    The Late Time Light Curve of SN 1998bw Associated with GRB980425

    We report 139 photometric observations through the B, V, and I filters of the supernova SN 1998bw, an object which is associated with the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 980425. Detailed light curves of this unique supernova can be compared to theoretical models, so we report here our light curve for 123 days between 27 June 1998 and 28 October 1998. The light curve of SN 1988bw is consistent with those of the Type Ic class. We find that the magnitude-versus-time relation for this supernova is linear to within 0.05 mags in all colors over the entire duration of our study. Our measured uniform decline rates are 0.0141±0.00020.0141 \pm 0.0002, 0.0184±0.00030.0184 \pm 0.0003, and 0.0181±0.00030.0181 \pm 0.0003 magnitudes per day in the B, V, and I bands. The linear decline and the rate of that decline suggest that late time light curve is powered by the radioactive decay of cobalt with some leakage of the gamma rays.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, Accepted for publication in PAS

    Flight data obtained from the Space Transportation System orbiter entries are processed and analyzed to assess the accuracy and performance of the Development Flight Instrumentation (DFI) pressure measurement system. Selected pressure measurements are compared with available wind tunnel and computational data and are further used to perform air data analyses using the Shuttle Entry Air Data System (SEADS) computation technique. The results are compared to air data from other sources. These comparisons isolate and demonstrate the effects of the various limitations of the DFI pressure measurement system. The effects of these limitations on orbiter performance analyses are addressed, and instrumentation modifications are recommended to improve the accuracy of similar fight data systems in the future

    The upper Niobrara River drainage basin comprises about 6,600 square miles in northwestern Nebraska and east-central Wyoming. The western half consists chiefly of rolling plains broken on either side of the Niobrara River by canyons of intermittent tributary streams; the eastern half is in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Quaternary are exposed in the area described in this report. The pre-Tertiary rocks crop out only in a small area near Lusk, Wyo., and are not important as a source of water. Most of the area is underlain at considerable depth by the Chadron and Brule formations of Tertiary age, but they are not known to crop out. These rocks are not penetrated by wells because large quantities of water are available from shallower formations. The Arikaree group and Ogallala formation, both\u27 of Tertiary age, consist of fine-grained sand and sandstone, silt, and locally of many layers of limy concretions. These units are the principal aquifers, but they are only moderately permeable; consequently, most wells must penetrate 150 to 200 feet into the zone of saturation to obtain a large yield. Dune sand, alluvium, and terrace deposits of Quaternary age are probably the most permeable sediments, but the zone of saturation in these deposits is not sufficiently thick to yield large quantities of water; therefore, large-discharge wells must be drilled into the underlying Tertiary rocks

    A pp-adic RanSaC algorithm for stereo vision using Hensel lifting

    A pp-adic variation of the Ran(dom) Sa(mple) C(onsensus) method for solving the relative pose problem in stereo vision is developped. From two 2-adically encoded images a random sample of five pairs of corresponding points is taken, and the equations for the essential matrix are solved by lifting solutions modulo 2 to the 2-adic integers. A recently devised pp-adic hierarchical classification algorithm imitating the known LBG quantisation method classifies the solutions for all the samples after having determined the number of clusters using the known intra-inter validity of clusterings.     Stationary axisymmetric perfect fluid space-times are investigated using the curvature description of geometries. Attention is focused on space-times with a vanishing electric part of the Weyl tensor. It is shown that the only incompressible axistationary magnetic perfect fluid is the interior Schwarzschild solution. The existence of a rigidly rotating perfect fluid, generalizing the interior Schwarzschild metric is proven. Theorems are stated on Petrov types and electric/magnetic Weyl tensors.Comment: 12 page

    Existence and topological stability of Fermi points in multilayered graphene

    We study the existence and topological stability of Fermi points in a graphene layer and stacks with many layers. We show that the discrete symmetries (spacetime inversion) stabilize the Fermi points in monolayer, bilayer and multilayer graphene with orthorhombic stacking. The bands near k=0k=0 and ϵ=0\epsilon=0 in multilayers with the Bernal stacking depend on the parity of the number of layers, and Fermi points are unstable when the number of layers is odd. The low energy changes in the electronic structure induced by commensurate perturbations which mix the two Dirac points are also investigated.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures.     Nanotube field of C60 molecules in carbon nanotubes: atomistic versus continuous tube approach

    We calculate the van der Waals energy of a C60 molecule when it is encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube with discrete atomistic structure. orientational degrees of freedom and longitudinal displacements of the molecule are taken into account, and several achiral and chiral carbon nanotubes are considered. A comparison with earlier work where the tube was approximated by a continuous cylindrical distribution of carbon atoms is made. We find that such an approximation is valid for high and intermediate tube radii; for low tube radii, minor chirality effects come into play.
