A new doubly discrete analogue of smoke ring flow and the real time simulation of fluid flow

Modelling incompressible ideal fluids as a finite collection of vortex filaments is important in physics (super-fluidity, models for the onset of turbulence) as well as for numerical algorithms used in computer graphics for the real time simulation of smoke. Here we introduce a time-discrete evolution equation for arbitrary closed polygons in 3-space that is a discretisation of the localised induction approximation of filament motion. This discretisation shares with its continuum limit the property that it is a completely integrable system. We apply this polygon evolution to a significant improvement of the numerical algorithms used in Computer Graphics.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Get PDF
The goal of this study was to identify the pattern of distribution in the transfer of federal resources to state-run Research Support Foundations (RSFs), between 2004 and 2012, within the context of the implementation of the national Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) policy. The theoretical framework that guided the analysis of this STI policy was based on work by authors affiliated to the concept of neo-institutionalism. Since this study sought to identify any associations there might be between the variables, the correlation of Kendall-Tau was applied because the data did not meet the requirements of normality. A gap was noted between the pattern of resource transfers during the period analyzed and the long-term goals proposed by the policy, which were aimed at reducing regional inequalities and at promoting Brazil's development.

Uniqueness of stationary states for singular Keller–Segel type models

    Get PDF
We consider a generalised Keller–Segel model with non-linear porous medium type diffusion and non-local attractive power law interaction, focusing on potentials that are more singular than Newtonian interaction. We show uniqueness of stationary states (if they exist) in any dimension both in the diffusion-dominated regime and in the fair-competition regime when attraction and repulsion are in balance. As stationary states are radially symmetric decreasing, the question of uniqueness reduces to the radial setting. Our key result is a sharp generalised Hardy–Littlewood–Sobolev type functional inequality in the radial setting

CVcat: an interactive database on cataclysmic variables

CVcat is a database that contains published data on cataclysmic variables and related objects. Unlike in the existing online sources, the users are allowed to add data to the catalogue. The concept of an ``open catalogue'' approach is reviewed together with the experience from one year of public usage of CVcat. New concepts to be included in the upcoming AstroCat framework and the next CVcat implementation are presented. CVcat can be found at http://www.cvcat.org.Comment: 5 pages A&A Latex, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Non linear flux flow in TiN superconducting thin film

We have studied the superconducting behavior of 100 nm Titanium Nitride (TiN) thin film in a perpendicular magnetic field. We found a zero field transition temperature of 4.6 K and a slope in the H-T plane of -0.745 T/K. At 4.2 K, we have performed careful transport measurements by measuring both the differential resistivity and voltage as a function of a DC current. Our results are analyzed in the framework of linear and non linear flux flow behavior. In particular, we have observed an electronic instability at high vortex velocities and from its dependence with respect to the applied magnetic field, we can exctract the inelastic scattering time and diffusion length of the quasiparticles

Lepidopteran larva consumption of soybean foliage: basis for developing multiple-species economic thresholds for pest management decisions.

BACKGROUND: Defoliation by Anticarsia gemmatalis (H ¨ ubner), Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), Spodoptera eridania (Cramer), S. cosmioides (Walker) and S. frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was evaluated in four soybean genotypes. A multiple-species economic threshold (ET), based upon the species? feeding capacity, is proposed with the aim of improving growers? management decisions on when to initiate control measures for the species complex. RESULTS: Consumption by A. gemmatalis, S. cosmioides or S. eridania on different genotypes was similar. The highest consumption of P. includens was 92.7 cm2 on Codetec 219RR; that of S. frugiperda was 118 cm2 on Codetec 219RR and 115.1 cm2 on MSoy 8787RR. The insect injury equivalent for S. cosmoides, calculated on the basis of insect consumption, was double the standard consumption by A. gemmatalis, and statistically different from the other species tested, which were similar to each other. CONCLUSIONS: As S. cosmioides always defoliated nearly twice the leaf area of the other species, the injury equivalent would be 2 for this lepidopteran species and 1 for the other species. The recommended multiple-species ET to trigger the beginning of insect control would then be 20 insect equivalents per linear metre

Fire resistance performance of concrete-PVC panels with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) stay in place (SIP) formwork

Stay-in-place (SIP) formwork is a more-practical alternative to traditional steel or wood formworks due to its improved constructability and durability. The aim of this paper was to study the fire resistance performances of structural and non-structural concrete panels with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) SIP formwork. Three 124.01 in¿×¿110.24 in¿×¿3.15 in panels of PVC SIP formwork were tested and compared to one another. All panels were aged for 28 days, then exposed to the standard fire curve based on the ISO 834:2014 standard, and the temperatures in each panel surface recorded. The results indicate that concrete strength significantly influenced the structural stability and the fire resistance time of the panels (under load), even in this type of panels when exposed to high temperatures. It was found that the PVC encasement enhanced the thermal insulation property, one of the fire resistance performance criteria. Overall, the importance of this alternative formwork is the reduction in the use of forest resources, the raise of awareness of their conservation, and the promotion of their rational use as this a material is friendly to the environment.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
