`Electronic Publishing' -- Practice and Experience
Electronic Publishing -- Origination, Dissemination and Design (EP-odd) is an academic journal which publishes refereed papers in the subject area of electronic publishing. The authors of the present paper are, respectively, editor-in-chief, system software consultant and senior
production manager for the journal. EP-odd's policy is that editors, authors, referees and production staff will work closely together using electronic mail. Authors are also encouraged to originate their
papers using one of the approved text-processing packages together with the appropriate set of macros which enforce the layout style for the journal. This same software will then be used by the
publisher in the production phase. Our experiences with these strategies are presented, and two recently developed suites of software are described: one of these makes the macro sets available over
electronic mail and the other automates the flow of papers through the refereeing process. The decision to produce EP-odd in this way means that the publisher has to adopt production procedures
which differ markedly from those employed for a conventional journal
A Study of Early Syphilis, Its Treatment and the Management of the Reactions to Treatment
Introduction. 1. The objects of the study are given. 2. The material is described and the methods used in case talcing, examination and in laboratory procedures are given in detail. Section I. 1. A clinical study and analysis of the signs and symptoms of primary and secondary syphilis in a series of 250 cases is described and photographs illustrating cases are included. 2. It is concluded that syphilis as studied in this series of cases is a less virulent disease than that described as occurring in the 19th Century. Section II. 1. A study of the reversal of the serological reactions of the blood in relation to treatment, with various schedules of trivalent arsenical compounds and with penicillin, in 979 cases of primary or secondary syphilis is described. 2. It is concluded that:- (a) Neoarsp henamine should be administered regularly, twice weekly, in adequate dosage to obtain satisfactory serological reversal. Satisfactory results in the reversal of the serological reaction of the blood in cases of primary and secondary syphilis can be achieved with mapharside. (c) A total dosage of 2,400,000 Oxford Units of penicillin is not adequate treatment for all cases of primary and secondary syphilis. Further consideration of the optimum dosage and of the "time/dasage" factor in such cases, is required. Section III. 1. A study of the major reactions to the. trivalent arsenical compounds and an investigation into new methods of management of these reactions is described. (a) An injection technique for the prevention of post-arsphenamine jaundice is described, the use of which reduced the incidence of the reaction from 42% to less than 1%. The aetiology of post-arsphenamine jaundice is discussed. (b) Nine cases of erythema of the 9th day are described with their management by a process of desensitisation. (c) One fatal case of haemorrhagic encephalopathy is described and the results of the post-mortem examination are given. (d) One case of agranulocytosis following the administration of neoarsphenamine is described with subsequent arsenotherapy after desensitisation. (e) A typical case of seborrhoeic dermatitis aggravated by the administration of the trivalent arsenical compounds is described with unsuccessful attempts at desensitisation. (f) Seven cases of dermatitis of an allergic type following the administration of neoarsphenamine are described with successful desensitisation using mapharside. (g)Three cases of generalised exfoliative dermatitis following the administration of neoarsphenamine, two of which were treated with B. A. L. , are described. 2. It is concluded that: (a) "Post-arsphenamine jaundice" is usually an infective hepatitis, indistinguishable from epidemic infective hepatitis and its spread amongst patients receiving arseno-therapy can be prevented. (b) Following the administration of the trivalent arsenical drugs, erythema of the 9th day, agranulocytosis and certain types of dermatitis are allergic phenomena and following desensitisation arsenotherapy can be continued. The principles used can probably be applied to the whole group of drugs which cause these reactions. (c) Desensitisation cannot be carried out in seborrhoeic individuals exhibiting dermatitis during treatment with the trivalent arsenical drugs. (d) No definite conclusion concerning the use of B. A. L. in the management of exfoliative dermatitis due to arsenic could be reached

Nonclassical paths in the recurrence spectrum of diamagnetic atoms
Using time-independent scattering matrices, we study how the effects of
nonclassical paths on the recurrence spectra of diamagnetic atoms can be
extracted from purely quantal calculations. This study reveals an intimate
relationship between two types of nonclassical paths: exotic ghost orbits and
diffractive orbits. This relationship proves to be a previously unrecognized
reason for the success of semiclassical theories, like closed-orbit theory, and
permits a comprehensive reformulation of the semiclassical theory that
elucidates its convergence properties.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Forecasting and Granger Modelling with Non-linear Dynamical Dependencies
Traditional linear methods for forecasting multivariate time series are not
able to satisfactorily model the non-linear dependencies that may exist in
non-Gaussian series. We build on the theory of learning vector-valued functions
in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space and develop a method for learning
prediction functions that accommodate such non-linearities. The method not only
learns the predictive function but also the matrix-valued kernel underlying the
function search space directly from the data. Our approach is based on learning
multiple matrix-valued kernels, each of those composed of a set of input
kernels and a set of output kernels learned in the cone of positive
semi-definite matrices. In addition to superior predictive performance in the
presence of strong non-linearities, our method also recovers the hidden dynamic
relationships between the series and thus is a new alternative to existing
graphical Granger techniques.Comment: Accepted for ECML-PKDD 201
Analysis of aggregated tick returns: evidence for anomalous diffusion
In order to investigate the origin of large price fluctuations, we analyze
stock price changes of ten frequently traded NASDAQ stocks in the year 2002.
Though the influence of the trading frequency on the aggregate return in a
certain time interval is important, it cannot alone explain the heavy tailed
distribution of stock price changes. For this reason, we analyze intervals with
a fixed number of trades in order to eliminate the influence of the trading
frequency and investigate the relevance of other factors for the aggregate
return. We show that in tick time the price follows a discrete diffusion
process with a variable step width while the difference between the number of
steps in positive and negative direction in an interval is Gaussian
distributed. The step width is given by the return due to a single trade and is
long-term correlated in tick time. Hence, its mean value can well characterize
an interval of many trades and turns out to be an important determinant for
large aggregate returns. We also present a statistical model reproducing the
cumulative distribution of aggregate returns. For an accurate agreement with
the empirical distribution, we also take into account asymmetries of the step
widths in different directions together with crosscorrelations between these
asymmetries and the mean step width as well as the signs of the steps.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, typos correcte
Measurement Based Resource Allocation for Multimedia Applications
Modern networks are now capable of guaranteeing a consistent Quality of Service (QoS) to multimedia traffic streams. A number of major operating system vendors are also working hard to extend these guarantees into the end-system. In both cases, however, there remains the problem of determining a service rate sufficient to ensure the desired Quality of Service. Source modelling is not a sustainable approach in the network case and it is even less feasible to model the demands of multimedia applications. The ESPRIT Measure project is successfully using online measurement and estimation to perform resource allocation for bursty traffic in ATM networks. In this paper we consider the applicability of the same theory to resource allocation in a multimedia operating system which offers QoS guarantees to its applications
