated demand effects showed that most of the cross-price effects were positive.
